As an employee of VA Linux working at the formerly-Andover.Net office, I can assure readers that this is most assuredly NOT the case. As has been publically stated, CmdrTaco has full editorial control over Slashdot, and this has not and will not change. Slashdot is not and will not be a marketing site.
Let me see if I get this right: The code which creates the HTML page creates a random number, embeds that into the page, so when the browser requests that GIF, the server knows which random number it just generated? Doesn't really seem very plausible to me.
The number is actually generated by an apache module if you are interested. The number is ignored by image server, its simply used to bypass cache.
As a matter of fact, it did indeed get into the gory technical details. For instance, Andrew Tridgell who was giving the rsync speech discussed in detail the implementation and the reasons for the various aspects of the rsync algorithm, and why it was done that way. And Dave Taylor's Crusoe speech was all about how to and how not to write efficient applications for portables (a topic highly relevant to Crusoe), and was almost *too* technical.
The only problem with this is trying to fit a good technical discussion of a technology into a 75 minute discussion. It serves better as a whet-your-appetite to get more people interested and involved in the various projects. All in all a very successful conference imho
Is the grain of sand good for the oyster? Probably not, but it certainly causes a beautiful pearl to develop because of it. This is the entire basis of scratching the proverbial itch. People write software because they need it. And in this case, because they need it under a more free licence.
So I guess CmdrTaco is one of the 50% of guys that like to play as females in games. Or maybe he just likes to dress up in women's clothes and act powerful? By the way, is this a MMORPG? I didn't play the original Diablo but heard it was a lot of fun. Just wondering how they plan to avoid the common pitfalls of MMORPGs if it is...
I thought I had heard that Intel was going to avoid the name Pentium 4 because the number 4 is unlucky in Japan. I don't remember why exactly, but it had something to do with the Japanese word for 4 sounding like something else which was "evil" or something like that.
Don't you think that BEEP is more pronouncable than BXXP? Plus, it would be fun to tell people that I write in BEEP. We could even use the censopship icon for related Slashdot stories =)
I would suggest that they support an existing language like Objective C but far be it from Microsoft to do anything cross platform. Heres to hoping this fades into obscurity soon.
Actually theres a little bar in Ottawa that I went to with Emmett last year at OLS called Zaphod Beeblebrox's which serves the Gargle Blaster. I can't remember what precisely was in it, but it was pretty tasty:) I think I will be returning to it this July

Thats not entirely correct. This is the reason that the GPL on the Linux kernel could never be revoked. There are too many authors.
There already is a one-handed input device called the Twiddler by Handykey. Haven't tried it myself but I hear its great once you get used to it and its especially popular among people that build wearable computers
I just bought it on DVD. I had seen it on video a while back but after watching it recently I realized how similar the lighting and things are between Dark City and Matrix. The movies have quite a bit in common, but I still have to say Matrix is a better movie overall.. Dark City just moves a little too slowly at times.
<soapbox> If you are alluding that the movie is so depressing it makes any problems you may have seem petty, I disagree. A movie that fits that bill much much better is called Happiness by Todd Solondz. American Beauty is about finding happiness and beauty in the world rather than drudging through it with no meaning or significance. Sure he allows all the things that "mean something" in societies eyes to fall apart but he doesn't care! He's doing the things that make him happy and thats what counts in the end. Which is why I find American Beauty a "feel good" movie in the truest sense. It gives me hope. <soapbox>

The random number is a cache-killer so your browser properly counts pages.
The cookies are part of the anti-spam system, as you would see if you read the now GPL'd Slashcode.

If you find this hard to believe, check out these mind blowing statistics. Who would have ever thought?!

IP-over-Sonar! Its about time. Now we can find out that all those clicks and whistles from dolphins are actually 56k modem
Slashdot has a story queue so stories can be posted ahead of time. Occasionally you stumble across a glitch and one shows up early
ypocrite! Not only do you ave te devil's letter in bot te te topic and signiture, but in your NAME!
Of course not! But they wouldn't be adding a new Alpha version of a web browser to a frozen distribution.
So while they continue to work the kinks out of Potato, they can add fun things like M15 and NS6 to Woody.

I'm sorry but that movie was horrible. Good idea, but it would have made a much better Outer Limits episode than a movie.
