It's so evil, not like anyone actually uses NTP. If possible you could set your ntp server up for Jan 1, 2004 reboot every machine on your network and viola no more virus. All done? change ntp back to today.
because a brief moment of limited ecstacy is different than being able to stimulate your entire pleasure center for an indefinite ammount of time. (minutes, hours,.... days)
Greaaaat... this is exactly what we don't need. If this ever takes off on a large scale, people will start developing more advanced techniques for neuralfeedback. Once this happens, and people are able (if at all possible) to control their neural responses well enough, we will see senseless mental masturbation. Just setting up thought patterns in the correct way to cause absolute ecstacy. If this becomes possible, I fear for humanity.
In Germany they came first for the Communists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me--and by that time no one was left to speak up. --Martin Niemöller
OK maybe a bit extreme for this circumstance.... but I can't think of anything more apt to reference here. SCO is going after IBM now, they will go after BSD if they see a resurgance/any money in it. If MS has BSD product, they (SCO) will--eventually--be able to extort *more* money from MS as well, or at the very least ruin the whole free software movement.
Ok, maybe a *little* extreme, but this FUD is sure as hell getting out of hand. (also, how long before we see SCO filing suit in Munich? or Oregon, or any number of other areas where linux has been in the news?) Decision makers will very quickly decide: "Well, regardless of whether or not they really do own the property It's cheaper to not be sued."
Immediately thereafter Linux will become a blip on the radar, unless there is a backlash at SCO.
Someone needs to take hold of this massive outpouring of linux user/developer frustration. Whether that be the FSF, GNU, or Linus himself, someone needs to form a NPO who's specific purpose is to tie SCO up in court. If I can spend 100 dollars to bankrupt SCO and guarantee the several hundred Linux installs I have had to maintain/setup over the years are safe, I'd do it, and I bet some large linux using orgs would pay much more for that as well.
If you do not take such and such down, we will be forced to take legal action... is a bit different than, if you don't buy our license, we're gonna sue your ass.
You can run it under WineX with little hacking.... The current client is lightweight enough to allow for VMware console play. I have done both, and prefer VMware running win2k (as It's easier to setup.)
The game is fun, a good eater of hours. Psycochild, and his team love their game, and they do remarkable work for a 3 man crew.
IANAL so, STFU In the united states it is illegal to threaten litigation. However, it is not illegal to surruptitiously mention litigation, and then offer an "alternative" (a cash settlement for instance) or... in this case, a license.
REGISTRY... yes... that's an easy way to do this... an easier way is a little thing called Policy Objects. If you are running enough XP systems that it warrants the horrible tradeoffs of having an active directory network, GPO's are an easy way to do this (albeit managing them, and making sure the GPO changes propogate on a network can be a pain in the butt.)
You could also script a global USERS registry change and push it out to a buncha systems... XTEQ X-setup can do this for you, if you aren't adverse to hacking your registries
Or, quite simply, you could log in as the USER you want to change the options for, (in a limited environment this might be easy enough.)
Excepting for those articles which mention usability studies showing how LINUX needs work to make it as a desktop OS.
I agree entirely with this, until Linux has an easy to use Build system that's transparent to the user. A standard method of installing applications that's cross GUI (read: window manager) compatible....
As some have mentioned an API freeze, or a *vintage* software compatibility project (similar to DosVer.) So that distributing a cd (Sim City 3000 for instance) would be compatible with any version AFTER that of the linux it was built for.
Well... you have many different options. First off, I'd say don't stop with just money from your school for this. APPLY FOR GRANTS. Now, that that is said, I'll continue.
Setting up a server for a school environment is one thing, but setting up an internet server for your school environment is another beast, if you are going to be housing 100+ webpages and if even just one of them starts getting hammered without some good QoS and decent Bandwith Quotas on those sites you're gonna run outa bandwith. (rule #1 in providing services to schools, if kids have bandwith they WILL use it.)
As many have pointed out, keep this thing off the school network, APPLY FOR A GRANT, (get it E(ducation)RATED) But get a pipe for this seperate from your school network. a T1 circuit can be insanely cheap Erated (20-70$ a month).
Always use this machine with the idea that the data WILL be compromised. If at all possible a tape backup system for the mail/website data would be ideal.
Finally, no matter how much you want to, and when you get swamped with buerocratic nonsense halfway through the year, DON'T let the students administer this machine if you want it to be low maintanence. If you do, the server will be in disarray more often than not, as the server will be a playground for the noob.
And finally, a border firewall would be excellent, even better would be something like a iptables fw prerouting the ports you want access to from the internet. And if you are paranoid enough, a local firewall on the webserver itself, although some would question the reliability of this.
As for hardware, it really depends on load.... and if you were only given 4000 dollars for internet line as well... as an educational estabilshment you're screwed. Normally the telco would waive the install fee on a T1 because of the absurdly high rates they charge, but unfortunately if your school is erated, you gotta pay out of pocket for that... which can range from $900-1300.
So an iptables firewall PII or something, with enough ram to handle a few hundred thousand nats ebay says.......(there are probably a few of these laying around at your school) $240 Two nics for the firewall, 5prt mini switch ~$50 T1 Installation fee: $1100
left over for server?
2630
even with Ed. pricing, that's gonna be a pretty thin machine.
Since this isn't life or death, you could probably get away with a dual XP machine, with 512m-1gig of ram an IDE raid array and beg really hard for some money for a tape backup.
ICQ lite, is not bloatie, is tiny, functions by default nearly the same as the original ICQ. Trillian is FULL of bloat, is spyware laden and has several different memory leaks that make it stupid to leave in the background while playing Online Games (especially FPS dependent games AAO etc.)
There are much better ways to communicate yes, but nothing as readily available (50%+ of internet traffic I see in my web logs is from AOL on average) as AIM, so the two largest IM services merging (ICQ was at one point, I don't know if YIM or MIM beat it out... but whatever happened It's more people I can talk to in ICQ-Lite)
Except it would be illegal to mention such a thing in a reference call... all you are *legally* allowed to do (from my limited knowledge IANAL etc etc) is confirm/deny the time period a person worked for you. Thanks to several lawsuits, to do anything more you can be sued (even if you are telling the truth.)
if they can prove that more than 1% of the code (more than a million, but lets stick with a million cause I'm too lazy to hit the calc key.) that would be more than 10,000 lines of code in *violation.* If this were the case, I would agree.... BUT if SCO is jumping all over the Linux communities nuts for things that you would be hard pressed to prove two students sitting next to each other couldn't create ON ACCIDENT.
College CS professors have programs that will check these things specifically for cheating (Even identical commenting isn't impossible, but identical spacing patterns are very very very very unlikely.)
SO SCO give me the source you already say it's offending, so you can't take it off my CD. (I ALREADY HAVE YOUR SOURCE SCO MUHAHAHAHA.) We rewrite it, recompile, and viola any *offending* source is gone.
Don't like that case? Then, I'll copy my Caldera Linux CDS (copied for asethetic purposes only I assure you) which I downloaded 2 weeks ago from your site: ftp.sco.com. I'll recompile (that is if your kernel will even make config.) Sue me, and sue yourself.

No... I used "offending" code loosely because that is what I have always used to represent SCO's original claims that Linux is an unlicensed (stolen code) derivative or Unixware. I read the article, it had no substantial claims: (READ, A BROTHER OF A FRIEND OF A NEFEW OF A GRANDSON WHO'S STEPSISTER KNOWS A GUY WHO WORK-ED (NO DATE GIVEN) AT SCO.)
This exact possibility HAS been mentioned before NUMEROUS times in other SCO threads. Now if you actually followed them you wouldn't use your "excellent" account to mod me down then comment with your hater. (READ: INSUBSTANTIAL CLAIMS SIMILAR TO YOUR INSUBSTATIAL CLAIM OF MY NOT RTFA)
SO, as I was saying, this WAS brought up before. AND I won't believe this until I see it in court or SCO settles for peanuts.
NOW, if you wanna hate cause I got FP, please do, but don't yell at me for misreading my post.
I would really like to know if any companies running Caldera were being threatened by SCO.... (since there are so few, and those who read slashdot, most likely wouldn't buy SCO products to begin with)
It would be interesting to find out, since they are claiming LINUX is holding offending code, since LINUX in this case can only refer to the kernel itself, and since Caldera released the linux kernel (on their FTP) not that long ago, how can they claim any other company is at fault for using, or distributing the same thing?
No duh. How many people have been saying this? AND how many people are ignoring the fact that SCO group themselves released the "offending" code under Caldera? Everyone but IBM it seems, since they think this lawsuit is frivolous.
