Politicians (judges included since they run for office via the same dog and pony show as legislators) are a screwed up bunch of people. They assume everyone else is as screwed up as they are, so they come up with laws to take away our rights. They're like clergy who abuse children and in their guilt scream "Sinners!" from the pulpit at everyone in the pews, assuming they are also doing disgusting things. What else do you expect from people who just want to extract money from the rest of us while creating nothing. It takes a strange mind to pass out a collection plate while calling you a sinner, or tax you while taking away your rights.

I think it's happening already. I develop in both Oracle & SQL Server environments and for years organizations I've encountered used Oracle for one purpose and SQL Server for another. In the last two years however, many of those companies are interested in totally replacing their Oracle databases with SQL Server.

As far as MySQL, after doing a lot of development with it over several years during the late dotcom/early bust days, I haven't worked with it lately because there hasn't been much demand for it. It'll be interesting to see if that changes with Sun's involvement.

A lesson seems to be that you shouldn't lie... he didn't really have another job offer but said he did. If by "learn about reading people" you mean "learn who you can lie to and get away with it" I'd say that will only get you so far.

...just wait until a few weeks before the next big delivery and tell your boss you've found another job offering you what you think you should get paid. Since he's on the hook, he'll probably try to keep you happy.

Nothing like playing poker with your career. I had a coworker who pulled this bluffing stunt only to have the boss reach out to shake his hand and wish him luck at the new job. The guy thought he was an invaluable software developer and had a rude awakening. He finally got a job 8 months later at a help desk.

  9. Re:NBC? on NBC Activates Broadcast Flag · · Score: 1

It is a television network that had Seinfeld back in the 90s. I haven't watched a minute of NBC since then, so they can go nuts with this flag thing as far as I'm concerned. Actually, all the networks can have at it, several years ago I stopped watching all television shows except Southpark. If ComedyCentral decided to set some flag so that I couldn't dvr Southpark during the week and watch it the following weekend, I'd just stop watching it and instead rent the season dvd when it finally came out.

Small music venues are being targeted in Chicago; it appears that the city wants to make sure the only live music shows are in large arenas. Who benefits? Let's see. No more opportunities for independent artists to perform. Hmmm, guess the only way to hear live music is to go to a huge arena to see some crappy pop act produced by riaa minions. So are laws like this being proposed in other cities? Is Chicago just the start? Is this the next step in music industry dominance?
