I think people are nuts chucking away old PCs - load up the 200M hard drive with 20-30 good games like Kings Quest etc, and it serves as a neat little backup PC. Even better, because its DOS and menu based they cant break it by dragging the Windows folder to the recycle bin.
If you want to be producing Open Source on your spare time for a year or so, what about taking a non coding job for a while - , like sysadmin/database admin/web page maintainance, or something; as long as it isnt coding.BR>
You'll get a lot more development done at night after work if you haven't already spent all day coding for someone else, and the contract *should* be less restricting.
Assign each person to use a different word processor - e.g. Word95, Word97, Word2000, WP5.1, StarOffice, OpenOffice, etc.etc.
This way you will know exactly who maintains the document - store all the files on the users hard drive , dont worry about backups - hard drives are very, very reliable these days and the damn server is usually always on the blink.
If someone needs to modify another document, they simply need to write notes on the old printed version and the document maintainer can update them later.

Basically, this is what shareware is : 'A really good way of advertising' - the users get to see exactly what the program does, if it has bugs, is it crap, etc. so they can try it out before buying it
..that if you can read a message 'just once', then you can keep a copy of it. And if it's a juicy message which the sender thinks will be destroyed in day or so, you can bet that they will keep a copy of it.
If a local brewery supplied the beer all parties could benefit - (especially the developers!)

Another point to consider for home server rooms which are not in a basement, is to run all cables up the wall closest to the center of the house - this gives you maximum room when crawling around the ceiling.
So when you are running new cables, or tracing faults or whatever, you aren't cramped down by the pitch of the roof.
I've done this, and while it is *never* fun stuffing around with cables in a roof space, at least if its in the center of the house you can stand up and stretch.

That's not true - I rang them and they said it was caused by 'SOLAR FLARES'
It's also the number of monitors. It wont ever get completely paperless until the desk surface itself is made of 4 or 6 hi res touch screen monitors.
And they must be run by separate PC(s) so you can reboot, BSOD , whatever without losing the ability to use the information.
