one day, I'll have to get a radio so I can use it again... oh well. I remember years ago talking to some guy in Japan on field day... I helped set up a large antenna on top of an historic mound in the park we were set up.
patents are encouraged. People who have patents awarded are rewarded by the company. This is done because our industry (pharma, drug delivery, an biotech) is littered with patents. Most of these patents are to "protect" your innovation and property - but mostly get used in cross-lisencing litigation. Some of these patents are legit and are needed. A lot of them, though, are just there to serve as landmines to others in the field.
even if the merger is agreed upon, which is still several weeks out, so many feel that this will spell the final doom of both companies. I really don't see what either really gains in this merger, other than Compaq stays alive a little longer, and HP will probably now die a little sooner. I don't think the outlook is good for either one right now.

versioning is a crucial element to not just documentation, but to methodology as well, in particular with the field I am in, being the pharmaceutical industry. You must be able to see how things like analytic methods have progressed, specifically when moving from development to production. I can easily see parallels between this and programming.

Since I came into doing lots of "computer stuff" from the outside, intially, when I first read about samba I basically said to myself "That's what I've been looking for!".
And since then, I've networked by freakin' house - all because of samba and netatalk.

but you are completely correct. I was thrilled when I got an old '68 Ampeg tube amp - the sound it was able to produce was great. It filled a void that my solid state amp could not. I fail to see how an ethernet port on my guitar, my basses, or even my saxophone would be a useful thing. You want to put an ethernet port on your microphone, that might be a little more useful. Maybe putting the port on the amp would make some sense, but not on the guitar.
Maybe I'll get a 10/100 port stuck in my neck so I can transmit sound straight from my larnyx to the console...

perhaps this is the fix I've been looking for.
sure, osmium sounds really cool, but is it really all that terribly useful in the grand scheme 'o things? I would think the potential for titanium and iron might be more compelling than the rare earth stuff (so would they now be rare-moon elements?)...
(and before someone starts quoting wonderous uses for osmium, remember, I am a chemist...)
I suppose it really depends on your needs. I agree that this is more useful for the older G3's, but there could be some utility to having it on the newer systems, too. Hell, it could be as simple as someone being an OS freak, and having YDL on their G4 makes them happy...
sadly, my mac (apart from the old SE and powerbook 150) is a first generation 601 with a G3 upgrade card, so I think I'm forever stuck with MkLinux... (this may not be true, but I haven't the time to find out otherwise).
I'll have to check that out further... those actually cost less than the new data loggers (yokogawa's, with built-in ethernet connection)... this would definitely allow me to put a workstation in the process room, and the lack-of-heat bit is very good.
Then I'd just have to get some sort of server to store all the process data...
If this passes, the first thing they should do is sue the entire internet due to its inherent open-ness - it just lends itself to insecurity.
