Or just download ATI's closed source drivers for Linux/XFree86 from their website which do, in fact, support video overlay. The only reason why video overlay might not work for you is if you were using in XF86Config file generated by ATI's config utility from before they supported video overlay.

Frankly, my experiencing have been the exact opposite with FreeBSD and Linux. FreeBSD users and developers have always been easier to approach and nicer to deal with.
That has to be one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. Believe me, most religions are just as much cults as Scientology is. Do you boycott every show that has a non-atheist on board?
Considering that you know nothing about the specifics invovled, what makes you think you're in any position to judge what Core did? This is their call to make, and they made it. Don't like it? Tough shit!
The issue, as pointed out by the Mplayer developers, is that Debian isn't consistent in the enforcement of their rules, making them seem quite hypocritical.
Not odd at all, really. Quite a few people suffer from it, though it ranges from 30 seconds to 5 minutes (and we're just talking about X, not kde, gnome, etc.)... You can ask around on #nvidia at irc.freenode.net. nVidia is suppsedly working on the problem.
FOr a while, I was quite the nVidia defender... Then they released drivers that take 5 minutes to start X with my GeForce3. 5 minutes!! Talk about crap drivers.
Heh too bad you couldn't take your own advice. That must be embarrasing.:)
I did it to help demonstrate my point that being rude to others isn't very helpful. Obviously that went right over your head:-)
Though I agree he could have been more tactful, it's hard to blame a guy for being upset at a mistake that should have been rectified with a little testing.
What about his mistakes (like thinking apt would cause conflicts with RPM)? Does this mean we should now act likes pricks towards him?
His words are what's important, and his words equate to: "Why is this so hard. Make it consistant, make it easy."
The words are only important if people listen to them. No one's going to listen to them (as demonstrated by the overwhelming amount of criticism he's received on Slashdot) if his tone is nasty. This is not a difficult concept to understand.
Didn't it occur to you that maybe people are bitching because they want the problem fixed but are unable to do it themselves?
Then maybe they should thank the developers for the work they've done so far and politely point out ways that their work can be improved, rather then calling the developers fucktard.
I hate comments like these. They're devoid of intellectual thought, but people cheer it on anyway.
As compared to your comment which is devoid of any thought, fucktard?
Good for you. Check on #nvidia on the freenode irc network. Ask about the startup time. Most there will know what you're talking about (even if it doesn't happen to them).
Yeah, the best performing card using open source drivers only is the Radeon 8500.
See, ATI *does* release enough specifications for their cards for developers to create functional open-source 3D drivers. In addition, they release very stable, nearly 100% feature complete, binary only drivers for Linux.
As compared to nVidia which only does the latter, screwing you over if you only want to use open source 3D drivers.
Source? All the source that nVidia provides is a small wrapper that links a binary kernel module into the kernel you're using on your system. This gets built every time you install the kernel module (though you're talking about linux and we were talking about FreeBSD, the same is true under either operating system).
No, believe it or not, I won't find a solution? Why? Because I've worked with one of the guys who ported the drivers from Linux and he has no freakin' idea why these reboots are happening. Last I heard, the 5 minute+ X start times are a known problem that's being looked into.
I'd much rather use the open source ATI drivers for my Radeon 8500. You know: the drivers that actually work, don't cause machines to spontaneously reboot, or take 5 minutes to start up.
You have now clearly demonstrated that you have no idea what you're talking about (or, possibly, that you're trolling). Considering the fight that colleges and universities currently get when raising tuition to support technology projects, your idea falls flat on its face.

If you want 3D support in X, buy nVidia.

You can relieve the problem by setting the IgnoreEDID field in XF86Config (in the NVIDIA section).
No you can't. I've had this suggested a number of times. This problem was not solved by that.

No one, including the author of the subpoena, said that people are required to track other people, now have they?

And how has that changed with this subpoena? You can still think and read anything you wish.
