Exactly what kind of "illegal content" is your TiVo going to be playing? Only that which is broadcasted/streamed to your unit from giant media conglomerates. I fail to see how "8:45pm - Channel 725 - 0:13 minutes - volume_down x 3" is going to help convict anyone of anything? Even if you use your TiVo to control your DVD/VCR, how can button clicks associated with your zip code be used for anything?

Ramos said the two cases can't be compared.

"The Betamax was a product that allowed consumers to make copies," he said. "The defendants operate services which facilitate both unauthorized distribution as well as copying, and that continuing network is fundamentally different from the sale of a consumer electronics product, which was the subject of the Betamax case."

Personally, I don't see the difference at all. VCRs are products that allow you both legally and illegally distribute and copy copyrighted information. Ditto for these P2P networks. VCRs are legal. P2P networks are _____? Doesn't seem to hard to me.

This CPU is also among the fastest 32-bit processors out there. It's not like you are "wasting" the 64-bit-ness by not using it. Those extra registers can't be used to feed the homeless or anything. So what? You buy a machine that very fast, and you get the "bonus" of being able to run future (or current) 64-bit OSes on it, one day. Why do you see the glass as half-empty? The list can go on.

The point being, yes, for some a laptop can replace a desktop, but not so for others. Almost all the reasons you gave could be an argument for *both* a desktop and a laptop (with wireless card.)

You can build a heck of a General-Purpose / Gaming / Development machine based on AMD CPUs for next to nothing. You can easily put together an AMD64 3000+ / Radeon 9600 / 19" monitor system for under a grand.

I just take the tower out the back door, open the case and use either a hair dryer or reversible vacuum to blow out the excess dust. (nothing too powerful, just a large stream of directed air.) Takes every bit of five minutes of downtime, then it's back up and running, usually a degree or 2 cooler than before. I think the key is don't let it get to the point where you have to physically scrape the crud off the fan blades with a Qtip or something. Preventative maintenance is best.

"The Gunslinger" is the first book in the "Dark Tower" series. It was written something like 15 years before the second book. I agree that the writing in a bit dull and the book is not entirely entertaining, but it does set the stage for the series. The next books are, to me at least, amazing pieces of literature. Maybe not the best writing ever, but the characters and story-line more than make up for it. Book II is cool, but the 3rd book, "The Wastelands" is by far my favorite in the series. Excellent story with a cliffhanger ending. (The books always seem better if you read the series as they are released. The waiting seem to intensify the experience.) Book 4 wraps up the cliffhanger (nothing too exciting) but then branches off into flashback. I would argue that this book is, by far, the best written of the series, and has a dramatic and epic ministory. It's only disappointing in that it doesn't advance the plot much. It does, however, provide some excellent character development. I just read the latest book, Wolves of Calla. I must admit that it was a bit of a disappointment. The series is getting rather "odd." All his books seem to intertwine with the Dark Tower Universe, sometimes in clever and subtle ways, sometimes in obvious, but this one just blantantly merges characters from previous books into the story. *SPOILER* Near the end, the main character even picks up a copy of "Salem's Lot - by Stephen King." This, after already meeting Father Callahan and hearing his story of vampires. It might be interesting to see where this is going..

Anyway, I'm sure my opinion is rather biased.

Well, the Anandtech review has several charts showing price/performance ratios for different scenarios. In everyone one of them, the Athlon 64 3400+ and P4 2.8C take first and second places. So I would guess that, depending on your budget, either of these will give you the best "speed per dollar." Although, I would like to see some of the Althon XP's compared for reference. I would be willing to bet that the Athlon XP 2600+ 333MHz/512K Barton CPU for ~$95 would rank pretty high on that chart, simply because of its amazingly low price.

Well, if you want the current top of the line 32-bit performance, why not? That's a bit like asking "Should a get this Super Duty Dodge Ram with the best towing capacity available today, but also includes an extra cup holder I might never use." If it has what you need for a reasonable price, why question the extras you might never use. It's not like the 64-bit-ness is truly "wasted" just because you might not use it. Those extra registers can't be used to feed hungry children in Elbonia or anything. They'll just sit there unused.
