Since when did Microsoft care whether something was flawed or not?
Unless by "flawed" they mean that if they were to actually implement an open and recognised standard it could threaten their business model of lock-in.
Microsoft seem to be abusing their position in the industry market place so flagrantly is amazes me how they continue to do so without anything being done about it.
The only thing flawed here is the system... Why is it that there is no-one with enough might to prevent big corporations from assuming so much power and control?
I was thinking exactly the same thing - Unfortunately I dont have an answer - but im also thinking that this is the kind of thing cell could do exceptionally well.
Thats bollocks! PearPC - While able to run OSX - it is simply an emulation of PPC hardware. There are plenty of operating systems that PearPC can run eg: linux, bsd , beos etc. It is upto the person running the emulator whether they violate apples licensing agreement.
Cherry OS however - albeit the same thing as PearPC are explicitly advertising their (stolen) product for the purpose of running OSX. They are much more likely to find themselves on the end of an apple lawsuit than the PearPC developers.
What do they mean by "Booting" ? Does this mean I could have a PC running Linux (having no Windows Installed as I do now) yet buy one of these Innovative discs and run from a cold start directly off CD?
It would be awesome if this happens because it would make PC games much more Operating System agnostic. I dont run any windows boxes/ partitions at all - but id sure like to have a bit more of the Gaming pie!
Once again a riduculous patent that has slipped through the net. It's a bit broader than iTunes and iPods - in fact any service that uses the method of using a credit card details as a valid method of identification is encompassed. This includes all sorts of things like online shop's , porn sites and so forth.
If you are a web developer and are asked by your PHB or a client to develop a website that uses this kind of login/validation remember to point out that it is patented and license fees should be paid. Developers can play a role in pointing out the problems with the system.
I think the whole patent fiasco is abhorrent. As much as we "knock" companies like pat-rights the more they continue to expose the farcical system the more likely it will loose its validity and hence be fixed.
While it is true that there are various piracy issues to be worked out, Eh?
Im sure thats true for proprietary products such as windows but why is this a problem for Debian which is freely available and downloadable both in source and binary forms from a variety of places?
The confirmation that a large body of frozen water exists on Mars is excellent news for any future manned missions to the planet. Its presence means that Human beings could sustain themselves for much longer periods of time without the need to transport gallons of water for use when they get there. With the addition of green houses it is even possible that water might be of vital use in growing food for consumption on the surface of Mars.
I have not used the Google toolbar - I use Firefox under linux - however I have RTFA and what is described to me sounds rather dirty play on googles part. The action of modifying web pages containing addresses or ISBN to drive click through traffic seems pretty low to me. While im not sure what to make of the patent infringements allegations (inserting smart tags into html at development time is rather different from using search technology to do this on the fly - although the result may be the same) Im not keen on google using theses kinds of pratices it blackens their reputation and seems more like the kind of stunt Microsoft would pull. Google need to be extra vigilent now that Redmond have stepped up the fight. My advice to google would be to keep their face clean. Its not just surfers that are going to be miffed with this but developers and their customers too.
Does anyone know what those sound elimination mats are made from? could one use an alternative material with similar properties that can be found in any diy/houshold store?
Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, director of the Autism Research Centre (ARC) at Cambridge University, is interested in what Mänti might teach us about savant ability.
Anyone know if this guy is a relation to Ali-G ? (Sacha Baron-Cohen) who also went to cambridge.
Near native to what ? To the clock rate of which processor? the physical one or the virtual one? I mean - Im sure you can emulate a Z80 at "Near Native" speeds without batting an eyelid but what if the Z80 in question was running at 20ghz ? For example - having used VMWare in the past I have found that the performance of the virtual machine to be roughly half the speed of the host machine (performance might be better these days). Say my machine had a 2ghz cpu - I could say that I was getting "Near Native" speed of a 1ghz chip.

Given those statistics (source - netcraft) why is it then, that we dont see malware attacking apache on such a grand scale as we do IIS? If its possible for an operating system with such a small percentage of the (server)market to suffer from such virulent malware attacks - then why do we not see these problems on linux which has a comparatively small share of the desktop market?
I call bullshit!
I've been seeing this coming for a while though as people find new and exciting FUD campaigns. Does anyone know who funded this report ? need I even ask that question?
I've seen it done - I've seen a few banks and building societies with them dangling in front of the windows. First time i saw one I thought some crazy but amazing display technology had appeared without me hearing about it. When I realised how it was done I thought it was a cool idea but its hardly the height of tech, Its basically a sheet of glass with a "Frosted" panel in the middle. an ordinary common or garden projector displaying the image. I cant say the image was as bright and sharp as they are making these claro things out to be though.
Theres a bit more to it than that - The chip used in the broadcom kit is used in some military applications. As such even if Broadcom wanted to open up spec's they wouldnt be allowed to as the powers that be would deem it a threat to national security (probably something to do with the encryption side of it). Even so it is possible to run these cards under linux using ndiswrapper - I use a belkin F5D7010 pcmcia in my Thinkpad T22 under linux using it. Not sure whether it will work under PPC though.
Discover Vidalinux - Vidalinux is basically Gentoo without the painful install. In addition to its easy graphical installer it has knoppix style hardware detection. I've installed it on two machines already (including a relatively low end Thinkpad T22) . I will probably install it over this stock gentoo machine sooner or later. With it you get the latest gnome desktop and a good selection of packages. It uses the standard gentoo portage. And switching to KDE is just an emerge away if you prefer KDE. Id recommend it both to seasoned gentoo users and those who'd like to try it but are put off by install process.
You can always tweak your make.conf - if that is your bag and recompile stuff afterwards - but all in all Vidalinux is a sterling gentoo based distro IMHO...
In order to understand what it is to be considered art it is helpful to take a look at the process of creativity.
Consider the Bower Bird. During the mating season the male bower birds "create" a bower of pretty petals , butterfly wings, other shiny things and arranges them in an beautiful display. Experiments have been done for example where an observer moved items in the display while the male was out collecting other bits and pieces. Upon return the birds noticed the display had changed and replaced the items in there former positions. Female bower birds choose their male mate by choosing the bird whose bower she finds most appealing.
In other words she is picking a mate that she considers to have the most appealing bower - and hence its creativity.
Can the bower birds be considered artists? I think that they certainly exhibit most of the properties we associate with human-made art.
We can ask the same questions of Computer generated artwork. Does the computer have an idea of what "it" thinks is appreciable ? Can it be called a creation and could others recognise creative processes involved in the work?

lets face it when Cell arrives formally theres going to be little point in ploughing resources into something thats effectively headed for obsolesence
It gets a VM, so I can play WoW.
What VM might that be - that allows you to play graphically intensive games such as WoW? Does this mystery VM somehow support juicy graphics cards?

How about ndiswrapper ? I use this under linux with a belkin 802.11g broadcom based card.
So, lets get this straight ...
.. I wanna know why the spec's for running it under linux aint so low!
Its possible to do Doom 3 on a 7xxMHz PC with the equivalent of a Geforce 3 ?
