"Could the gubmint make providers charge business more to subsidize rollout and support of the full cost of service for residential users?"
I suppose they could try, but then there's that whole annoying free market thing that would confound the gubmint's noble attempt to wrest more control from the people.
"lagging far behind countries that include South Korea, Taiwan and Canada...lagging far behind countries that include South Korea, Taiwan and Canada."
Go figure! It's only that the populations of South Korea, Taiwan, and Canada are concentrated in a relatively small geographic area, making it much easier to establish and maintain broadband infrastructure.
We've been over this many times before. It's not really news anymore.
Seems like Slashdot conveniently forgets its hatred of the Film Gestapo when it comes to certain approved movies. Take a real stand and boycott all MPAA films, not just the ones you don't like.
No wonder it took so long to develop. It must have sucked having to start from scratch when that code got stolen. I wonder how the burglars got it out of the building. Did they put it in a briefcase and just walk out the door with it?
1. Kyoto would force manufacturers to spend BILLIONS cleaning up their processes.
2. To stay afloat, manufacturers would have to cut costs. Cutting costs like dropping their American workers in favor of opening up a plant in China.
3. American manufacturing workers are without jobs, and likely without the means to get the training required for high-tech energy jobs.
4. Unemployment skyrockets, economy goes flush down the toilet.
"Well, Internet users are saying fuck that to media corporations."
I'd bet my left testicle that most people aren't downloading entire albums because they want to 'stick it to the man.'
While I suppose that it's more likely that there may be some Slashdotters that would do so to send a message to the recording industry, most music downloaders just want music but don't want to pay for it.
"Doesn't the fact that everybody is so concerned that Kerry lost show that maybe the wrong person won."
In a word... no.
In a little bit more, it means that there are a lot of sore losers out there who will always believe that the idea of Kerry (and Gore for that matter) losing is inconceivable.
I don't recall spouting drivel about how Linux is going to 0wn M$, because M$ is teh suck, and Linux makes the baby Jeebus smile.
I'm surprised you didn't accuse me of astroturfing for M$, because nobody would dare say anything positive about M$ unless they were being paid to, right?
Typical Slashbotting, complete with the inane "M$".
I will agree, though, that Microsoft doesn't need to attack Linux; in the eyes of mose of the PC-using world, their products are already the best. A viable OSS challenger to the Windows desktop is still a goodly ways off, and Microsoft is consistently in stride with consumer electronics, compatibility speaking.
Security is another matter, but even Windows boxes can be kept reasonably secure with the right software (most of which is free) and a little due diligence.
"If people took what they needed, didn't take what they didn't need, and simply shared everything, the world would be a better place. "
And it would be even better if all people contributed equally to society, instead of some choosing to be supported by it. The utopia of socialism ends where human laziness and greed begin.
It might, until you consider that $15 is also the cost of only two movie tickets.
With the quality of movies, lately, being what it is, I'd rather put my $15 toward's a month's worth of entertainment instead of 5 hours.
Umm, that's the whole point; that it's easier to make broadband available to more people when they live in a concentrated area. Pay attention.
Soviet Russia.

You say that as if it's not a valid point.

While I'm tired of "for the children" as well, it's hard to argue that the greater good wasn't served in this case.
In the end, the little teeny-boppers got to their intended website, and a few fans of gay fetish porn were inconvenienced for a short time.
From a business point of view, it probably wasn't a tough choice to make.

If the first draft isn't due out until next year, perhaps Slashdot could qualify "soon" in the headline of this article.
Out of curiosity, after every level of government is done reaching into your pockets, about what % of your gross pay do you take home?
Not a flame, just trying to get an idea of what Canadian taxes are really like.
Try to keeep up:

Remember that mantra in four years when blaming Bush for losing jobs overseas. Signing Kyoto would only exacerbate the problem.

He got all that from not brushing his teeth enough?
I know there's lots of jokes out there (and here!) about geeks and hygiene and all that, but this should serve as a reminder to all of us.
Keeping healthy is just like running a secure server: proper maintenance is vital.
One thing that programming languages force upon you (the programmer) is the ability to get what you want using the least possible resources.
Natural language, while easier for beginners, would make for horribly inefficient code and would be undesirable for any sizeable application.
Turn off that fucking idiot box!
There are other options, ya know. Go outdoors with your kids! Spend time with your family! Make your kids do their homework!
People are slaves to electornic teats because they choose to be.
The funtamental problem with this entire argument is the belief that government should serve as a vehicle to redistribute citizen's wealth.
Here's a radical idea: minimize government and let people make and keep their own money. That's called freedom.

Modern capitalism solves that problem by paying enough for those awful jobs that people will take them over easier, lower-paying jobs.
Not too surprising, really.
Now I'm no economist, but when it comes to the balance sheet, "Tax and Spend" makes more sense to me than "Just Spend".
