Quoth the Dark One: "What is fair use? Fair use is not a law. There's nothing in law."
I always hate suggesting the addition of yet another law to our books, but I wonder if his position would change in the face of a law establishing fair use rights. What would his argument (and purpose, for that matter) be then?
Perhaps they already tried this and failed, but do you think Dell could possibly tap a new market by selling low-cost PCs with RedHat (or some other user-friendly distribution) preinstalled? They'd have the marketing muscle behind such a machine, but I'm concerned that they wouldn't cost significantly less than a comparable Windows system, given the low cost of the OS to Dell...

You bring up an interesting point. I'm glad MY government doesn't fund open source projects. Why should MY tax dollars fund development that is going to be used by people who don't pay taxes to the US?
This is just one more thing that the government has no business wasting my money on.
I never have mod points when I need them. Sure this guy's rant is offtopic, but there really isn't a forum on Slashdot for concerned readers to give feedback about the site or the editors.
Oh well, consider this post a +1 Insightful mod for the parent.
"Not only that but when the current students get out into the workforce in 5 or so years time there is _no_ guarantee that Windows or Word will be the 'required' product to know."
So does this mean they shouldn't be taught? Somehow I don't think the possibility of a software package going obsolete in 5 years is a good reason to not teach it.
"The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is an membership organization that has spearheaded many..."
I hate to play the role of Grammar Police, but it's discouraging to see that TechFocus writers haven't even grasped the basics of proper English grammar.
It's supposed to be "a membership organization", not "an membership"!!
In the Real World, such poor use of the English language reflects very poorly on the organization.

"I dont think you'll find alot of college students who agree with your opinion that lectures should be boring and dull, people want their moneys worth."
I don't think the parent is suggesting that they SHOULD BE dull and boring, but that sometimes they ARE dull and boring. And what constitutes getting "their moneys worth" can vary quite differently from student to student, not to mention the parents who are more than likely putting up the money in in the first place.
When are we going to stop conveying to children (and yes, I mean mostly-grown ones too) that it is not the world's job to keep them entertained? My brother really isn't far off when he calls television the "electronic teet".

By the time a student is of university age, it should be their responsibility to stay on task, not the teacher's to keep them there. Whether a student pays attention and takes notes and whatnot, or instead does his or her own thing on the Internet, their level of diligence will be reflected in the grades.
It is the teacher's job to teach, not make sure that everyone is paying attention and doing their work. A good teacher will try to get everyone involved (it's especially funny when they call on a sleeping student to answer a question; that kind of embarassment solves a lot of attention problems). But it is not their job to assume the responsibility that ultimately belongs to the students.
Now in grade school, this is a little more complicated, but that's a discussion for another article...
"The auto company now has made two sales to an individual that would normally only buy one"
So you're saying that auto theft is good for the ecomony and society as a whole, and therefore should be encouraged.
"and the individual who stole the first car almost certainly would never have bought one, anyway."
Well no shit. If I was told that it is OK for me to take whatever I want without paying for it, I'd never buy ANYTHING!
It's easy to see where things would go if this type of logic were put into practice.

'Facts' like this that can neither be proven nor disproven are often used by people with an agenda.
Oh wait, this is Slashdot, nevermind. That's like asking the editors to check for dupes! :)

Ya know, in most cases that's EXACTLY what happens. I never try to "unsubscribe" anymore, for just that reason.

Wouldn't someone have to write a book about said alternative mail program before we can do a book review?

Wouldn't this story be more appropriate on Jan. 20? Or are you setting yourselves up for a pre-emptive Dupe?
