  1. This coincides well with other insights.... on Why Vista Took So Long · · Score: 1

This coincides well with other insightful articles that show Vista is probably Microsofts last dominant OS. IF things continue the way they have been. The average computer user would have enough know-how to be able to figure out how to install linux. Also, with linux's expanding hardware support. Linux is evolving into a possibly successful mainstream OS. Linux will most likely take over the higher-end portion of the Vista versions such as Vista Premium and Business, etc.

With the amount of bearacracy that is going on in MS. It looks like they are putting money in anything that looks like it can fly and a lot of it is not flying. This is not good in the longterm. MS needs to proiritize and get back to its roots if they want to continue having a high marketshare even if that market share slowly shrinks due to Linux. The best they can do is slow it down.

IF things continue like this, there will finally be a true competitor to MS.

  2. Why Linux will not take over Window's market... on Birmingham Drops Open Source Initiative · · Score: 2, Interesting

Linux is harder to set up, thus it will be more expensive for governments to switch over to linux because it takes more time to set it up. Whereas with Windows, after being in the market for so long and having a lot of people at least be exposed to it once or twice in their lifetime, will not require as much time compared to linux. Therefore it is cheaper to use Windows both in the long term and short term.

Once linux has the same support, features, ease-of-use as Windows has then it has a chance of succeeding and taking a good chunk of market share. But as linux continues to be protrayed as the geekdom of software, it will not be a cheaper solution to Windows.

What Linux needs to do in order to be a viable player in the market is to catch one type of consumer, the PC Illiterate type. These are people who either us MAC OS or Windows XP. All of these people use computers as tools for their job, not as a hobby. You have artists who would use a MAC over Windows, you have accountants who would use Windows because of Excel, etc. Etc. Those who work in the computer field will most likely use any of the platforms out there that their job requires them to do. Anyway, the people who do not work in the computer field just want something that makes their job easier. MS and MAC have set out to do that since the 1980s. MACs always excelled in simplicity and ease of use. In no way does a typical mac user have to learn the inner workins of the OS to fix a problem such as registry edit, etc. The overall learning curve of the MAC OS is little compared to Windows, however, MAC OS is heavily limited to its hardware (well it has been up until now, but even still, you need to be a geek to boot Windows on a mac) and thus not everyone is using it. Reason windows is out there is becuase it tries to do everything. It has evolved a lot to the point where the hardware now has to to support the OS, not the OS support the hardware. Linux is still just that, an OS that has support certain hardware first. That is why you have to be computer literate to be able to get full functionality out of Linux.

I'd recommend the installation of the software because unlike other direct marketing approaches, this one is very much more precise. Now don't worry if EA is going to crack down on you, Kotaku, for having cookies to torrent websites, etc. That data doesn't even get transmitted. And the software is only activated when you are not playing the game and only while surfing the web.

  14. Re:Proof? on What's Wrong With the Games Industry · · Score: 1

Thats true. Some people need someone else to keep them in 'check' and up to date on milestones and deadlines. If you're any studio, you would know that if you missed a milestone then your money is gone and most likely the IP of the game.

Another reason you still need a centralized facility to do the work (office space) is because its the only place you have a controlled development environment. The lead designer/producer cannot check and see if the PC at the employee's home, which they work out of, does not have any trojans, etc that can leak any beta code out. That employee most likely uses the same computer (under the same operating system) for entertainment, such as playing games, even pornography where the chance of malware installing and wreaking havoc to the project is most likely to occur than on a PC in the office where it is hooked up to a WAN, limited access internet (or no internet), plus monitoring software to prevent corporate espionage. Working from home is where any random, devestating, error can occur and severely damage the development of the game.

Some studios have started their business strictly online, but from my experience, they kept missing deadlines because of problems occuring with a specific computer, or something else that's related.

Overall, office space speeds up production and reliability that a project meets milestones and deadline in time.

  17. Re:I'd say yes.. on Will the Wii Work? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I agree. If lets say for each PS3 sold, Sony loses $100 per console, whereas the Wii costs $130 to build but they sell at $250. This number is based on how much it costs to make the GC if they keep on making them the cost of making one is actually around $80, so the Wii costs $50 more to manufacture. Now lets say that Sony sells about.... 10million consoles before its first pricedrop, the same with the Wii console, they sell about... 5million (realistically) before their first pricedrop. And lets say that the time it takes for the prices of the consoles (lets say that they drop the price at the same time) is 2 years.

So, lets put all the numbers together. In two years Nintendo and Sony sell 5 million and 10million consoles, respectively. Nintendo makes a profit of $600million in 2 years. Sony loses $1billion. So, as far as hardware sales go, Nintendo wins. But what also counts are software sales, wehre the real money is made and helps offset that huge lose. Predicting possible software sales figure of each console in 2 years really can't be predicted so we pretty much have to wait and see.

As you can see, from a hardware-only perspective Nintendo succeeds whereas Sony loses. However, both companies also sell software. Nintendo has to make a profit on the hardware in order to compete with Sony and MS, because MS and Sony have the capacity to loose money. If nintendo were to make 25% less sales than Sony in that time (which is in rare for Nintendo if you look at recent sales trends) then their net-profit will match or exceed Sony's net-profit. That is, of course, if the current sales trend continues for Sony.

There is good intentions behind GM foods but then there are companies who really don't know how to handle this type of food and are just in it so that they control most of the market share by the time demand rises.

Funny how some of the organizations against GM foods do not donate to charities that give food to starving countries in Africa, whereas there are many of other 'industrial' food corporations that do.

GM food will ultimately replace natural foods. Which would you choose? Starve or food that provides you with the nutrients you need to stay alive?

The author needs to realize that it is not the companies responsibility to protect you from being harmed by an identity theft.

The company only protects information from the consumer that protects their assets.

If the author really wants privacy then he will have to pay a lot more than what he is currently paying for certain services. A lot of service companies sell certain types of information to other companies for profit so that way their consumer won't have to pay a higher fee.

If people keep wanting to buy things cheaper, have cheaper internet acces, etc. then in order for that company to do that they might sell information about you, like your buying and surfing habits online, etc. to market research teams. THat is how they make up for it all so that you can get a service cheaper than before.

If he wants to protect his privacy then don't sign up for internet service, nor a cellphone. Just get a land-line phone, use snail-mail, shred credit card applications and basically live like a una-bomber. But if he wants cheaper services then he will have to give something up for it.

Q: Why did this take so long?

A: Because people in general can be idiots and can mess around with information posted on wikipedia for a few giggles before someone has to go in and moderate it back to the article's original state. For example, remember the fiasco with Stephen Colbert? That page on elephants had to restricted because people kept on going in and changing it. Before that, there was restrictions on congressmen from editing pages on their opponents (search slashdot) because they were putting in false information about them as well as false accusations.

Although I like the idea of having information free and able to update it instantaneously, however, the vast majority of people are not ready to truly treat wikipedia the way it should be treated.

Before, information was only allowed to a select few but as technology evolved, so did the ability to acquire information as well. And now it really is becoming highly accessible for everyone, however, there are no checks and balances to see if the information that is posted/edited is correct and factual, even if a majority thinks one entry is true but in reality it isn't, this can and will happen and the rest of the world isn't ready for a true wikipedia.

I do have to say though that this venture in Germany will kick off well because Germany has less chance of people, anonymous people, go in and just start messing around.
