  1. I Predict, on Why iPod Can't Save Apple · · Score: 1

Beware, vague and sweeping comments, from a linux user!

Apple design iconic products, there is no doubt about that. Aside from the different architecture ppc vs x86 the only real difference is the operating system. OSX, has fundamentally changed many peoples opinion of the system. It is a Unix that "Just Works" as seems to be the Geeky-Mac users catchphrase, as much as I've heard it enough times, that is almost certainly a truism. The interesting thing about OSX, is that unlike windows(which needs cygwin), you can compile or run most open source software out of the box pretty much. Either that or download a binary. For me this adds up to the fact that I can have the cool stuff like imovie and itunes and whatever on a gorgeous looking box or laptop, but also continue to use all my favorite Linux programs.

I often wondered how absurd it was that OS9 users had to buy that old "Fetch" ftp program in order to ftp. There are numerous other pieces of Mac software like this that with the newfound ease of recompiling common opensource stuff to run on OSX must surely be affecting the bottom line some of the smaller oldschool mac software companies.

The end outcome of this is surely going to be that aside from your big companies like macromedia and adobe, with the fat industry standard applications. The smaller software co's are likely to loose out. Hence the mac becomes a less enticing market for new proprietary-model companies to break into. In no means does this mean that OSX will become a less popular platform but I think that it will become a platform with a lot more freedom and software choice.

That in itself is going to keep it going. It is going to be very interesting to watch the Apple camp over the next few years, they have made several commitments to open source , KHTML , Darwin , et.al, It is only a matter of time before the benefits of this way of life become a more and more important part of their business model. So long as they keep making sexy looking consumer electronics, that "Just work" thats all that matters, after all thats what you pay for, aint it ?

(please take my comments with a pinch of salt ;) )

Okay well, things must have changed then, since I last installed Suse (which was some years ago, as noted in my original post!) When I installed the live-iso back then I had to use a rather cumbersome text-based (not very super easy installer thing) in order to get it up and running. Apologies for my apparent ignorance. However I still stick by the fact that there are "Probably" (in quotes) additional non-gpl stuff included with the distro.

I think I'd just like to add to that, I think one of the reasons they dont give a way iso's (apart from the live install one) is that the super easy installer thing is their own non-gpl'd installer. That which is not needed with the live install. With the pay-for edition i'd imagine you get some other extra (non-gpl / pay-for) applications bundled in for the price. I dont think its a bad deal by any stretch.

(Suse was the last os (i liked it) before i started using gentoo, which i've been on for roughly 2yrs now having been so pleased with tit)One of the things i liked about Gentoo was that it taught me a lot of stuff about linux that is generally quite hidden in some of the consumer linuce's like Suse and MDK. Suse is a good distro though id reccommended it to friends.

  10. Re:x-box run linux? on Is the Key to Linux a Games-Based Distro? · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think that the poster is obviously refering to the X-Box linux project, which via a buffer overflow exploit in certain games, enables linux to be installed without requiring a mod-chip.

The inherent open-ness of Linux and its various development kits allows developers to create software and games software without the costly restrictions and control console manufacturers seem to place over their respective hardware.

It should be noted however that Sony have released a Linux based distro specifically for Playstation 2 for exactly this purpose.

My own personal belief is that it is extremely difficult to create next-gen games without the kinds of near-hollywood budget software houses have to throw at it. Im not saying its impossible, but small scale bedroom coding aint gonna produce the kinds of masterpieces that Lionhead or $GAMESTUDIO_OFCHOICE are producing.

I think a better twist on this idea would be to produce bootable CDROM's ala knoppix, bundled with a specific game. This way you remove the notion of operating system dependancy. Linux enables you to build a very low-level OS, with just enough required to boot the game. If something along these lines were to be introduced it would allow mainstream software studios to sell games to anyone who has an x86 machine, regardless of OS.

  13. An annoying article. on What Differentiates Linux from Windows? · · Score: 1

This is an annoying article, it fails to address many of the features of linux that make it so much better than windows.

I am not in any way a kernel hacking guru (so please forgive my brevity!), but simply from a usability standpoint. Linux does many many things so much better than windows. The way it multitasks, the way runaway processes dont bring down the whole machine. Linux just seems to do things properly, and when things do go wrong I can usually understand why, and ten to one its my often my fault.

Many years ago, (before I got into Linux), I discovered the Amiga, I've never used an OS, before or since that was so adept at handling multiple processes. At some stage, the Amiga died for me. At which point I moved onto PC, running Windows. I never ever liked windows. It always seemed like a shoddy OS, multitasking was a joke, and I experienced a lack of control. Stupid things like the inability to perform other tasks while formatting a disk, this and other issues really tugged my chain. How could that underpowered 68000 series machine do such simple things so much better? about 1999, I moved over to Linux, and, although in some respects its not quite the same as my die-hard old amigaOS , It has many of the qualities that my old sweetheart had back in the day. Linux just gets better and better. Kernel 2.6 series is awesome, all my hardware works perfectly without patching etc.

The problem with this article is that it seems to address the design philosophies of Windows series operating systems and Linux kernels. It is masquerading as a discussion of the technical merits of each but fails to address some of the core features and also fails to address how the implementation of core features actually affect the behavior and operation of the systems in question.
