I'm quite sure that SONY will be using a better version of the Mini Disc Format, that would be a better format, and plus it could add some life to the format anyway, because i love me some minidisc!
is that most of the/. community doesn't like Hip Hop and therefore thinks that it's bad immediately, notwithstanding Eminem though, he's ok! For reasons, that would take too long to explain, but nonetheless, I believe that's why a lot of/.'ers use the argument that 90% of the music on the radio is crap ecause, "unforunately" Hip Hop is in every music genre now. Look at the sucess of Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, Rehab, etc.. why? because the sound is "fresh" (albeit stolen), and it's a little too hip hoppy for the guys who like.. umm, Phish... And if you really want to know about music, check out every American music genre, look who innovated and created everyone of them, and see when they became popular, and for what reason they became popular with the "mainstream"... that's it.. and sampling is good, because there's a lot of crap out there that could use a good home on someone elses tracks.
He would have been a million times better as Neo than Keanu, although i don't have a problem with Keanu too much, but I would have expected someone with more.... expression, like B.Z. to play the role, and it would have helped out his career.
It's pretty hard getting a computer club up and running, I tried that in my High School, but most of the hardcore computer users graduated my freshman year, Soooooo, It was me and me that would have been the club, and some other people that had some psuedo-knowledge. The only person that seemed interested was the librarian, and she was cool, and she also let me install linux on one of the machines (this was around the year 2k, and i was a senior then), but then some stupid kid pushed the machine over, and it fell on it's back, there fore ruining all of my work. And through all of that, it wasn't worth it.. I just did my fun social computer stuff outside of school.
With college its even worse, because at my school, you have to, apply, get money (once a semester), then use it, or you lose it. And since I goto the school that won the NCAA b-ball championships... Being a computer geek doesn't help either, heck, I have a hard enough time getting my friends to play anything other than a sports game! Trying to get my fellow comp. sci people to use anything but windows is a problem too. Sooo unless you have a large group already, no matter where you go, that's gonna be a struggle.
Everyone says the same thing... "I don't want to buy a CD with one (maybe two) good songs on it"... I'm just dissapointed that MTV and the RIAA controlled radio has limited people to think that any new, upcoming artist can produce only a maximum of 2 good songs... Sooooo, that means that yes... 2 dollars for two good songs is great, but I would honestly like to see people be a little more objective of modern music, rather than being subjective, for that's one of the big reasons that the RIAA got themselves in a rut now. Well, on a side note, MTV2 does play whole albums on the station for people to review, which i think is fantastic, so they can hear more than the two singles an artist(s) releases.
one of my former roommates had one of these things, and I must say that he's quite an excellent programmer, and with a little work he got Quake and Descent running on it at about 5-10 fps. I'm sure that more complicated emulation is quite possible for that little machine. I always wanted one myself, but I was not that good at porting, nor programming like my ol' roomie:)
There needs to be *major* innovation with X11 server. i really think that having a fork would give either side a push to make sure that each next release would be that much better. I honestly think that X11 needs to be replaced anyway by something new, with standards built in. Being free to do whatever you want is great, but you can also allow a lot of bad practices to become the "cream" of the crop pretty easy.
I personally am feeling guilty for having to download tracks from some artists. when I download something I'll listen to it, and keep it if I *really* like it, and plan to purchase the album later (I really do, I'm now buying a CD a week now, maybe two a week), so with the mp3's i have, I delete them one by one as I purchase the CD. So I have a record of what albums to purchase. I don't buy it when people say that they will buy the album later, 98% of my friends/others/relatives say that they buy more CD's because of mp3's. No! They just buy bigger HD's. Well, I'm done for now, but if CD's do cost too much for you, get them used. You'll save a lot of money and have a legal copy.
Now, about me copying my CD's to MD, that's another touchy subject!
I personally love MiniDisc, and I must say that if they plan do use the lower bitrate for ATRAC3, I dunno.. Because it's not that great. Anything higher is great, just the lower end of the spectrum can't hold up at all. Now, for piracy, I don't know what to say about that, but remember that if you assume that a cd comes with 80% crap, you'll think that it's 80% crap.
I LOVED working there, despite the fact I knew previously about their business practices, they were the only company to accept me for an internship that summer (Apple, IBM, and a whole bunch of other companies said "no" and I don't know why). Well, as said before they treat you really well, and it's one of the best college experiences I had in a long time, now I just need to get a job with them! Although, now I have the urge to work for Apple for the summer, and I seriously think that working for them would damage my chances of working for any of the other, "rival" companies.
Too bad Sony never let too many people get ahold of Minidisc technology. I could really see that as a floppy killer due to it's storage for the price, durability and the fact that it's just so much cooler than a floppy or cd will be due to the cases and such. I would LOVE to have a minidisc drive on my computer.
I knew they would do this. I was considering many times to by the matrix, but knew that once reloaded was near they would try to get as much money as they can out of it. I would wait until they release them all together as one big set, but I'm not that frugal.
I used to play SF a lot in middle and high school. Back on the military base in Germany, we didn't have a large gathering of hardcore players, but the group we had (10-15) was big enough to know who was good and not. I used to skip my lunch and go straight to the arcade with my other SF people and challenge the high schoolers, it was fun, despite getting threatned every 3rd game by someone much bigger than me for about 45 minutes straight. I would last long enough until lunch would end or someone from my crew came up against me. Ahhh, the good ol' days, I guess thats why I got SF collection for the Sega Saturn, and I hope I can get a NEO-GEO this summer!
I'm sure that XP and NT and 2k are really secure, but everyone and their mom wants to find a bug in the software, trying to make it look bad. I'm sure if everyone worked toward making worms and virii for kmail, it would be considered the worst mail client....EVER. So just look at who the script kiddies are targeting.
Didn't they try to kill the CD or something with a smaller form of DAT or something similar to that. I just remember seeing regular sized audio tapes with digital information on them (which really doesn't seem like a bad idea for data storage actually)
At a big upstate NY school, we have had massive problems with that. It was mainly Morpheus and Kazaa, and I used to work for the computing consultants and I would get a LOT of calls in about how little bandwith kids in the dorms were getting. I personally in my dorm couldn't even check slashdot because it was so bad, and our school has numerous OC3's too! It was a painful experience, but the school just send out mass emails about how to turn off file sharing in Morpheus and it made it a WHOLE lot better. I myself have been a bandwidth hog (using over 2 gig's a day, but rarely) but no, these kids are even worse with their MP3's. And it's even harder to tell my roommates to not do that stuff because it hurts everyone else. And yes, We have major companies down our throats... All the time.

Good luck though!
