    well, that makes sense. but what i'm not understanding is how would they get access to that data in the first place? is the idea that they, in addition to the insurance carrier, would have access to that data? this announcement appears to be predicated upon that assumption. ?

    while i have to admit that there's a certain animal cunning in that bait & switch (since you'd have to be slashdotter to think of it), wouldn't it have been a whole lot smarter to refuse connections when the referring address is slashdot? i mean, we've seen other sites do this previously.

    if the point of having a site up is to tell people who you are, why ensure so many people will never come back to your site, ever?

    it's juvenile.

    i've always considered it a behavior, and hence, not intrinsically either art or science: it's the execution, IMHO, which determines its nature, i think.

    i've been using opera for several years now and prefer it to firefox, mainly b/c it's got a smaller resource footprint than either IE or firefox, IMX, and it does (again IMX) render pages faster than either IE or firefox. i've heard that said by others who've compared browsers as well. to me, that makes the banner ads not so bad. and is it really credible to dis banner ads considering that there's a banner ad on the this very site? :>

    here's the problem, as i see it: don't we have a lot of these days already? boss's day, secretary's day, etc.? i mean, you wanna talk about scope creep, folks, and here we see it w/ days set aside for pretty much everything.

    i'm not saying admins, bosses & secretaries don't deserve a special day set aside to recognize the ways in which they're helpful (hopefully!) and are appreciated: they do. what i'm saying is that isn't this really true of everybody, though, regardless of job title of responsibilities?

    the idea of putting convicted producers of malware to work fixing the problems they created is probably the single most effective and poetic sentence that could be reached. but i think that's not coming any time soon.

    look at the terms kevin mitnick was/is forced to endure as a result of his sentencing. it seems to me that a lot of people would need to have a change of heart about what sentencing means before we ever see that sort of sentencing.

    while you're certainly welcome to your opinion, IMHO, it isn't like T$R was particularly good for the game, either. they sent cease & desist letters to fansites, licensed altogether too many computer games that were badly done.

    taking all the creatvity out of everything down to the smallest thing? do you not remember the hordes of the complete [noun] books?

    look, while i'm glad you're a gamer and more importantly, playing the game that you want and having fun doing it, if you're going to criticize newer versions of the game, don't dress it up as something it isn't.

    disliking wizards/coast i can understand. finding the cost of change prohibitive i can understand. enjoying the nostalgia of playing the same ruleset for all these years i can understand. these are all perfectly valid reasons and more power to you, suitepotato.

    but some of your arguments were just as true of D&D when T$R was in control.

    it absolutely does: it's part of the locale's background as written. of course, if you aren't playing in greyhawk, you can still utilize it as AFAICT, no plot hooks appear terribly dependent upon familiarity w/ that adventure.

    i picked it up over the weekend myself, while the mrs decided to pick up a couple cookbooks. i gotta say, i really like the first few chapters so far. :> very good, esp for the first-time GM but still relevant to more experienced GMs, IMHO.

    there's a mechanic for PCs to imbue some magical power into their own weapons outside of the magic item creation mechanic, something which i think is long overdue in the game.

    uberdave: yeah, i'm sure they can, but when you come right down to it, speech is still much faster. i seem to recall 40 WPM being considered the desirable benchmark for anything other than executive assistants, etc. i type at 85-90. but that's nothing compared to the speed of speech, which IIRC can run from speeds of 110-120 WPM. why limit the user?

    here's a question though: instead of the folder analogy, would everything have a flat file structure, with users performing search queries for desired files, etc.?

    maybe i'm being obtuse, but wouldn't the sole useful input method for the blind be verbal? as for the deaf: why would you not use a GUI? this seems too simple so what am i missing?

    well, notice the conflicting numbers of sites: websense claims to have found "hundreds", while later in the article, specify that it's now over 200. WTF? i mean, i know that literally, 201 constitutes "hundreds", but c'mon, that isn't normal usage of "hundreds".

    that said: it's basically browser vulnerabilities. if you aren't patching & updating virus definitions, you're SOL anyway.

    i've always felt that de facto realities are more important than formal ones. after all, in a legal sense, a cop can't violate your miranda rights. however, no physical force you're likely to possess is gonna stop the cop from putting a beatdown on you if you honk him/her off.

    similarly: a lot of employers maintain codes of conduct, most of which include an "acceptable usage policy" (AUP). how useful and fun a site would slashdot be if everyone abided by the actual terms of the AUP?

    actually, i think this is very interesting. while SW is traditionally PG, things like the ewoks of ROTJ & jar-jar binks have opened lucas to charges of pandering to kids. while i think that's unavoidable, given the marketing power of the star wars brand, i also think that this is an effort to help shield lucas from that particular charge.

    that said, it's almost certainly going to be the darkest of the movies, what w/ the fall of anakin to the dark side & all.

    i agree: this is a good thing, but i think there's a gotcha. did anybody notice what exactly this app does? from the article: "by enabling authorities for the first time to link information such as credit card purchases, internet chat room messages and arrest records."

    think about the uses to which you can put that underlying code, which is now all open source. now imagine what will happen when someone takes this open source code and perverts it into a complete ID theft tool. what will the M$ press release look like then?

    sci-fi's been offering episode 1 of their new battlestar galactica series on their site. doing this on a PPV basis does make sense. a monthly, per network fee would probably be the result, IMV, and i agree that this would go over well. after a while, perhaps a few parties would get together and create a single method whereby you could do that with a single source.

    but i think the real key here is gonna be price point.
