  1. Re:Let me get this straight, too... on Official AIM for Linux · · Score: 1

As an employee of VA Linux working at the formerly-Andover.Net office, I can assure readers that this is most assuredly NOT the case. As has been publically stated, CmdrTaco has full editorial control over Slashdot, and this has not and will not change. Slashdot is not and will not be a marketing site.

Let me see if I get this right: The code which creates the HTML page creates a random number, embeds that into the page, so when the browser requests that GIF, the server knows which random number it just generated? Doesn't really seem very plausible to me.

The number is actually generated by an apache module if you are interested. The number is ignored by image server, its simply used to bypass cache.

The random number is a cache-killer so your browser properly counts pages.

The cookies are part of the anti-spam system, as you would see if you read the now GPL'd Slashcode.

As a matter of fact, it did indeed get into the gory technical details. For instance, Andrew Tridgell who was giving the rsync speech discussed in detail the implementation and the reasons for the various aspects of the rsync algorithm, and why it was done that way. And Dave Taylor's Crusoe speech was all about how to and how not to write efficient applications for portables (a topic highly relevant to Crusoe), and was almost *too* technical.

The only problem with this is trying to fit a good technical discussion of a technology into a 75 minute discussion. It serves better as a whet-your-appetite to get more people interested and involved in the various projects. All in all a very successful conference imho

If you are alluding that the movie is so depressing it makes any problems you may have seem petty, I disagree. A movie that fits that bill much much better is called Happiness by Todd Solondz. American Beauty is about finding happiness and beauty in the world rather than drudging through it with no meaning or significance. Sure he allows all the things that "mean something" in societies eyes to fall apart but he doesn't care! He's doing the things that make him happy and thats what counts in the end. Which is why I find American Beauty a "feel good" movie in the truest sense. It gives me hope.
