why not at least require a literacy standard for voting
Because everyone in the US is affected by US policy, therefore everyone in the US needs to be represented. If illiterates weren't allowed to vote, should they also not be required to pay taxes since they are not represented by lawmakers? Anyway, why stop at illiteracy. Why not require IQ scores of 145+ or high SAT verbals? Or anything that would exclude you from voting. Would you like that?

  19. Re:RFID explained on RFID Explained · · Score: 1
Allow me to explain RFID tags in one easy-to-understand sentence: They are exactly like bar code tags, except they are scanned by electromagnetic sensors, rather than lasers. Boom! That's it. Yes, the paranoia is totally and completely stupid.
Right, but the distinction is between the laser and the electromagnetic sensors. Lasers have to "see" barcodes to scan them, RFID can be detected through layers of clothing, etc from several feet away. The idea of a purse snatcher stopping my wife, asking to see her wallet, and manually scanning each bill to see how much cash she's carrying doesn't scare me quite as much as the idea of the same person walking by wife with a sensor in his wristwatch, passing it by her purse, seeing how much she has, then turning around and clubbing her over the head.

The idea of giant barcodes on the hood of our vehicles being read by each traffic light doesn't scare me as much as the idea of each light picking up the unique ID of our RFID tags hidden on our car. You think those traffic light cameras area PITA, wait until each traffic light times how long it took you to get there from the previous traffic light, determines that you must have been speeding, and automatically sends you a ticket. Have a nice day.

A little paranoia is a healthy thing to have.
  20. On the bright side.. on RIAA To Sue Hundreds Of File Swappers · · Score: 4, Insightful
The RIAA press release gives a nice list of artists who haven't a clue and shall never receive any $$ from me.
The Dixie Chicks, Grammy award winning and two-time Diamond award recipients said, "It may seem innocent enough, but every time you illegally download music a songwriter doesn't get paid. And, every time you swap that music with your friends a new artist doesn't get a chance. Respect the artists you love by not stealing their music. You're in control. Support music, don't steal it."
Wow, and every time I take a dump, a songwriter doesn't get paid, what's your point? Are you saying that if I didn't download that song, the artist would get paid? And how does swapping prevent new artists from "getting a chance?" Sharing is great for truly new artists that can't get mainstream CLEA^H^H^H^H radio play. I assume that by "new artist" you meant the latest "me too" group assembled just for the purpose of sounding exactly like the last chart-topping bile.
