First off, I don't mean being a packet logger/analyst for RIAAAA!
Seriously speaking: your local or national police services are always looking for people who can gather information from a hard drive / break crypto / extract contact lists and e-mails / steganographic analysis / plant bugs; you name it. It may not seem like the most glamourous work sometimes but I will guarantee you you'll never have the same day twice.... and you'll get the satisfaction that you're actually helping to make a positive difference.
If you're a Canadian, the RCMP are always looking for people in such positions. Here's a link for their job postings: http://www.rcmp.ca/recruiting-recrutement/other-autre/opportunities-opportunites-eng.htm
I bet the FBI, NSA, etc are all looking too. I understand the US also has a "Cyber-Command" now... but you probably have to be a soldier first, I think. Anyway -- Good luck on your job hunt, non-programming CS major!
If my cylinder was locked in a cold dark vault for 118 years there would definitely be some shrinkage -- why is this so surprising? Especially if it's French like me!!:-)
Roger Waters would sue you... except the lawyer's dead! LOL j/k - no seriously, it's great that the OpenBSD group did the whole Wizard of Oz/Pink Floyd theme. I'm pretty certain there's a bunch of/.'ers around that have never done this so here's the connection:
Requirements: Wizard of Oz DVD or VHS Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon CD
1. Hit play then pause on the CD, so it's ready to play at an instant's notice, but make sure it's at 0:00 or your sync will be off 2. Start the movie. Just at the end of the 3rd roar of the MGM lion hit play on the CD and mute the movie. One of my best party experiences ever. Did anyone else think Toto was the Devil whispering evil things in Dorothy's ear?
Ha! But no, as a Pink Floyd fan I was literally rolling on the floor with this one. Great job guys:-)
Okay I know people probably aren't still following this thread but I found an interesting followup to this discussion on CBC.
Apparently two countries: Lebanon and Mexico were likely sent this sample kit but their labs did not recieve it. Intercepted or lost in transit? Fishy...
I think Patrick should definately fight the decision of the school board to deem Sean "too dangerous to be in high school" -- such a status on a school record will only hurt Sean's opportunities in the future.
Consider when Sean applies to a post-secondary institution. Would a college/university/tech institute accept someone who was "too dangerous" and risk putting their own reputations on the line? I doubt it.
Patrick: keep your son in home schooling -- he will learn more and will have adequate stimulation to grow in many ways. However, you should definately fight the decision of the school, if not just for 'justice', but for your son's future at other institutions.
Put this behind you, but only when you know it will not pop up and haunt you again one day.
Bonk bonk!
Bonk on the head!
Grup! Bonk bonk!
I, for one, would like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Cyber-Hacker Overlords!
System had to run faster. Remove support for all devices not absolutely needed (and, of course, add my sound card).
Kernel 2.0.24 on Red Hat 4, circa 1996ish. Special shouts out to |ferret| who got me into it :-)
cd /usr/src/linux
make mrproper
make dep
make clean
make zImage
make modules
make modules_install
sheesh... now it's just sudo apt-get upgrade....
Should we? No. This wisdom of our ancestors demands that we respect their choices:
Why did our ancestors feel it necessary to kill off the Neanderthals and why did they erase this genocide from their histories?
Did they know them better than we? Can we trust they made the right decision for us all?
It may be that the Neanderthals were the biggest danger to humanity ever forgotten...
Spooky,

Tech: "Okay, ma'am. I think I know the problem you are having. First, double-click on My Computer"
User: "Your computer!?@? How the @#(%) can I click on your computer????"
Tech: "On your desktop or in your start menu there should be an icon called My Computer, please open it"
User: "I can't find anything called Your Computer either on my desktop or in my start menu - Does this mean I have a virus? Is my data okay?"
Tech: "It's probably okay, but first you must open My Computer - it will be called 'My Computer' on your end because it's yours"
User: "Oh I get it now... My Computer. Okay. I click on it but nothing happens"
Tech: "Double click..."
Ah, the memories...

Co-Operated Community Systems are a Good Idea - if Good Ideas are un-American, well then what have we?

If the great engineers of the world were replaced by software the beer companies would suffer the most!
