Well, yes it would still be in google's search results if the GoogleBot hasn't crawled the whitehouse site since the change was made.
Next time it crawls the site it won't read the forbidden directories and will delete them (if present) from the Google Cache, essentially erasing any official iraq history from google (and other search engines)
Gator claims that their software isn't spyware because people are told about what they are installing. Yes, they are told that they are installing Gator but that's it. I'm pretty sure that even my grandmother would click NO to installing a "persistent, targeted advertising and consumer tracking system" onto her computer.
So while technically they are correct they should also realise that they are sleazebags who sleep with SCO. There. That should piss them off.
Everybody around my office really appreciated Microsoft distributing that last round of patches via email. That really made it a lot easier for us to keep our systems runni
I think it's a "just in case" type of thing. It never really hurts to reboot unless you're one of the uptime nazis that troll around here occasionally, late into the night...
It's not the full version of their software that's free, just the Personal Learning Esition of the software that they've been giving away since Feb. of 2002
Watch him get booted out of every job in the future! Watch him use MS Outlook without patching! Watch him lose his company millions for leaving ports open! Watch him get grilled into little chunks by the HL2 community!
Apple has, in the last 3 years, released 4 versions of OS X. Each version gets much more feature rich, faster, and far more impressive. In the time before Longhorn comes out we're going to see some pretty incredible things from Apple coming out into the public for real.
WinSuperSite and the other(?) win advocacy sites may get a hard-on for the next 3 years for the "Luna" interface or whatever it's called. They may drop their jaws at the useless sidebar that'll decrease screen real estate even more. They may also tell you that WinFS is going to blow away anything out there for file systems.
And all at the same time that they're talking about what's coming the rest of us will either have a damn good OS with Apple that's constantly being improved and updated or we're going to be stuck with WinXP and the weekly security blitzkrieg that happens to every Windows-centric IT department in the world.
Migration to Apple/Linux etc. would be a low process that has to be done in phases. For example: taking all of your Windows servers and moving them over to Mac OS X Server on some XServes. Get everything running smoothly and just like it was before with winNT or whatever.
When it comes time to do a desktop upgrade and the higher-ups are evaluating their options suggest Apple. When they argue that the prices are outta the roof then rebut that by pointing out that the entire backend was migrated to X for lower TCO , higher uptime, and better prefomance.
Until we make the bean counters realize that Apple/Linux/et. al. are actually good systems that will free the company from MS BS then nothing will get done. Less green going into servers means more green possibly going over to new OS X desktops.
Also of note is that Apple announced Panther server (I'm sure that means we'll be seeing uber-optimized X-Serves in the near future). One of the most fucking amazing features of P.Server is that it can function as your Windows PDC for all those poor XP boxes out there.
Now this could be like Apple previously said "Jag can auth to Active Directory" and basically make it impossible by not telling anybody how to do it but if P.Server really can act as a PDC then the X-Serves loaded with an unlimited license of P.Server are a fucking great deal!
Oh, and if anybody lives in the DFW area then look for me at the Knox Street release party on the 24th. I'm the goofy redhead:)
Actually, Apple Mail.app will basically do this for you: When it has a problem sending through a server it'll popup a box with a list of SMTP servers and allow you to select one from the list.
It's a lot nicer than having to type it in everytime but I still wish that it could be tied into the best feature of OS X: Location Manager
yar! NO SHIT! I hate hearing about all this crap too! In fact, I hate reading about Apache, BSD, and Apple! Why the hell can't/. just cover generic geek stuff! It's not like I can disable or not ever see stuff from particular topics!
The GOP announced that it's adopting a 100% Microsoft platform for all of its future projects. A senior official was quoted as saying "Free? Nothing that's good is free! After all, Ballmer said that WinXP is the most secure Windows OS ever!"
meh, i'm switching to SCO because of this. I can't take a company that hates its users as much as Apple does!
What the hell is a 45rpm single? Is that some type of CD/MP3?
Did iPods play those? Is that some new hip-hop artist?
ok, ok, we get it. It's about CD singles, not albums.
But the more interesting thing would be to see how many singles were downloaded off KaZaa alone in the same period.
I had circular dependency issues before.
Well then don't fucking cough in my direction, thank you very much!
If we don't stop these constant barrages from the Sun then the terrorists will win!

Oh, and P.S.: Gator is Spyware. Ha!
Lemme guess....Microsoft?

Choose where you want to be.

So we sue now for using the shift key?
So we sue now for not installing software?
So we sue now for using wifi?
So we now enter bizarro-world!

I learned all my business skills from /.!
....
for example:
1. Step 1
2.
3. Profit!!!
yar! NO SHIT! I hate hearing about all this crap too! In fact, I hate reading about Apache, BSD, and Apple! Why the hell can't /. just cover generic geek stuff! It's not like I can disable or not ever see stuff from particular topics!
Why do I see something on the horizon in the vein of Prof. Farnsworth's F-Ray that was used to detect the winning Slurm can on Futurama?
Will it give people cancer/make them sterile too?

ok, so it's flamebait...just laugh and move on
If you 'fear' Apple then you've got a lot more problems than just finding an Ogg-enabled music player....
