At least a bit of competition might bring down Apples rediculous pricing regime. For the hardware you buy, apple are simply laughing their asses off making people pay for some nicely formed plastic.
The MiniMac is a perfect example of a 'computer' that as standard is so poor in terms of value for money it is well.. pointless.. you could easily buy a decent specced desktop solution? Until apple starts commiting to competitive prices its almost a certainty these sorts of devices will be bought in lieu of MiniMacs. Look at the Shuttle boards and how many mini pc boxes have been available for them for the last few years!
What is more sad.. is the Apple fanboys that will propogate the 'Mac Quality Myth' that you get 'something more' for your money with Apple - think about it, how do you think they generate such huge amounts of profits (money earnt minus cost to build!) in recent times - by ripping people off.. And as a huge benefit.. Im betting these MiniPC's will be upgradable.. and very configurable.. unlike.. say.. a MiniMac.
Seems slashdot has keen on propogating pointless coding arguments, that just keep on keeping on.. glad to help out using up data space, on pointless topics..
Considering Sony's previous chips, I expect the Cell won't even be that great for gaming. More likely it'll be an overhyped, underperforming CPU that won't even match the power of other contemporary consoles, much less that of a general purpose PC CPU.
Another classic ill-informed console fanboy comment. Where does slashddot get these quality posters.. let me guess.. XBox roks!! right?
A topic that guarantees to get every programmer to post to slashpot.. what batter way to stir a programmer.. tell them compilers can do a better job...
Well if free thinking means being innovative.. not running with the sheep, and developing new ways to tackle gaming data problems(in hardware terms.. as the quote mentions).. yeah Id say free thinking.. a bloody boatload more than MS - who are much more into stifling, non-innovative, and marketing reliant products. I didnt see MS go near bankruptcy when making Xbox - however SCE went very close with PS2 - to me that shows commitment, determination and understanding.. isnt that even slightly admirable in a world of stupidly aimless companies?
Hence the posters comment.. draconian with their hardware... maybe you need to get off the drugs you are talking about... you need some critical thinking time...
For most things, life needs a few critical elements, gravity being one (otherwise water may not hang around for life to be created - no amino acids). With gravity then comes the problem of escaping you original home (well down the track of course) - that genuinely requires a tool/assitance of some form. While I dont doubt what you suggest is not a wonderful concept (or new, very Childhoods endish..).. mankind through tools has begun its move to a new frontier. Transitional?, that is possible, but this is a _critical_ transisitonal state. One which brings the ability to possibly escape 'planet wide destruction scenarios' and to 'spread' our race throughout space - the worry here is we just move to another planet to rape and pillage.
With our 'advancement' there are some big problems we have created that suggest our 'spiritual side' is extremely flawed. Being an entirely tool based society we no longer rely on our evolutionary/spiritual abilities to get through the day, let alone through life - everything humans do, is through the use of some tool. Even religion and spirituality. Pushing us further away from ever being able to understand/know/feel the true nature of ourselves:-)
Think carefully about it next time you sit in a church, read a bible, or post on slashdot. As a race, we have irrecoverably doomed ourselves from knowing our true self's. In fact to rid oneself of all posessions, wasnt far wrong from JC..
Also it is quite hilarious to read how people put humans up on the pedestal of intelligence on earth - making and using tools doesnt make anyone smarter/better. We are happy to even eat some of the most intelligent lifeforms on this planet - octupus, and squid for instance. Yet we think it barbaric/distasteful to eat dolphins - intellegence may as well just be a beauty contest.
My personal guess is that mankind has to be able to just be kind to one another before anything good can come from this race. Its almost ludicrous to consider ourselves even vaguely intelligent while the western world is happy to rape and pillage the poorer nations, and then also go destroy their countries and homelands in the name of 'good' ?? (Iraq isnt the example here.. there are soooooo many more).. go figure.. humanity needs to be more than rhetoric, vengence, hatred, religious fervour, and snazzy tools...
Until we have a society based on community rather than economy, I think mankind is probably in for more of the same... so spiritualy or with tools, I dont expect us to go anywhere in the near future at all, let alone see anyone who wants anything to do with us swamp rats..
The cell is going to make waves - in more areas than most people are willing to admit/understand. Sony now has such a large portion of media control they are now able to bring them all together for a single combined solution - and that means at the hardware level. If you have ever written hardware level software you will be jumping for joy. Imagine it, a nice singular interface (hardware) for ALL electronic consumer devices.. who cares about the high level software that will come.. its the low level software that will benefit inifitely.. These are the sorts of innovations that allow hardware to actually move into a new style of connectivity. And I admire Sony for: A - Having the balls to go into so much debt for the R&D on this - it could cost them their company. B - Looking past then next 2 years of development, and really looking 10+ years from now. C - Not following the pack, with the x86 mentality that has railroaded cpu creation into a jumbled bloody mess. D - Concentrating of consumer devices that not only function well, but look good. I doubt anyone here can defy Sony's good quality of products - I doubt you will find an American manufacturer who can compete there.
I give these guys the thumbs up, for thinking different (just read the patent on the cell and you'll know what I mean) and for not boxing themselves into a copy cat company..
Future prediction - Cell will very likely become a standard baseline for electronics manufacturing for the next 20 years.
Thats just not true. Even in the industry I am in, supplying defence with CG simulators, it is just wrong to say MS is the best way to do it. It is a very naive narrow-minded person who thinks this, when there are just so many solutions to a problem. This is the biggest problem with the military in any case, they have too few people who understand the project requirements in technical terms and hire the cheapest contractor they can find - or the one that uses the 'industry standard' CG gear. When most of the projects I have been working on have been PC based, and we opted for windows and the 'military standard' rendering solution, the cost was astronomical for each client install.
Recently we have proven that the same can be done without MS, without the 'industry standard' software (I'll point my finger at Multigen here!) and with major costs savings as well as highly improved graphical output and performance - our sims are being regarded as some the best the military people have seen (although when you look at what they have been exposed to.. poor people).
Imho MS is far from an ideal solution and I think this is especially so in the military when projects are often tailored to solve an exact problem - this being the case, you need more exact solutions, not poor generic ones.
I mean seriously 20+ years in the software business, and never met an unethical person? I dare say you must have been programming an a 'safe room' and have never come out to talk to anyone...
I have also been involved with software development for quite a time, and what you say is an absolute rarity. To say youve been to 10+ companies with ethicical people, is just astounding.. or a lie.. I think you need to wake up and smell the cookies.
Most of the companies I have worked at it was commonplace to use lying as a buffer between management and the 'grunts'. Always the wonderful pretty happy news at company meetings - the following week the company lays off 30 in a bid to stay afloat. I worked at one very ethical company, and it was good, but thats not to say they never lied. You always have to twist the truth no matter the conditions in big business. Stating the truth is so uncommon, its almost an accepted practice to lie to your customer, and they usually know it!!.
You are obviously living in a pretty naive world..
The funny thing is that the Onyx4 is now only 40K!!! whereas our Onyx3 (which is a vastly poor machine in performance) was 100K + depending on your IR config. Also a nice note about the Onyx4, they are running ATI Radeons. Lots more poly throughput.. but PC's are definitely likely to destroy SGI's market. It'll be gone in less than a year. Our sim gear outperforms SGI hardware on PC by substantial amounts, and at substantial cost savings. Also, the sim software for SGI is waaaay out of date (yes Multigen-Paradigm.. you know what Im talking about)and insanely expensive, our DirectX software is miles infront in terms of features and costs. We couldnt hope to produce the shaders we have in DX on a SGI box - or I should say I have tried, with some very sad results. The end is nigh for SGI.. and this is just a quick way to get some cash to last a little bit longer..
..the neverending stream of/. scientists (or as I prefer to call them, slashheads).. to think the world is full of such extremely knowledgable people just makes me feel safe at night.
Hahahahah Intellectual cowards.. now theres a quote I will use. I love slashdot.. its like fatbabies.. but with people that think they know everything.. oh.. wait.. thats fatbabies..
I hope to hell humans dont get off the planet and infect the galaxy/universe with our disgusting warped sense of self-importance and pathetic respect for other life. I really hope some large rock makes sure this doesnt happen... Unitl we can live together we have no right to go anywhere else..
I just looked out the window after reading this post.. its wrong.. it still is the most boring city.. in Australia.. theres nothing to see here.. move along..
Well.. this is always a common theme with user interfaces. Just because a tool has a different user interface doesnt mean its worse, just means its different and the new user isnt 'used' to using something different (god help us if we have to learn something new and accomodate a new idea!!). This is often a case in point of the Windows V Mac V Linux V Solaris V IRIX and so on.. most often the interface is implemented to be used in a particular way. Just because it isnt the Microsoft way, or the Adobe way, or the Macromedia way, has little relevance to its UI design. I personally like it, as I am not much of a fan of the MDI layout system, mainly because you end up wasting screen realestate on MDI style tool windows and bars, but thats my preference... it doesnt make one good or bad based on my preference though..
I have also found that people can pick up the use of gimp quite quickly - having all the tools on the right-click is very handy and very productive, as is the script-fu tool. I have been using it commercially for a bout a year now, and I am quite comfortable with it... and have had quite a few people on our team move over to it, mainly because of some of the features it has. If a gimp user is a fan boy then I guess I am.. at my age I'll take any flattery that makes me sound younger...
Amen. This is so utterly the case. The amount of code I see that goes to the customer with pointers unchecked, no black box, white box testing.. memory leaks.. the list goes on.. and so often it is just because ppl are lazy and dont do parameter checking or test error returns. Some of the worst stuff I have seen was shipped in debug because 'it wouldnt run in release'.. omg.. the number of people programming who havent even used debug, plain scares me..
Now if we can combine that awesome Xbox mod (The clear one the size of my fridge).. and this.. well.. I can only think itd be the most revolutionary non-portable device on the planet.. I cant wait to see how much it goes for on ebay...
It seems you want assembler and C to disappear. Good Luck.. just choose your next OO language and move on.. thankyou..
OO does this.. OO does that.. OO does this.. hrm.. how is it executed.. oooh.. look its a REP STOS.. what the hell are you doing in there.. that CPU cant possibly know how to call that.. thats wrong.. wheres my OO.. I want my OO back..
How in the hell did this get moderated to funny? Maybe Stupid.. Dumb.. Ignorant.. Boring.. Idiotic.. but Funny? Ive seen drying paint funnier than that.

Comment: A correlation cannot be made without some causality - regardless. Without some cause and effect a correlation would be impossible to make. So in essence your argument is false.
How is it then, the high majority of nuclear testing is still being done by the U.S.? Why does the U.S. need to continue to poliferate if what you say is true? The only people in the WORLD to have used a nuclear weapon against anyone else are the U.S.!!!! And two of them!!! Please spare me the rhetoric about first strike. The only country I would deem MAD enough to start a nuclear strike IS the U.S. Look at Iraq, even without U.N. backing they decide to attack another nation. Thats not aggressive is it? And why the hell is the U.S. developing "new" types of nuclear weapons? What the hell have you lot learned?
SWEET FUK ALL.
You wonder why there is so much angst against the U.S... and look at your attitude. You dont even realise that the biggest nuclear whore and weapons maker is the U.S. itself???!!! And for what? Nuclear domination?? Where are your brains?? Dominate WHAT?!! You have a huge number of starving and dying people in your own country, and you cant seem to fix it.. and you preach to the rest of the world about the beauty of democracy and capitalism. Ho bloody ho.. I hope you sleep well in your nice house, with your nice bed, with your nice nuclear weapons, while many of your own country men and women freeze in the cold. Talk about slightly maligned priorities..
What is the deal? NWN has to be one of the most over-hyped over-rated games of all time?? Why the hell people dont complain about the stupid loadtimes.. a party of two???!!!!. Are these not glaringly stupid problems that the developers really dont care about?? Party of two.. really is turd in anyones language. If two is a party.. what is three.. a crowd?? Im obviously in the minority.. so I'll shut up now..
