Well, 'defective by design', I think, refers to *purposely* crippling something. Like a part on the car that will give quickly as to insure future income for the factory who produces more parts. In Microsoft's case, I think the situation being referred to is the HD content crippling that windows seems to be doing on behalf of the media companies.

But, in general, I agree with you. I've run Ubuntu from 6.0 to 7.1 beta. I've used Linux on and off since 1998. I've installed Debian 2.0 on an ancient PS/2 and configured it as a little apartment print server for the AppleWriter laser I pulled out of the trash at work and had to install some odd adapter off of ebay that allowed the ps/2 to communicate via appletalk. And, yes, I *have* seen beryl/compiz thank you very much.

This may seem like nothing for a lot of people on this board, but one would have to admit, I know something about Linux. I'm not a newbie.

I think Vista is a good OS. I've been running it for a few months now, and it's responsive and solid. The similarities with XP are glaring, initially. However, it's the little things that really feel polished. It's a solid operating system, great for the average user, that looks very professional (as opposed to XP's candy-land on crack default color scheme). It's fun to play with.

Download a copy. Crack it. Rip DVDs on it. Share music on it. Tell other people how to download and crack it. Just don't pay those motherfuckers a dime for it.

No. No. When a person changes their operating system because they heard that the GOVERNMENT did it, I'll eat my own pussy.

    Two points:

First: The person who runs Windows on a home PC in order to surf, download pics off their camera, secretly look up porn, and type up the average email or document isn't even going to care about what the hell the government is running. The only case I can think of is when extreme libertarians/extreme anarchists actually take an interest in *why* the government is running a particular operating system. I'm not knocking this; tinfoil hats are sometimes necessary, especially nowadays. But the government, at least in the US, does not hold sway over what popular opinion says about operating systems. If you want to make a difference, load Ubuntu with Beryl, show it to people directly, and blow the fuck out of their minds. I've done it.

Second: Please do not say "the great unwashed." It is derogatory, cliche and pointless. Don't insult the people you're trying to attract. (You are, after all, trying to attract the computer unsavvy).

This does not support your claim that the traffic is being caused by illegal downloads. The responsibility to prove that the traffic, however large, is being used for pirating still lies with you. Simply pointing out that there is a large amount of traffic might imply that popular copyrighted data is being traded. However, the article linked to in no way supports your assumption as fact.

Humans ARE animals. Their life, even counting the lower intelligence, is equivalent to human animal life. So humans want to build a station on the moon and mine minerals, and cows want to sleep and eat grass...who am I to kill that animal when I have other (and more healthy) food sources available?

I don't think PETA has done a very good job. Their "in your face" advertising and campaigns, while having some truth behind them, only anger those who have, allways thaught that eating other animals was AOK. You don't get people thinking by screaming at them...you get a gut reaction.

Now if you honestly have thaght about this and have decided for whatevr reason that eating animals is ok, then great! Go for it! I don't have any more right to tell you what to do than I do to decide when an animal lives or dies.

    I don't consider myself a "wacko"

Please just honestly think before you label me as some sort of fool.

And Ignore PETA. they don't know what they're doing.

Sorry for the off-topic post...I just wanted to balance the conversation.
