  1. Don't blame me, it's a hardware problem. on Slash 2.2.0 Released · · Score: -1

John of Salisbury believed that rulers were given power from God (A being of supernatural powers or attributes, believed in and worshiped by a people, thought to control some part of nature or reality), which labeled the prince as a likeness of divinity. Salisbury states that "Law is the gift of God", when law is attacked, God is as well. A prince should rule as his God would approve. Therefore, leaders who wish to diminish the law are symbolical of Lucifer (The profoundly evil adversary of God and humanity, often identified with the leader of the fallen angels; the Devil.). Salisbury believes that the prince, as the likeness of God "...is to be loved, worshipped, and cherished...". It must be concluded that the tyrant who wishes to negate all law to enslave the people, be slain, for he challenges the grace of God.
Niccolo Machiavelli held no belief of derivational gifts of power from God. Instead he focused on the reality of politics, the prince will use any means necessary to sustain his political power. Salisbury's religious foundation seems well, but it is impossible to maintain morality, sincerity, and humanity whilst in the position of a prince. Machiavelli writes that it is necessary for a prince "...to learn how not to be good, and to use this knowledge and to not use it, according to the necessity of the case." This is a more pragmatic view than Salisbury-a prince must be wary of all of the qualities he possesses, and must be willing to use them accordingly.
John of Salisbury's strong religious foundation had a place in Machiavelli's political thinking - religion is to be used as a tool to unite and foster obedience in the people, not to rule them.
