  1. Re:Linux on a Mainframe on Linux On Big Iron · · Score: 1

It should pointed out that there is merely a Unix kernel on the mainframe. It's not as robust as, say, a Sun/Solaris 6.4 setup or anything. Not that there's more or less risk of failure, it's just that the command set isn't there.

Runs fine as a web server, though.

  2. Re:Overkill??? on Linux On Big Iron · · Score: 1

Very true. The mainframe is very robust. When the resources are defined on the hardware management console, they are (or can be) defined as a slice the entire machine. Thus, they share their resources. Unlike a regular server, if they're not using 100 percent of their respective resources (CPU or memory), said resources are available for other partitions to utilize.

While there are likely test partitions on the mainfame as well, the various partitions operate on an 'importance' level too. In other words, if a test partition process spins up to 100 percent CPU and the production partition needs those resources, it will essentially 'starve' the test partition while it takes what it needs...up to a point.

  3. Re:You missed something on Linux On Big Iron · · Score: 1

    Agreed.

The point that the rest of you seem to be missing is that the mainframe will process all of the email...but you still must have an end-user license to actually read it. So you may save (doubt it) money on the server side, but you're still going to lose your shirt on the client side. Depending on the server-side Corporate clients usually get a quantity of clients thrown in to seal the deal.

I have a stock fan on one box, and an Orbit on the second. The orbit is much taller, much higher RPM, moves much more air, and yes, runs much louder.

I'd like to see a Tom's Hardware article on CPU fans, actually, as mine is quite loud...

Guess I'm not as geeky as I thought... Why is a slower fan (lower RPMs) a better fan? My Orbit runs at about 7200RPM and is about 5 degrees F cooler than the same computer without it.

    Can you explain?

If your only aspiration is to be able to wedge your way into a position where you can play games at work, you may be unhappy for some time to come. Shouldn't you be increasing your skills or networking instead?

If he was really a Jedi in relation to his UNIX skills he'd be working on preventing the problems, and not just documenting them.

Instead of playing chess he'd be researching new technologies, or perusing user groups to asses their problems so that they don't happen to his machines. Chess-playing doesn't make him smart, it makes him a shit-bird! In Utopia, he should have a Jedi-in-training to prevent a single point of failure.

Bottom line: If he's using company time to play chess, his position could probably be 'right-sized.'

  14. Re:But only one person needs an ISP on What To Do With Old DSL Modems? · · Score: 4

This is possible. All you need is DSL/Cable/T1 connection to your ISP, two DSL modems (one for you and one for the other guy,) a dry copper line, and a router. Just make sure the other guy isn't TOO far away. I've gone as far as 20,000 feet and gotten decent throughput. My cost breakdown: AT&T cable internet - $47.50 Dry coper line - ~$21 2 DSL modems - free with two cancelled DSL services Multiply the above by the number of people you're willing to share your precious bandwidth with. Linksys router - $78 misc cables and computers not counted With a little configuration elbow-grease, your bandwidth (and internal network, (coughMP3scough) if you are so inclined) is now shared. Easy peasy. Note: With AT&T broadband, I'm not allowed to host a server. I haven't read the agreement closely, but even though I'm not technically acting as a server...I'm sure this isn't allowed.
