Quicktime isn't exactly the best performing multimedia app going on Windows. Its a bit slow and files that play perfectly on low end Macs can play like crap on fairly high-end PC's.
We're only talking about simple audio files here. QuickTime can easily handle audio--no problem. It doesn't start choking until you start feeding it high data-rate video.
ST is therefore pursuing alternative approaches in which the aim is to produce solar cells that may have lower efficiencies (e.g. 10% instead of 15-20%) but are much cheaper to manufacture.
In a a previous/. article regarding solar power, someone did a little calculation and concluded that you'd need a big house to hold enough solar cells for 2kW annual power consumption. This company believes their reasearch will yield solar cells that will be cheaper to produce, and less efficient in use than today's solar cells.
So... your 3.3kW/year estimate is over 50% larger and your solar cells are about 50% less efficient than the assumptions used in the previous calculation. I believe you'll nead a really big house to hold all of those solar cells.
This Do-Not-Call list is a great idea. Now I'm wondering... when will they implement a Do-Not-Mail list? Not only am I sick of telemarketers calling my house, but I'm sick of junk-mail marketers filling my mailbox with garbage. I have always wondered how many legit, important pieces of mail are tossed out with the junk.
That's why it's a Constitutional Republic and not a Democracy. Don't they teach anything in schools anymore?
Yes they do.
According to Merriam-Webster: democracy:
a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.
I'm sick of people whining "We live in a republic, not a democracy." Our government is a mixture of both dammit. If we lived in a pure democracy, then we wouldn't have a federal congress or state & local assemblies representing us; we would all cast individual votes on all issues. If we lived in a pure republic, we would never vote directly for any measures or propositions; our elected representatives would do all the voting for us.
It's also called 'Starving Artist': students come up with an idea for a record album, cover art, and lyrics only to be told by teachers that they owe the record company lots of money even though they sold many thousands of CDs to fans.
I nominate "who gives a shit?"... They're just devices, a means to an end.... Its irrelevant.
You seem to have lost your way and stumbled across an entire community of people who give a flying fuck.
This is Slashdot: News for Nerds. Stuff that matters.
I guess there will only be one computer, at this time : a virtual computer distributed over millions of physical nodes, so the storage will might be each of these nodes' memory... Like Freenet but also aimed at distributing workload.
Sometimes, the continued reporting of how our rights as consumers are being eroded makes me want to put slashdot in my barred hosts file. And then move to a cave.
That would be a cave with a broadband connection, right? I mean... for a second there, I thought you were going a little too far.
The thing about bending fibre optics that nobody ever points out, is that if you bend even an infinitely-elastic fibre optic through too tight a curve, then you will get light leakage.
This is true, however, the real benefit of a super-elastic fiber cable is not that you can install it in knots, but that you don't have to be so damned careful in handling it. You could be rough with it while trying to route it through your walls, but when it comes time to fire it up, you may have to go and loosen up the tight turns.
So PAYING attention to the game and being creafull is CHEATING.
Counting cards is not cheating. It is a technique for playing well. If you play too well, then a casino will simply ask you to stop playing. It's their table--their right.
As for the other players... your blackjack game is independent of the others' games. You win money from the dealer, not from other players. Some might claim that your game affects others because of the cards you do or do not take. This is true, but it does not make their games any better or worse. The cards they are delt are just as random whether or not you decide to take one from the dealer or let the next guy take it.
Yes, having advertising affecting search results is not good for the end user but (and I'm just bringing this up as a discussion topic), in what other ways can a search engine make money?
So... does this "blanket lawsuit" protection apply across the board? Or does it only apply to lawsuits having to do with "failure during a terrorist attack"?
On my PowerBook, I have the Function key bound such that when it's held down, the trackpad becomes a giant 2D scroller. On my desktop system, I have it configured so that pressing Control-Option-Command turns the mouse into a giant 2D scroller. I find both of these very useful, very often.
I would be interested to know what percentage of those jail sentences are for the so-called "crime" of drug possesion.

The untenable downside here is that it's one large step in the wrong direction for the public acceptance of DRM.

Be careful now! While you're listing to 8x speed lectures, those predetors could be sneaking up on you! :)
Have you already forgotten what the article said? Our memories have been imporoved!

If you just ignore all the marketing bull coming from these companies, than yes, they are just making hardware and making games.
Go check out the auction again. It has been removed.
but the brits are playing it down here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3200019.stm
Hmmmmmm now where did I put that Anderson shelter?

I, for one, welcome our new worm overlords.

Uhh... how about having advertising that does not affect search results. You see... ads on google are relevant to your search criteria, yet are separate from the results.
You see folks, this is the great thing about Slashdot articles. There are so many dups to choose from!
Unless, of course, you were referring to "The show must go on." :)
