Tinfoil would not be enough, creating efficient Rad hardened electronics is an interesting problem. Not only do you have to deal with simple EM types of interference, but the possibility of radiation flipping the bit stored in a register. Typically parallel processors that do redundant checks on data, multipath techniques and other sharing and swarm-consensus types of architectures would be employed. This is the preferred method because strapping a big honking metal plate is MUCH more costly, just to negate rad effects. Although they would still have to shield it against small-debris impacts.

Yea but there has been alot of debate over the degradation of data life on a CD when the adhesive or dyes from the printers and labels are applied to cd's. Perhaps this method would boost data life to the point of non-marked cd's. It probibly wont because that top layer is really fragile, so we might as well stick to our alcohol based marking solutions for now.
The only thing I worry about with scholar, after giving it a whirl, is that some newer papers that have recently been published dont appear, since it seems it builds its index off of citations first. I worry that if Scholar does take hold, newer more obscure papers that may not get the publicity of more mainstream journals and venues of publication will never be seen again (This is all reliant on their indexing model not getting better). Perhaps i'll have to start submiting abstracts of my work to Google as well now...

As someone said before, AOL is aimed at Joe and Jane Sixpack, who are too afraid of what lurks on the wire or to clueless too know any better. And frankly, thoes kinds of users need something like AOL to help them take their baby steps onto the web.
Even better one would be for an intruder to take note of which DNS server your connecting to, then BOOM, quick spoofed scan and you cant get DNS. While your DNS is out and you are trying to get your connectiong working they slip inline on you and 'pretend' to be your DNS, now they can poison you really easily... of course, muggiling with the routing tables of a up stream switch and whatnot to pass themselves off as a DNS server, or hijacking the upstream DNS isnt always the easiest, but it would be a dirty way to slip into a large corp's systems if the security was set like such...
But what about this article? And isnt sound just a pressure wave? Cant such waves propigate in space? Yes its a vaccume, but RF propigates too, I dont see how sound couldnt propigate as well. Although, your head might explode should you try to listen to sounds in space with just your ear alone!;o)

NASA does astronomy. To be very blunt and honest, astronomy provides very few concrete short-term benefits.
Really? Astronomy? Well, they do some of that, but every look at NASA Langley. They do aerospace research, have aided Boeing in desinging almost every aircraft they built. Langley has produced some of the finest Structures and Materials research. And has many unique test facilities and wind tunnels that nobody else has.
Or what about NASA Glenn? They do space research, but their studies into new and unique propulsion systems dont look like astronomy to me.
NASA is a low-frills research organization. They get poor public support, and even more limited congresional support, yet they produce some amazing stuff. The problem that I see is, the public thinks exactly like your first sentance, they dont view NASA as an incubator for new expensive tech that can mature and develop well only in a gov funded (ie no worries about profit) situations. If you dont belive me on that point, go look at the papers on Optics, Radar, Ultrasonics, look at aircraft structures, etc, somewhere in there is a NASA engineer who developed, or help develop core features that are curtial today.
If there was no AMD as we know it, Intel may have not ever been pushed enough to get to the 3.06 GHz by this point in time. Although its likely there would be another competitor, that they would have inspired Intel to get into the clock war like it has with AMD is anyones guess. I think just AMD being a good competitor has improved not only AMD's chips, but also the quality of the Intel chips.
