  1. Academic Research Empires on Moving from Corporate IT to Science? · · Score: 2, Informative
Well, if you go to one of the Enormous State Universities, it's likely to be a Research Empire. Meaning, you spend all your time writing proposals and grubbing for corporate money. You have an array of graduate students to do all the interesting/real work for you.

That's what I saw when I was getting my Ph.D. from a prestigious technical university (it's name begins with Georiga Tech).

The tough thing about activism in the 21st century, is, how the HELL do you choose? There's too much- impossibly too much that needs to be addressed.

Maybe just pick one where you can focus some good effort. If everybody picked one, we'd still be a lot better off. Instead of trying to save the whole freakin' world all at once, but then, that _would_ be the American way.

We're all _well_ above average, don't you know?

BTW, I wouldn't make a lot of noise about excelling in a government-run school. All you have to do is breathe, and you're at least an average achiever. Even at universities, grade inflation is a well-known phenomenon.

I wish there were some reasonable way to insure against a slippery slope.

Can't--some people are evil, and will use whatever they can get their hands on to achieve their ends. If that includes collected data, they'll use that. The slippery slope is just some opening to some method for evil people to get what they want (typically: power). The answer: an armed populace that is willing to revolt if pushed too far.

  16. Re:Slavery on WorldCom Fraud Doubles · · Score: 1
It comes down to: you can find conformity in everyone. Everyone conforms in some ways, because the benefits for them outweigh the costs. Unless you become a hermit. But there is an enlightened conformity, where you say, "sure, I have to look like a stuffed suit, but the job pays well and is intellectually interesting, and I really don't care if people think I'm a drone, I want _this_ job". So in a way, you're non-conforming to the "anti-drone non-conformity" crowd.

Now that I think about it, you could spin any action to be conforming or non-conforming, because there are so many people willing to comment on your behavior in some way...

  17. Re:Slavery on WorldCom Fraud Doubles · · Score: 1
The evil of Conforming by choice is less than that of Conforming for money. And choosing to be in an environment where you are forced to conform in appearance shows a lack of self-respect.

You are totally wrong. Conforming due to external pressures is preferable to being a conformist down to the depths of your heart.

Your comment is funny, but I felt like I should add a counterpoint: The only way to keep our economy from going to shit is to not panic and continue to support our capital markets.

I find it amusing that so many people think our economy depends on tricks of the mind to keep going. That is, it all depends on "consumer confidence" and stuff like that. If that were really true, then all we'd need are a bunch of Pollyanna PR types cheering us on.

Economic reality can be found discussed in more depth at the Ludwig von Mises Institute.

In this case, Microsoft was unethical and sneaky. And its good to cast a watchful eye toward the corporations lest they wrong us. But to rant and rave and call this the end of American society - well... if you were wronged then please do all you can to reform the system. But don't play the victim and blame all of society's ills on the lack of interest of the American public - its quite possible that they have more important things to worry about.

Well, it's going to end sometime, somehow. Might as well be geared up for it!

It's amazing to me how many people (especially those *in* the US) can't see this coming. How many people think that the US is, and always will be, indestructable. Sure, we can make great speeches and pull together for terrorism, but our government ``for the people'' is being run for the advancement of large corporations instead. I've always wondered what was going to befall this country, and government corruption seems like it will top the list.

I thought all we had to do was sing "God Bless America" at the top of every hour and stick some "Power of Pride" stickers on our cars and everything would turn out all right, just like they in the movies. Where did I go wrong?!
