    The Windows NT (aka 2k/xp) line always ran smoother compared to the 95/98 line.

    NT also required more memory.

    This is the 32 bit NT code vs 16/32 bit mix of 9x. You could get 9x to run in less memory and it would be fast in some areas and slower in others. On the other hand, if you had enough RAM NT would run more concurrent tasks without nearly as much of a slowdown compared to 9x on the same system.

    One, the system I own. I don't care about the others. I have no need to, this is not a hobby, this is my computer.

    It works with everything I have.

    Without editing files and getting complicated? 95/98/Me/2000/XP/NT 4

    does windows or dos support more different hardware than linux? (I have one pentium3 sitting right here that crashes on the HLT instruction. I can only run Linux on it, and quite well.)

    Your hardware is broken, you should fix it.

    Any Joe Programmer can hack together a device driver that can crash your system.

    Only use WHQL certified drivers and you won't see STOP crashes.

    I honestly don't see why firmware upgrades should leave devices as bricks - at the very least, a non-overridable "boot rom" (which normally hands over to the firmware, but can instead run a rescue program in the event of mishap)

    Supermicro motherboards had something like this for years. If your BIOS is corrupt you put in a floppy with a new image and hold down some special key combo to activate the emergency flash feature.

    Only had to use it once, on a test system, saved me the time of having to find another mb.

    Verizon will find some way to cripple that phone and still get me to sign a two year contract.

    They're good like that.

    Verizon has, by far, the best network in my area. Also, the rates are not too bad. Problem is, they tend to turn off some of the nicer features of the phones.

    My phone has GPS and Bluetooth, VZW turned them both off for some reason. Not sure why. Also turned off the WAV ringers, I guess they like MIDI better.

    A few strange ones on trains.

    1. Crossing the rockies on the Empire Builder. Barely got a cell signal, but it worked.
    2. Crossing the desert on the SouthWest Chief.

    Both in a nice private room with an outlet and a poorly aging Dell Inspiron 7000.

    Also Mt. Rushmore and later Devil's Tower. Was using the GPS for trip navigation, had the cell plugged in too, so, figured I would see what's new...

    All at 9600 bps. Fun.

    I run a few dozen domains. One of them is actually on it's way out, so no valid email addresses anymore, it only had about 5 to begin with anyway.

    I started using the catchall as a spam trainer about 3 months ago, the results have been great!

    Not only are my spam filters trained, but I have a ban list of IP addresses that filter down to our other domains. (5 spams from same server in an hour, tarpit for an hour or two, 5 more, full ban for a day).

    My only worry is that I might overload the spam filtering system, it's collecting a ton of data.

    I'm guessing that will happen eventually.

    It's interesting how long it's taking though. I wonder what is causing one group to leapfrog another. Is the English speaking community too loose-knit? Or is it that they have so many choices they don't see Orkut as an important site.

    Granted, I don't have an account. And I'm guessing no one on Slashdot has one or they would have developed some automated signup system by now. (Which, strangely enough, would bring about another language war, Perl or PHP?)

    Either way, in the end the Orkut system will become native multilanguage capable and this argument will become a thing of the past.

    So, I expect something like this:

    '*BSD is dying scores a high ranking, while GNAA and GOATSE only got a 3. And the text art caused finder to explode.'

    It's claim to fame is the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, bunch of old houses and people who dress up in 1800's garb.

    Well, at least it was when I was a kid. For all I know, it might be the tech center of Long Island now.

    Actually, I had to go searching for the first EULA. There were no obvious links to it on the site.

    I had to take the time to go to the FTP server and look for it. However, the no-refund policy was located in several obvious locations.

    I'm guessing the first time you will see the EULA is after you open the box, and according to them, have given away your right to return the software.

    Book prices have gone thru the roof in the past 10 years.

    Combine that with more Internet use and a 500 channel cable TV system (with a DVR, of course) and it's no wonder I hardly read anymore.

    Drop softcover prices down to a sane $4 and hardcover to $12 and we'll see an increase in reading again.

    This is opposed to not updating and having granddad sitting there with a hacked system.

    I would rather have to visit to fix a UI problem then have to explain why granddad's system was hosting a spam relay.

    Only critical updates can be set to automatic.

    Video drivers are not considered critical.(Well, if you play EverQuest they might be, but that's another story)

    You are right and wrong.

    If the bank supports the older format, yes it goes by the date. However, in 1998 a new format was created that eliminates the duplicate record problem. Not all banks use the newer format.

    In the latest versions of windows:

    Click Start.
    Click Set Program Access and Defaults
    Turn off IE.

    You shouldn't see Internet Explorer after that. However, the HTML control that IE hosts will remain resident, since it is part of the OS and can not be easily removed.

    (Actually, you can remove the control, but it breaks anything that uses HTML, like windows explorer)

    Simple, set your anti-spam filtering software to favor SPF publishers.
