What constantly worries me when I read about OEM's deploying nonstandard (i.e. non-microsoft) products on their desktops are the headaches that will come with tech support. I sure as shit know that if a granny calls with a new Lindows computer running Linux then she's SOL for tech support.
Yes, rip-offs will always arise (DOOM clones, etc) but the difference here is that the Simpson's games are popular and, thus, make a great target for lawsuits which are actually just an excuse to setttle out of court...
Why exactly would an 11 year old need a website?? There are too many useless sites out there proclaiming 'I can built a website, I'm so cool!! Look at this picture of my hideous rat-dog!!!11!! k-thx-bye!!'
My site also has pictures of my cat, thank-you-very-much!
Look, if you buy alpha-grade software from ANYWHERE and it starts to crash or behave oddly then you don't get a chance to complain to somebody.
When I played through Half-Life 2 a while back and monsters didn't render I didn't post my disgust to any online forums; I just realised that I was playing an unreleased, buggy version of the software and should be glad for what I saw at all.
We've already started a collection for the kids over at the Quakecon Forums. After just a few hours I've had $20 sent in and on December 5th I'm going to collect up everything donated and buy a shitload of stuff from the wishlist and send it off to Gabe and Tycho. The specific thread has more details and if you'd also like to be a part of our massive money collection then feel free to donate over at the official donation site. Not only will you get your name on the big donation but you can get a nice warm feeling during Thanksgiving!
automatically mirror (and provide as separate link) a front-page snapshot of featured stories for the first hour of a story going public
This is about to start getting to be a problem eve nfor subscribers. Now it seems like even when we get our stories a little earlier than the rest of the readers there are more an more people hitting the sites during that initial 'trickle' before the flood.
How about cached links for subscribers only? Take the links and cache them from the minute the story hits the page for subs and then for 15 minutes after the story hits the front page. That way we still get a little bit better speeds during the initial crunch and it'll make a great plum to encourage subbing (which is a great service, about to renew in a day or two)
You don't have to keep paying just to be able to use it. Jaguar works great today just like it did the day before Panther came out. If you don't want to pay for an upgrade that improves the performance of your OS in remarkable ways then more power to you; Jag will keep working!
Scene: Home at home after becoming union president
(Knock at the door) Homer: Hello? Who is it? Outside the door: Hired Goons. Homer: Goons? Outside: Hired Goons. Homer: Well, ok.... (opens door, pulled outside and to Mr. Burns mansion.
Burns: Welcome Homer. Homer: You could have just called me and I would have come. Burns: Yes, but I prefer the hands-on approach of hired goons.
Apple has implemented some basic desktop composition features in Mac OS X "Panther."
Apparently he's never seen Expose...
But the basic problem with Mac OS X isn't going away: It's a classic desktop operating system that doesn't offer anything in the way of usability advancements over previous desktop operating systems. Today, Windows XP and its task-based interface are far superior to anything in Mac OS X.
Statement without proof. Opinion. Move along.
In the future, Longhorn will further distance Windows from OS X.
True, it will be much more bloated, include DRM, have graphical overhead not designed for computers it will run on, use up more of the screen real-estate with 'sidebars,' dumb things down so that grandma can do it but i have to step through 10 steps to fucking print, and overall make the task of using your computer all the more unrefined.
From a graphical standpoint, there won't be any comparison.
Apparently Paul's never even fucking SEEN Mac OS X and all of its iterations. Literally the most beautiful OS evar!
As Microsoft revealed at the PDC 2003 conference, Longhorn is far more impressive technically than Panther.
True, it is amazing how so many monkeys can make Windows occasionally work through their collaborative C# coding...ok, so I took the bait!
But what about when the RIAA comes knocking? Then you'd be happy to have your 20 Gigs of KaZaa'd music encrypted before you throw the PowerBook out the window!
As they come through the door just yell "Suck on that! Encrypted and all I had to do was take a 35% performance hit in everything I do!"
Did you even live through the dot-com bubble? Do you remember when sites like Yahoo!, Excite!, and the other titans of ad-based revenues (or lack thereov) were huge for a while and had hundreds of other companies trying to do the exact same thing fully well knowing that revenues would be slim to none? And after a few years the only services left were the ones that made a real name for themselves, brokered real, money-making partnerships, or that sold their soul to the devil?
That's exactly what I see going on here: We've got iTunes, MusicMatch, Napster, Wal-Mart, MTV, and the others on the horizon that are all going to enter into a market that their accountants probably would advise against but they still do it to try to get a foothold in a new and emerging market. Expect many of them to die off unless they get a viable business model to back up their technical requirements. Apple's got the iPod, Napster has their $9.99 subscription service, and the others have....
It'll be interesting to see the Internet music bubble burst in a year or two. In the meantime I'll keep buying music from iTunes.
According to a unet link posted earlier in this thread the router gets a request from 'filter.belkin.com' that will enable/disable the 'feature'. So apparently there's a call that you can make over HTTP that will manipulate the router w/out a login. Now that's secure!
In response criticism, a Belkin product manager came forward this week to confirm the behaviour was designed into the products as a way to make it easier for consumers to sign up to a free trial of its parental control software.
Also in the news: the American council for airbags has been hitting people randomly in the streets to make it easier to appreciate their products. Thanks!
Seriously, though, I don't 'get' how a company could think this would endear themselves to their customers. If Cisco pulled this shit on its customers and made all their routers randomly direct to their brand-new VPN product I think it'd make people stop using Cisco FAST
Trust me, once you go Dual-Head, you won't go back.
I soooo wish that I'd get 'dual head' in my NOC...
Well, at least it's not illegal or dying...
who in their right mind merges the public internet server and internal intranet server ???
who in their right mind sues IBM???

Sidetalkin!
My favorite bad product assumption is right in its title:
Microsoft Works

Gotta love the irony of reading the parent while letting a deadline slip at work...

C'mon now, /.'s not perfect. After all, just wait 3 days and we'll see Taco post this story again with different wording :p
I'm all for it. If it makes /. load faster when I hit CTRL-R 10 times per half hour then I'd be very happy!
On second thought, that could mean more time working. Scratch the idea.

Hang on, I was planning to do this just after I'm done compiling a list of Windows security flaws

After their wild success with the greatest hand-held game platform (I speak, of course, of the N-Gage) there's NOTHING that Nokia can't do!
oops, forgot the sarcasm tags

If you have an iPod and had the choice of MusicMatch or iTunes what would you choose?
MusicMatch:
1) WMA-Crippled Music Downloads
2) Pay more for more features
3) Shit-poor interface
iTunes
1) AAC-crippled Music Downloads that play on the iPod
2) Full features (ripping, smart playlists, etc) for free
3) Great interface
Sorry, no competition here. Move along.
