    1. Microsoft Word 98. It does everything I want. Why do I have to spend $500 to upgrade to Office X? In OS 9, it's peachy. Under Classic, it crashes when Document->Format is chosen. Great. Can't change the format of a document in Classic.

    2. Endnote 4. Also does everything I want. Why pay $200 for an upgrade? Does not work with Word 98 under Classic.

    3. USB writer for RCA Lyra2 MP3 player. So, I gotta buy an iPod now for $400? RAM card doesn't appear on desktop.

    4. LaCie DD3 tape drive. Doesn't work under X with the Grappler 906F PCI SCSI card. I guess I'm supposed to buy the Firewire version ($800)?

    5. LaCie 4x4x16 CD-RW. Same as (4) above.

It seems to me that eliminating booting into OS 9 is Apple's way of ending compatibility with a lot of legacy software and hardware. I don't necessarily think that's a terrible thing, but to imply you can do everything in Classic that you can do under OS 9 is just flat wrong.

I take my PB Ti with me everywhere. I bought it 1.5 years ago to give presentations, since it was lighter and more powerful than anything on the PC side. I've given presentations at a dozen places countrywide, using the VGA output connected to a dozen different LCD projectors. No problems, and lots of envy.

Recently, a colleague bought an iBook, since he routinely also makes presentations and the iBook is even more portable than the Ti. However, he was greatly shocked to discover that the iBook has a non-standard video out. What the hell is that thing supposed to connect to anyway? He now has to remember to check to make sure his dongle is in the case before he goes anywhere.

I was kind of smug with my Ti, thinking "well, you get what you pay for. If you want everything included, get a Ti." Now Apple has gone and put a DVI (?) adapter in place of the VGA. This means everyone who wants to give presentations with a new PB now has to take their dongle along. I don't get it. Honestly. If I were buying a PB again, I would seriously consider a PC laptop now. Why go to the hassle of having to keep up with some stupid dongle when you could buy a computer with VGA built in? I really don't understand what Apple is doing, going back to the bad old "we're not compatible with any standard peripherals" days.

  24. Still more evidence for gravity. on Still More Evidence for Evolution · · Score: 1

    Thursday, February 7, 2002.

    Internet wire service.

Scientists throughout the world today announced key new evidence that supports the theory of gravity.

"The data is pretty conclusive," stated noted scientist Ferlin Husky.

In a multi-generational experiment, scientists over the last 100 years have prayed to a variety of gods and animal totems, tried mental telekinesis, and crossed their fingers that creationists worldwide would suddenly be hurled from the Earth and sent on a trajectory that would take them into a fiery encounter with the sun. However, according to Husky, there are still a number of creationists left on Earth.

"They are really pulling down the average intelligence of the world," noted Husky, "and so we thought if they were just hurled into space, the rest of us could get along with more interesting matters. Also, we're sick of hearing that crap about the second law of thermodynamics."

In Husky's analysis of the results, it appears that the force known as gravity is holding the creationists to the Earth. So far, scientists have not found a way to directly modify the theory of gravitiy to eject creationists from the planet.

"We would still have to use rocket propulsion to get rid of them all," said Husky. "That is a compelling reason to think the theory of gravity is sound."

But, some creationists disagree. Phillip Johnson, an out-of-work attorney, responded.

"Those scientists are bamboozeling the public again. We Christians are not held to the Earth by some scientific theory. Gravity is nothing but a lie. It is God's love and compassion that holds us to the Earth."

Johnson later added, "Can I borrow a dollar for bus fare?"

But, if you have to add another $200 in hardware per node, now you're up in the ballpark of a cheap x86/PPC cluster.

I do think it would be neat to fill out a purchase order for 32 PS2's. I bet the call from accounting would come in about 10 seconds after they got the P.O. request.
