I go to the movies to see films that are well reviewed or are about material that just doesnt translate well to the smaller screen.
I buy DVD's of memorable films or stuff I collect (eg sci-fi).
I download films that I probably wont get to see or have had mediocre reviews but whose content appeals to me. I make a point of not downloading stuff I just "have" to see at the pictures.
I know this might sound rather crazy but the beauty of linux is that it would be trivial to create a linux "Starter Edition" equally crippled ? Well, maybe slightly less crippled (so its better). Someone good enough to roll their own distro should do this just to piss Microsoft off...
I havent tried this yet; but does it integrate menu's also (I have KDE set up like an Amiga or Mac (Where the applications menu's appear accross the top bar of the screen.
It looks like this project has been going for some time and potentially very interesting. I am primarily a KDE user although I run GIMP under KDE and have done for several years. I've learned enough of GIMP to be fairly competent with it. I kinda like it now I've learned how to use it. Although I've always hoped for a "Kimp" using the QT toolkit although with the exact same functionality.
I might give this thing a try but as of yet I'm not about to unlearn my Gimp!
I have always thought of Branson as a "Nice Guy" yes, he has his finger in a few pies. But it seems to me that when he takes on a loss making public service (british transport ) and makes a good stab at turning it around for the better of the people.... I Just get the impression that his heart is in the right place. I will never forgive the lottery commision in the UK for not awarding it to branson; who promised that all of the money made from ticket sales would go to deserving causes rather than the percentage (whatever that is) that Camelot give away.
I cant help but think this is a bad idea. Having a built in harddrive (laptop sized?) would have been the obvious choice to go for. What they have effectively done here is killed any possibility for any new PS2 titles to take advantage of the hard disk. I cant beleive sony are making such a grand error...
I think they should be petitioned about this !

Where is the information that says Elite 4 is to be released soon ?
I've been checking the frontier website with considerable regularity and the page which is being linked to hasnt looked different for probably more than year?
If anyone has any real evidence about release dates or confirmation that things are happening behind the scenes at Braben's shop - I'd sure as hell like to know about it. Im surprised this post got accepted because this is not even news its unfounded fabrication.
Nick (obsessed with elite and has been hanging on for Elite 4 news for far too long)
What might also be interesting to speculate is porting the other way around? Would it technically be possible to create OpenGL / Mac games and port to XBox2 (assuming relevant GL libraries were included?) This could significantly help any potential homebrew developers.
There has been plenty speculation already here and on various other sites. Although it looks likely there is nothing concrete anywhere that specifically states that XBox 2 will use virtual PC (or derivative) for emulating XBox 1. What is clear though is if the XBox 2 is to retain backwards compatibility with XBox 1 there are only two ways to do it
a) include an x86 processor
(assuming no need to emulate nvidia chips as the direct x / 3d layer should mean ATI would work as well - assuming game developers behaved themselves)
or
b) use emulation (speculation about VPC would be the obvious choice - although does not lend itself well to directX / 3D)
Question is how cheap are 700mhz x86 chips these days?
They did it purely because they knew that if they didn't, the Chinese government would pick some other search engine to be The People's Search Engine,
Do you think that the alternative "Peoples Search Engine" would not also be forced to block the unwanted results?
Whether google are in the chinese search engine market or not whoever dominates will still be forced to block thoses sites. The chinese people are still losing out either way whether google exists for them or not. Google might as well. I personally think that its a sad fact of life that censorship exists - in some cases (china not neccesarily withstanding) stuff really should be censored or blocked kiddie-pron for example - no-one is going to complain about blocking those kinds of sites.
The thing with google for me personally is one of trust , I trust google to give me unbiased and accurate results regarding the searches I perform. I like the fact that large corporations have just as much of a chance of getting the no.1 spot as my next door neigbors web-blog. Omitting certain sites is not really the same as allowing bias in the results that are displayed.
I somewhat agree with what you are saying. Its fairly simple technology- but what is nice is the elegant way it has been applied. Id like to see a less bulky looking "viewer" but other than that I think its a great idea (kids would love this sort of thing) put to practical use. Even if its not really state of the art!
Not convinced of the relevance of google hits with regards to different languages. People search for information about different languages for different reasons. It also seems fairly logical to say that the easier a language is to learn and use - the less one needs to search for information about it.
Am I the only one here that thinks a) the design of the glasses look like something you might get free with a happy meal? b) the "models" have their mouths open and look slightly gay?
I was expecting something a little more slick to be honest.
You dont need to be a transgaming subscriber to run Doom 3 under linux. You need to use the CVS version - which is available free for download from the transgaming website Here
Still... would be nice to have a native version sooner!
you MUST have a level X computer to run this game!
I havent RTFA (seems to be slashdotted or something wrong with ntl (again)) but how does the level system encompass operating system type?
eg: say my linux box qualifies as a "level 7" system and I go down to my local games shop and buy a copy of doom that says "Works On Level 7 Computers & Upwards" should I be getting in touch with trading standards cus it didnt specify Windows XP SP2 ?
Is this a cunning way to remove the operating system meme from consumers minds?
MS needs to just release a version of windows for the mac that can run as a.app if they want to have real compatibility, but then you'd still have to have a VM for the other x86 applications.
I think that this... is far more interesting...( and along a similar track to what you are suggesting)
When I was 9 i was able to program simple basic stuff on my older brothers ZX81 from books and magazines. My first program was "Measles" which printed random blocks on the TV screen. My understanding of computers at that time was not really of textbook level , in the sense that it wasnt really taught to 9yr old kids in 1983, I understood what a computer was, what it could be used for and what its limitations were, and why a 16k ram pack opened up new possibilities. I understood why Machine Code meant faster programs that could do more things than basic (although the concept of machine code was rather scary). I knew what the different I/O mechanisms were and what they were for- although maybe not by their technical names. Some of this I probably learned off my older brother and other stuff I suppose just seemed logical, or not in need of explanation.
EG - the keyboard was for giving the computer instructions, and the tape-recorder allowed you to store those instructions and play them back at a later date. The TV was used to display the stuff that was going on inside the computer.
In my own way I new what input / output was, what backing store was and what memory was. In addition I had a basic understanding of programs, programming and the things a computer was good at.
Oh, yeah, and that the best game of course for the ZX81 was "3D Monster Maze" in which you wandered through a 3D Maze being pursued by a giant T-Rex..
It was'nt till a year or two later that I obtained my C64 that the real stuff started!
When I was actually taught stuff at school a few years later that I had any formal education regarding computers and I naturally was very good at it because I knew most of it already.
You will neverbe able to tell anyone to "Trust" you or your service's. You have to be very wary of anyone who coins terms like "Trustworthy Computing" expecially from a company that has many secrets, a history of lies. Not to mention a dreadful track record on security.
Trust is something that is earned, you can't just slap the name "Trustworthy" onto something and bye bye bad karma. Im afraid it just isnt that simple. I for one have very little faith that something is "Trustworthy" just because Microsoft says it is.
If they really are banking on bringing out this thing out in november 2005 I cannot imagine worse timing. With PStwo being released, and other stuff Nintendo DS & PSP release dates growing ever closer. The Phantom is technologically dated before it has even been released. No-one is going to fork out for what is nothing more than a glorified X-Box/PC with Next gen eg PS3 consoles on the Horizon. And what about launch titles?
So Im predicting this is going to be a flop before it has even been release. (Unless they suddenly pull some magic cards out of the pack, I just dont think consumers are going to buy into a unheard of newcomer on the market so soon after christmas)
Is that I find it trivial to find illegal copyright movies using suprnova and bittorrent (thats pretty common knowledge) - Now judging by the fact that they dont bother checking filesize or content (as we have seen demonstrated today) how come they havent come down on suprnova to take down.torrent files that contain the name of copyright works? I know that most p2p get around the "storing on a central server" issue by splitting the file into tiny pieces that no one person is offering the complete file at a single time. Judging by the evidence the mere fact that a file contains the name of a work is enough. So how come they havent c&d'd suprnove et al yet? ( its not exactly difficult to stumble accross)

I spent five minutes finding that lot - sure there are many more. Methinks this is just anti-linux FUD again from the Microsoft Puppet Association America.
