The problem is that there is a problem.

Look what happened in the last election and what it meant. And after that you would have had 4-3.5 years to fix it. And you still show up on the news as having problems on day 1.

There is zero reason for not being able to connect to a database, not when you've had this much time to prepare for it.

This is in a Games section of slashdot, not in IT, not in "cool engines".

Thats nice that they look at it as an engine, so why didn't they sell it as one?

Thats nice that they make alot of money, but we are talking about the quality of Doom 3, the game. Does the fact that they made $X suddenly make the game enjoyable for more people?

To get to the point where you can write something that is well thought out, compelling and interesting to others, you need to write something half-assed, boring and uninteresting to others so that you can learn and grow. By not writing, you can't find out and learn.

Thats why your first quote of "if you can't do something right then don't do it at all" doesn't apply here. (I'm not even sure where it would apply)

Its very rare where someone trys something (writing, drawing, singing, programming, rocketry, etc) for the very first time and there is no room for improvment.

They can't be saving just on development costs, in the long run, they will be dependent on random strangers to fix things, its pretty easy to outsource to cheaper places, you still need developers to fix things IF its not already and then you give the fix away for free (including developer time which you can charge back).
