Naslite (free version) worked great on my salvaged P-100 32MB system running quiety and headless with nothing but a floppy drive and a 300GB HD. Luckily, it recognized the large HD (since Linux/etc bypasses bios) and I didn't need an IDE card. Performance was acceptable (good but not great) for small base of users but I wouldn't want to stick a RAID in it or have more than 5 nodes. The total system consumed total of 25-30watts (a little high compared to NSLU).
Freenas looked good except for higher amount of ram(96m which I didn't have.
You should be ok with Linux and it'll recognize your HDD. Remember, once you get past the boot, Linux bypasses the BIOS. As long as you can see it, it will work. I have Pentium I with 160 GB and I've tried it on all sorts of old hardware (AMD K6-2 300), some old PII system, etc. It did fail on one machine, though. An old Pentium on really old HP with BIOS that just wouldn't see anything above 4 G or so...
I've always had success with 7volts mod using 7 volt instead of 12 volt to power supply fan http://www.7volts.com/. PS is amazingly quiet and I didn't have to buy expensive PS.I've set up 7 volts for all the PS and CPU fans. However it's better to use rheostats and change fan speed according to the need.
OS it is running is RedHat Linux. The IE you are seeing is from the client machine, which happens to be Win. You can't access the server directly, only via the web interface.
I've used various D-link and Linksys routers to work with VPN and has failed miserably. However, Netgear was solid and worked great even with heavy load. Strongly recommend Netgear for any low-end routers.
What impression will the readers have on the ad? Most don't even know what Firefox is. Instead of bunch of names of donors, I would like to have seen a clear message to the rest of the world and even to Microsoft, that IE is the reason for many problems in computers today. "Use Firefox, not IE. Avoid Spyware and Malware. Browse with Confidence, Open-Source is the future of technology", etc... We don't want to look like bunch of radicals or left-wing activists.
Google Desktop = Google + Spotlight. Google Desktop could be used as front-end for combination of Spotlight and web searches. So in future, it'll handle all local searches using spotlight and add extra features like searching gmail and other web-related stuff. zeia award
I have this (7" liliput) for my car-puter. It has VGA input, comes with car 12v adapter & AC Adapter, has touch-screen (although I rarely use it), and resolution is fairly good. 800x480 native resolution can scale well up to 1024x768. It is tiny and very very portable. I carry it with me along with my tools when fixing other PCs.
I agree about avoing CS but not entirely. Instead, find a major that you can apply computer science.
My biggest mistake is majoring in CS and not business. There are plenty of CS jobs that requires extensive knowledge in fields like business, science, and others. That way, you'll be more well-rounded and have more possibility in career choice. http://www.zeia.net/
With implementation of DomainKeys by Gmail (and hopefully others to follow), it might not stop but at least reduce the number of cases.

Doing Alt-tab or virtual desktop sucks because everytime I switch view (or do alt-tab), it interrupts the work flow. Sometimes I have tons of windows opened and I have to Alt-Tab several times to get there. It's really distracting.
I also use dual monitor setup for my church powerpoint presentation. Having dual monitor is an absolute necessary. Having dual monitor for programming is a huge productivity boost as I can have a relevent text on the 2nd monitor while the main IDE is in the primary monitor. Doing Alt-Tab or virtual desktop thing interrupts my flow of thought.
Although spyware is a horrible thing, it has opened a new market for pc repair shops. If I opened a PC repair shop, I could probably make a fortune for just fixing spyware-infected pc's. Most users don't know what happened. Just that their PC just stopped working or became really really slow. "Sure it can be fixed. Bring it over. That'll be $50."
Maybe 17 years olds are just that naive and marketing has gotten it right.

Until someone can come up with something equivalent of Click Wheel... Ipod has the best UI and it shows. When I'm running around with an MP3 player, I don't have time to use stylus to tap on the touchscreen nor do I have the patience to marvel at the color VGA screen in its full glory... just let me play music quickly and easily...
90' too much heat? I lived in Baton Rouge without AC when it was hot and humid in the 90+' and an AMD server cooking in the corner of my room but it never warranted a crash... What kinda server are they using? And what OS? and what was the application written in?

I use both. I use Crimson Editor for pretty much everything except for python codes in which I use Scintilla/SciTE.

Running Smoothwall on old Pentium 100Mhz. Installs quickly and setup is a breeze through web interface.

Another huge area is online gaming. People can interact with each other virtually in Everquest universe that seems to parallel the reality.
