  1. A musicians point of view. on Kazaa Going to Court · · Score: 4, Insightful

Speaking from a musicians point of view, I cannot understand why the record companies havent used file-sharing , and other internet technologies. Every single illegally downloaded mp3, could be turned into a marketing advantage.
Plus, it would give record companies a lot more control over content than they have now.

MP3's should be treated like radio broadcasts, one should have to get a license in order to share the files. Its up to companies to find out how to generate the revenue streams, either charge for downloads, or provide other subscription based benefits that traditional P2P systems dont currently provide. All that is needed is a better product, and by that I dont mean better artists (but that wouldnt be a bad idea) I mean that they should provide a service that pisses all over everything else.

My personal belief is that these days the way to make real money is through real physical products, not through arbitrary file formats such as ogg or mp3. Through not just CD sales, but from the T-Shirts, the posters, the ticket sales for gigs, subscriptions to fanzines etc.

I am truly surprised that the record companies have not yet realised that instead of turning every 12yr old, boy-band lovin' girl downloading the latest cheesy pop number into a criminal. They should try concentrating on selling more Merchandise.

Record companies should also realise that its the "Proper" bands, who write their own tunes, who innovate and create their own boundaries, that are the ones that are going to be more than a novelty or fad. They are also the ones who will sell more tickets for gigs, and at those gigs people will buy merchandise.

Yep, and it wouldnt be a bad idea not to screw the real artists over when it comes to royalties either. And while im ranting, for gods sake, lets see the end of these dreadful "Pop-Idol" TV shows !

On that note , If you want some free, legal MP3's from an original band.. Please click my sig and download at will, and please god! try not to slashdot my humble computer :)

The only thing this "Alleged Leaked Memo" could possibly be useful, is that, if Microsoft were to declare it as a fake and use it to cover up the fact that they really are helping smudge the open source community by assist SCO. It might well be a double bluff.

  5. Innovative Goodness :) on PSP To Have PS2 Connectivity, No Shovelware Conversions? · · Score: 4, Interesting

The main crux of this statement, for me is the heavy emphasis on developing new titles for PSP. I dont think Sony are ruling out some ports, as what would be the point in having memory cards/game-saves transferable to the PS2.

However, It is about time we saw more original and new games out there. I am of the Sony faithful crowd. But of late most games are NG ports of things that have come and gone before. To a certain extent this can be said for most consoles. Although stuff like monkey-ball shows the GameCube to be a ground for fresh ideas. But i shouldnt forget Socom and EyeToy :) My preference for dark and disturbing games keeps me with PS2.

I think that its a good idea for Sony to push innovation card a bit more because the games/console market is getting saturated with half-assed ports released on all 3 consoles. Two's company, Three's a crowd so to speak! Id certainly like to see more single platform licenses out there. Right now there is little difference in any of the three consoles where new games are concerned. Its mainly brand loyalty that joe average uses to choose a console. Having a killer app/must have game available only on PSP, is the thing that will get those units sold en masse!

  8. Dubiosity on Xbox 2 SDK Released On Mac G5? · · Score: 1

I'd be really dubious that Microsofts new X-Box SDK only runs on its competitors operating system without some additional M$ hardware. I also find it hard to beleive that the X-Box 2, is sufficiently far into stages of development for them to release an SDK, christ, they havent even decided whether the thing is going to have a hard disk yet or not.

While use of (todays spec) G5's is probably a good thing, do people really think that by the time X-Box2 comes out its spec will be unchanged? A lot is going to happen in the next couple of years technology wise, its far too early for a next gen SDK to be released, expecially before any real hardware has been seen / or developed.

I think this article is pure rumour.

Maybe, rather than loosing interest in games, the real reason you are not finding gaming exciting anymore is because no-ones developing anything groundbreakingly different anymore. There are plenty of games that look good, and play well, but most are re-hashes of things that have been done before.

Having said that, I have had some long sessions on THPS4 on the PS2, which also plays well online.

I hear "A Dogs Life" by Frontier developments is supposed to be quite fun although I've never played it. Its about as original an idea as i've seen in a while. What would else would you expect from David Braben (of Elite fame though ?)

I think we just need more original games.

I could do this on Linux,I suppose, but then I wouldn't also get all the really cool features of Mac OS X or Apple's really cool hardware.

Urm, what "Cool" features of Mac OS X will you be utilising when none of the software for the Email server is specific to the OS ? And aside from the questionable aesthetics of a B&W G3, what is so cool about the hardware? I dont know how old that G3 is but if you are running OSX on it you might do some performance comparisons to Yellow Dog for example.

One of the main things that attracts me to Mac is that I can have a computer that does the things that I have trouble with on linux, firewire, imovie, midi / audio sequencing etc, Linux has a long way to go in this area. I also like the fact that I can still run my favorite apps under OSX. I still cant afford one though!

Apple hardware has gotten really good over the past few years, but with older Macs (particularly low mhz G3's) I wouldnt repurposing as a server with OSX (its too heavyweight with all that gui going on), Linux is going to do a much better job on old hardware by not wasting valuable resources.

While I dont understand the need for mono or dotgnu since we effectively have the virtually same technolgies under linux/open source, and we have the same methodologies with which to build systems. I think its wrong to say that we dont innovate, as Java and related technologies have been around for longer that .NET/C#, Microsoft created/butchered it specifically as an alternative to the already dominant Java,XML,SOAP etc toolkit.

In terms of Internet technologies, Microsoft is chasing Open Source, they might dominate the browser battle, but in terms of server side technologies Open Source is the leader in this area.

Naturally it is sad to see this happen. Many people on this forum will remember what happened to Amiga due to (amongst other things) how rife piracy was. I remember having boxes and boxes of floppies containing cracked games. Having experienced that, I am now much more careful about stuff like that.

I use Linux for my desktop, most of my software is legit, i.e. free as in gpl'd beer. All my PS2 console games are payed for and lovingly arranged on the shelf.

Mac people pirating games are harming the future of games on their platform. Windows is the dominant PC gaming operating system, its been like that for years. Windows warez junkies are all over the place, but software houses can still make money due to sheer market penetration and online gaming.

Bottom line, if you love your Mac and want to see it grow as a gaming platform. Support it or watch it die.
