Strange that Escapist is being singled out when the same policy can be found in several other forums. http://diablo.incgamers.com/forums/faq.php?faq=rules is one: You use DIII.Net and its affiliates in the full knowledge that advertising in the form of banner adverts, interstitials and embedded adverts appear on all pages. You agree to not interfere with the display of these adverts through banner blocking software or browser features.
But whatever, I've since learnt to keep it to myself that I'm blocking ads. Sad that there are lots of people out there annoyed by ads and do not know that ads can be easily blocked, but I'm not going to teach them on a public forum that is ad supported. I also keep out of threads where people bitch about the ads on the forum.
I worked in Video production in the late 90's through about 2005. H.264 was a godsend when we finally had a single Codec that was adopted by pretty much all recording hardware and editing software. Before it was a Codec Hell. Nobody I talk to in the industry, and I still have a lot of friends who work everywhere from their basement to large production shops, have any interest in embracing Theora or anything else. They only want to support 1 Codec that works everywhere, and that's H.264. Even if it costs them a little bit of money. Because whatever it costs them is likely cheaper than the headaches of having to support multiple formats.
I worked in GUI applications in the 90's through about 2005. Windows was a godsend when we finally had a single OS that was adopted by pretty much all hardware and software. Before it was an OS Hell. Nobody I talk to in the industry, and I still have a lot of friends who work everywhere from their basement to large production shops, have any interest in embracing Linux or anything else. Wing Commander II was the first game I recall that had some sort of voice acting. Now that I think about it, the voice acting was crap... but back in those days where most PC users were probably still using PC Speaker and do not have Sound Blasters, having voice acting in the first place was consider OMGWTFBBQ awesome.
The Heroes of Newerth binary for Linux is simply an executable.sh file with self-contained compressed binary. When run, it installs the game which runs on any distro and DE, appearing in the menu.
Not sure how it deals with library dependencies though, but it's simple enough to provide scripts for each distro to install the necessary stuff.
Sounds to me like one BOFH that has been using his spare time reading student emails for juicy stuff is not happy that he no longer gets to read 'private' emails of his users.
I get the feeling that there is a greater risk of private emails being read by an administrator than by google.
The KERS cars performed poorly at the start of the season, but started catching up during the middle of the season, with McLaren having the fastest car at the end of the season. The double diffuser controversy also had a big hand in holding back the KERS cars at the start of the season.
They are not trying to stop you from giving money to someone else, but from giving money to someone else without leaving a trace that can be taxed or to be investigated for illegal money laundering.
So subsidizing is basically T-mobile giving you a $350 loan where you pay back $20 per month for 24 months. If I'm not wrong the interest rate on this loan is 32.4% ?
How do you respond to those who say that the Mozilla Foundation should pay for the h.264 license? After all, Google and Apple are obviously paying for the license to distribute Safari and Chrome with h.264 for free, should be easy enough for Mozilla Foundation to do that too, right? Who really cares that Google and Apple are subsidizing the license fee from their main business models while Mozilla is a non-profit organization formed to provide support and leadership to open source projects that is financed only through donations?
"So all they need is MORE DONATIONS. Someone else should make those donations so that *I* can have a free Firefox browser that can play h264 content."
Ideally, HTML5 standards would use an open, patent-free standard for use with video. The point of standards is to allow different systems to communicate effectively, the fact that it is open is a requirement of any standard meant for benefiting users. Right now, Theora is about the only major codec that seems to fit the bill.
Theora is actually based on patented VP3. However, the source code has been BSD'ed and from Wikipedia, "On2 also made an irrevocable, royalty-free license grant for any patent claims it might have over the software and any derivatives, allowing anyone to use any VP3-derived codec for any purpose."
..and strangely enough, their capability of hearing "better imaging, depth and transparency at higher sample rates" disappear the moment they attempt an ABX Text.
Oh shit... Slashdot doesn't really count as a public forum that is ad supported, does it?

Maybe it's time Youtube is boycotted and everyone switches over to Daily Motion, which has been supporting Theora for several months already:

Boycott probably not going to happen though :(

I thought they made up for it well in EOB2, the ending was awesome (for a game back then)
