Before you write, read. Read the whole discuss paper. The paper covers many different areas not covered in the news article. Some parts, such as the intercept proposals, aren't acceptable. Other parts of the paper make a lot of sense.

For example read the section on Interception of Email. The gist of this section is that email interception can and has fallen under two conflicting sections of the Criminal Code. In some cases a judge ruled that the email was a private communication and subject to those laws. In another case a judge ruled that email was subject to the less onerous search and seizure laws. The criminal code is not clear on the matter. So the discussion paper simply asks 3 questions:

    * should there be a specific provision in the Criminal Code in relation to how an e-mail should be acquired?

    * if such a provision should be included, what kind of procedural safeguards should be imposed?

    * should the type of order to be obtained in order to acquire an e-mail vary depending on the stage of the communication or delivery process?

These are three important questions! How do you want your email protected under the Criminal Code and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms? The Dept of Justice is asking for your inpupt on these and other important questions regarding your privacy.

Read the whole paper and send send in your opinions. You do not need to comment on all sections. Specify which section your comments reference. Be clear. Check your spelling (unlike me). Check your grammar. Reread what your wrote. Wait a day after writeing before sending (from some sober second thought).

This draft is not in conflict with section 8 of the Charter. Read the actual "discussion draft" and you will see that the proposal states:
The central tenet of the proposal is that service providers would be required to have the technical capability to provide access to the entirety of a specific telecommunication transmitted over their facilities, subject to a lawful authority to intercept. This would include the content and the telecommunications-associated specific data associated with that telecommunication.
    draft

Note "subject to a lawful authority to intercept." This indicates that a court order would be required prior to the interception and collection of any data as per The Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

I believe that your arguement under para 2.b is probably valid.

At any rate this draft will not become law. It won't even make it to a draft bill. Canadians won't stomach it. Ask anyone who does tech support and they will tell you that they often recieve calls from older men (and teenaged boys) asking how to clear the Netscape URL drop down menu before the wife (or parents) get home. These same people would rather believe that it is harder to intercept their surfing habits, and that there isn't infrastucture in place to be used at a moments notice.

Also, why is it necesary to copy MS's combination of email, group messaging, and calendaring in a single app?

You probably want atleast the email and calendaring closely coupled if not the same app. If I arrange a meeting an email is sent to all those invited. Those reading the email are given the option of accepting or rejecting the meeting. If accepted the meeting is automagically added to the readers calendar. I have used a couple of different calendaring systems. Those systems that work and are actually used have email and calendaring somehow integrated. Complete systems like this only make sense in an office type environment. Until you have worked in such an environment it is hard to understand why exchange is so popular.

    <aside>
There is often talk of the next killer-app. Email is the basic killer-app of the Internet. Usenet and instant messageing are extentions of email. Calendaring *was* the next killer-app but no one noticed. I don't even think MS understands what makes exchange so popular. If MS is smart the next app they will included in Exchange is a proper multi-author versioning system similar to their current version system (SourceSafe??). That too will be killer. None of this is even close to new. A system like this already exists on IBM big iron. I understand that Lotus Notes does this as well. These are all bussiness killer apps. If you want to really replace Exchange you need all of this. Add an LDAP contact sheet, and input forms and you will have some killer software. The pieces are all there, it just needs a group of dedicated coders to put it all together.

UofT is an excellent school. But for engineering all Canadian schools (that offer engineering, 40+) are good. Due to the strict accreditation standards, from a high level all the schools are very similar. And believe it or not are right up there with the best from the USA. There is a big "however." Each school does somethings better: have different programs, better teachers/funding for field X, etc. Personally I prefer the smaller class size you will find at the smaller Unis. My graduateing year had 300 students across all fields.

For those considering Engineering in Canada, do not get too hung up on which school is best for you. It is good to find a school that you will like, but not worth stressing over. In the end, regardless of where you go, the best the profs can hope to achieve is to expose you to enough topics that you will know enough to find and read the correct book. All the Canadian schools achieve this goal.

There was more to the test then just test driving. The vendor worked with us to find the appropriate system. At the time it came down to dual Pents, or dual Xeons, a gig of ram, and a big disk. A SCSI system was tested as was an IDE. The IDE drive won, as disk space was an issue, not disk speed. I believe a gig of ram was the best you could get at the time without going into really big bucks. The only real question was if the Xeon was going to be fast enough to make a difference and justify the cost.

As with anything that takes dedication to do well the other kids are all going to be pretty clean cut as they don't have time between pratices to get into real trouble. We still got into trouble, but it was all minor nuisance stuff :-)

On a more serious note travelling away from home can be an excellent opportunity to learn some real life skills. As a group, those of us who toured around tended to be more mature, self reliant or independant, and more out going then our peers. I think encourageing your son to sit in the hotel room and play video games is just wrong. Instead this kid should be encouraged to get out of the hotel room to see the town and meet his fencing peers.

Believe it or not I have done this with 3D MAX. I was assisting a 3D MAX user purchase a workstation. We walked into a reasonably large shop told them he had 3k to burn and asked them what systems they had that we could easily setup to test. The first 2 shops said "no." The third was smarter and he bought a dual Xeon with gobs of ram, and a rediculous 21" monitor. (I suspect that the final bill, which I did not handle, was more than the 3k.) More importantly this shop bought repeat bussiness.

The trick is there was no "might buy." This guy was buying a system from the shop that was going to let him run some tests. It helped that the shop had a rackmount Xeon system that they were getting ready to deliver to another customer. But if they didn't we were willing to wait until they had some stuff worth testing. It was worth the shops time to install winnt, 3D MAX, and load the big models. The only caveat is that most shops won't have top of the line sitting around. Instead you have to test on the best they have and extrapolate. In your case a single test on an Athlon probably would have shown that it was top dog. Remeber that you already had a dual pent to test on.

This dosen't help you now, but next time you need a workstation consider making the sale conditional on a few tests. If you are buying a high end system you are a customer the vendor should want to work with. It is cliche: make the vendor work for the sale.
