You can set it as the default in the options dialog if you want. And I'm sure companies that use group policies could set it as the default company wide if they want.

Your reasonging was true for me as well. I got the Nook Simple Touch for Christmas. It was exactly what I wanted- I can download a new book (instant gratification) but I'm not distracted by the ability to go on reddit/slashdot/facebook/whatever. I just read the book I wanted to read. The display is really nice and as you said, the battery lasts for a LONG time. It was a good choice.
I couldn't agree with you more. I really like the new layout of facebook, the new iGoogle layout, and the new flickr layout. But what am I supposed to do, post in forums for all three sites and talk about why the haters are wrong? Not worth the effort... I'll just keep using these sites and those who can't stand the changes can go elsewhere.
I don't think it's a waste of money at all- I think it's a great idea. It just doesn't have as much immediate use to the average internet user.
I mean, maybe we can't use this map to get driving directions or whatever, but what if marine biologists create mash-ups that show migration patterns for marine life or something? That would be worthwhile.
I bought Etrian Odyssey about a year ago for the nintendo ds. You explore a labyrinth, drawing the map on the ds with your stylus. I think it's great- take a look: http://www.atlus.com/etrian/
If you don't mind stepping out of the sci fi category, here are some of my favorites:
1. Winter of Our Discontent (Steinbeck) 2. Great Expectations (Dickens) 3. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (Pirsig) 4. Catcher in the Rye, Frannie and Zowie, Nine Stories (all are by Salinger) 5. anything by Kurt Vonnegut 6. anything by Tom Robbins 7. Mythago Wood (Robert Holdstock- actually any of his books too)
There are so many good books outside of sci-fi. Although I admit, most of my books are sci-fi or fantasy.
Some things to think about: replication, stored procedures, triggers, subqueries. You may not always need all of these features, but often they can be very helpful. For example, imagine you have a web based application that (unfortunately) uses a couple different languages for it's front end. Some processes, like adding a new user to a table of users might require that you cross check data in two different tables. If your database supports it, you could write a stored procedure that performs that crosscheck for you. If it succeeds, it allows the insert statement. If it fails, the database returns an appropriate error. This way, you don't have to perform that logic in your program, and even better, you don't have to code it in two different languages. This is a simple example. I'm sure others will provide many more reasons. In short, there are still pretty significant differences between a database like oracle or db2 and something like mysql. Don't get me wrong, mysql definitely has it's place, but like so many things, there is no single database that's appropriate in all situations.
can you imagine when some congressman (or woman) argues in favor of say... restricting exportation of cryptography software or something? Suddenly they get 20,000 angry/.ers flaming them!:)
I think the government will always want to have some kind of buffer between themselves and the people they represent- it keeps them from having to deal with problems like that.
I don't think you're worthless. I never post here either. But I must spend at least an hour a day here. I don't own a tv or listen to the radio, so my only connection to the real world is/.
I've never made friends with anyone through the site, but I do start to recognize the regulars after a while. I don't think we're worthless because of that. More than likely we're the silent majority.
was that I couldn't get people to believe it wasn't real. I argued on the phone with a friend of mine for 20 minutes, and he still doesn't believe me. He says the towns depicted in the movie are denying the truth because they don't want a bad image.
If that's not good marketing, I don't know what is.

Yay for using apatosaurus, and not brontosaurus!

No single group of humans has a monopoly on ignorance.
An "underdeveloped propensity to save"?! That sir, is funny.
For sale: baby clothes, never used.
I didn't write that, it was a famous writer, possibly Ray Bradbury.

For the record- I've actually read this far. (I'm at work) :)
JFK Jr died? How come no one tells me these things?
