DVDs were a somewhat new technology; HDTV, plasma, etc... was right on the horizon. Some friendly, but dumb, individual was ranting to me about these new technologies... it went something like this:
"We don't need better resolution and colors and crap, people don't complain about that or care about that. We need better quality TV shows!"
What he failed to realize is that there are different people, with different skillsets, doing different things to make the world better.
The people building nifty robotic platforms are using different tools and totally different skills and knowledge than what's involved in AI research!
Here on Slashdot, we tend to hear the same thing whenever there's an article about 'net access for Iraq or PDAs for India. "People should give them food instead of technology, because that's more important!

I thought of this idea for a new Star Trek show, back when rumors were flying about the next series after Voyager. I'm giving it away for free. If you need help writing it, contact me.:-)
Make a show about the origin of the Borg. Make it start with a glorious, peace-bringing 'net upgrade. Or an addictive entertainment paradigm. Have factions bending its use... There are endless possibilities, other than the fact that we know one of the end results is the "evil" Borg encountered later by Earth Humans. It could be an interesting, unique show, bound only by the physics established in the Trek universe, and riding on the established brand. But it would be *NEW* and *INTERESTING* if done right. They could address issues that we don't have yet, and explore morality without making goofy, over-blatant comments on current situations... (i.e. explore both the good and bad that comes with a universal lack of privacy)
Oh, and one of the popular rumors during Voyager for a next show was young people at StarFleet Academy. Blech!!! If nothing else can be thought of, the Borg are better money makers.
But if you're going over an insecure connection, (Internet, 802.11b, etc...) there is no built-in encryption. Further, I never found a Palm SSH or ZeBeDee client that allowed for port forwarding and running in the backround.
If anyone does operate a secure VNC setup on your Palm, what're you using?

As many posters have pointed out, one of the results of this process is that other countries are increasing their standards of living. That's great!
Wealth begets wealth.
Yes, there's quite the imbalance between my salary and a Fortune 500 CEO's, and that's not changing much. What is changing is that people in other countries are ending up with more money to spend individually, and end up with their marketplace infrastructures being upgraded. India has Internet connections. FedEx delivers in India. The same countries getting the jobs are also becoming consumers and export markets. There is temporary pain like this for us, but there will eventually be ROI. It just sucks when you're the individual out of a job.
And what happens to us Americans if and when the US faces disaster? I'm not loyal to the US so much as I am loyal to a country that provides:
If the US crumbles in this endeavor (which I doubt), it will do so while a few other countries outdo the US in the areas listed... some would argue that there are other countries that already far exceed it in the areas that matter to them.
First off, they do not ask for mother's maiden name, or full SSN. They do want your Date of Birth, and the last 4 digits of your social.
Also, their site is unencrypted, except for that data-entry frame. That frame is over https, and is using 128-bit RC4, so that shouldn't be an issue.
What is rather unfortunate is the lack of disclosure on the firm's privacy policy... For the lawyers reading, is this protected due to existing client-lawyer legislation?
One of my earlier memories as a kid was shopping for a house with my parents... various bits and pieces that were very me-centric like toys I was playing with, etc... except for when we were in the hallway of one empty house, the realtor opened a closet and seeing a vacuum, made some joke about the vacuum cleaner coming with the house.
So, I asked my parents if they remembered such a house shopping trip, and described the memory. My dad remembered the incident: it was when they were shopping for a house when I was six months old. My mom still doesn't believe it.:-)
Tho, I may be biased there, as I am one of the minor characters. (The look on Mom's face when she read my name was priceless.)
I don't remember reading about Necro Puppy, the evil hexapuma.:-) So, I'm curious... which character? Are you friends with David Weber or is it just a cool coincidence?

You too can play the globalism game.
The "we must control everything from the artist's mouth to the consumer's walkman" business model simply cannot work in todays world.
...which wouldn't be so terrible with some of the look-better-than-they-sound Spears-esque types. :-)
Actually, the walkman isn't quite far enough... they're only happy when they control everything from the artist's mouth to your ear canal.

It should indeed look like the idea from the Google contest. Here's the last line on Google's cached version of GeoURL:
inspired by Dan Egnor's Geocoder.
