They are probable horrified because if all the kids grow up on linux they will prefer linux in the future.
Then they should've been making deals with schools AGES ago like Apple did (and is still doing). My Son is in 3rd grade this year. He uses OS-X at school (Power Books, Mac Books, I'm not sure - which ever the basic White ones are; I just know they are all OS-X) and teachers use iMacs (the newer flat-panels and there are some of the older CRT ones the IT staff crow-bared OS-X on to). My Son barely ever uses Windows. At home, the machines are Linux. My Son has gotten quite good at using KDE's features. On the rare occasion he uses a Windows machine (XP), he spends half the time fighting with it do stuff the other OSs Just Do(tm).
not all open source is derived from hobby work ya know
Perhaps, but you're missing his point. Here's another example:
Wake up around 6 am. Eat, get dressed, and get physched up for the fun fun hour plus drive via major congested roads to get to work by 9am. That pre-leave time also includes helping get my Son ready for School (breakfast, persistant reminders that he's running late, etc.).
Work 'till 5pm (usually closer to 6 pm).
Fun fun hour plus drive home. Home around 7 pm.
Eat dinner, help Son with homework, spend a bit of time with him before his bed time.
Spend sometime with Wife and un-wind a bit (and "un-wind", if you catch my drift...)
Shower, go over meeting notes, maybe catch the the earlier late news).
10pm Head to bed.
Where in there am I supposed to find time to sit in front of my machine spending hours debugging code for an OSS project? I'm not saying that I don't contribute, once in a while I have sometime on weekends to submit a bug report (with some same code usually - but not always), or something small like that, but by far and large, us "older" (I'm only 34, but...), "Family Guys" simply don't have the time the younger people (in High School or College) do.
I have "Nested" selected in my user prefs, but with this system the comments are all collapsed and I don't see a "Expand All" (or similar) type button on the comments page, nor in my user prefs (for this new comments format).
Am I missing something, or should I just stick with the "1.0" version of the comments page since "All Expanded - Nested" is the way I prefer for the comments page to load.
Personally, I prefer Kadabra or Alakazam. Well, unless I'm going up against a Ghost type... or was it Dark type? Geesh, I forget. I'll have to ask my Son again. I really ought to stop playing his GBA games...

I notice that RTC Wolfenstein, and Medal of Honor Allied Assault both run better in Linux under Cedega
You are aware that there's a Linux binary for most of (if not all) id's games, right?
But, yes, it runs a hell of a lot better on Linux than I've ever gotten Windows to run it (not that that I tried very hard on Windows, but...).
I use Cedega for Jedi Academy. THAT runs much better on Linux/Cedega than on Windows (which is one title I tried to get to run OK-enough-for-game-play on Windows and never could).
I am full aware that your comment was not directed at the FORMAT of the CD, but at the moron that decided to chop up the music to put it on that format.
I was only commenting on the time missing can in now way be what you are claiming it is. The CDs are missing AT MOST 20 minutes, no where near the hour you claim.
WinDOS: The nature of Microsoft engineering still resides within XP.
Just a note to you, you should change your.sig for Vista. I ran into a situation a few weeks ago with a Vista machine that the only way I could figure out how to make it do what I wanted seemed to require that I do with cmd.
I was trying to get some guy's laptop connected to the local library's Internet connection (me being the nice computer geek that I am, I'll help people in need form time to time). Of course my machine was fine (Linux...). I couldn't for the life of me get the GUI tools to connected to the network (no matter how many damn times I told it that I was 100% sure that I wanted to connect to an un-WEP'ed LAN...). I gave up and:
It was then 100% fine. No BS questions or anyting from the GUI (which I was a bit surprised at). Anyway, DOS is alive and well and still an important part of managing a Windows machine, it seems.
can I have their asses thrown in jail for trespassing?
I don't see why not. It may be kinda hard to prove exactly who to throw in jail, though. I doubt these Canuks will be be taking pictures of themselves taking pics of your house. Then there's all the extradition hassle...
You make many good points. You're right, though. I'm not Joe Six-Pack (sometimes I do forget that...) and know how to properly maintain a few different OSes for myself and for others. The point of yours I like best is:
You think Linux won't eat itself alive if treated the way most people treat Windows?
Yea, you are 100% right. Most distros default to running as root just as Windows defaults to running as an Admin User (or Administrator itself, depending on which flavor of Win you use). But your point still stands, and I agree with it, any OS without proper care and easily be hosed. I was just saying that Windows will do it to itself when I've not had a *NIX box do it. But, aside, great posting. I think you said it better than I could've.
Because they like it. It's stable, friendly, and well supported from both the vendor and third-party software point of view.
...And well supported by people like me (us IT folks), you forgot to mention. I've yet again had to do a "Standard Windows Cleanup" this past week. My GF'S Dad's XP machine was under the weather (again). He's teh Average, Joe Six-Pack (l)user. Multiple versions of AOL installed (and couldn't uninstall a single one of them), Anti-Virus Defs about a year old, etc.
OK, most of the problems with it could've been fixed or prevented by properly updating the machine over time, but, Windows will happily eat itself alive if it's not properly taken care of. This is something that the target audience you reference has no idea how to do, or that there is even a need to. It's people like Us (tm) that know these things.
I personally find it much more work to keep a Win box running smooth and secure then I've ever had with my *NIX boxes.

Sorry for the ugly formatting, but you get the idea. Only 256M RAM and the same size swap and I'm not touching swap. I have OOo-calc running, and fairly large compile going, and a few other minor things and that's my stats.
If consumers continue to purchase ever more power hungry graphics cards, what is to stop the companies from making them?
And what choice do we currently have? If the companies made Watt-Friendly cards, I'm willing to bet people would buy them especially for laptops. But they don't. We don't have the choice BUT to buy these double bay, amp eating, juggernauts we have today.

How is QT *not* free?
THey just finished saying that their code is running on several platforms (for non comercial use) for free.
Gnome was created in response to the Qt licensing, no?
Indeed, I do think you are correct (I'm a KDE fan of a LONG time, but that was still my understanding).
Perhaps it was the GNOME guys who wanted to play a little naming fun with the Trolltech guys.
Again, I second you. It's a silly thought, but it does make a BIT of sense...

That was all I was saying.
A CD holds 80 minutes of music. An LP holds about 43 minutes per side (we'll round up to 45 mins):
CD: 80x2=160 minutes
LP:(45x2)x2=180 minutes
Time difference: 20 minutes in favor of 2 LPs
Where is this hour that your saying is missing?
I'm not saying that I haven't been screwed like that with LP --> CD releases, but what you're saying is impossible.
Just a note to you, you should change your

You're suggesting that for Nintendo to be the "winner", it should need to out-compete itself?
And doing my taxes to stay out of jail doesn't require giving 40 bucks to Intuit.
Not if I have to drop that $40 to find out that I'm only getting $100 or so back.

I just have to quick say that:
You are f'ing brilliant. Everything you said is spot on. There is no one that could've said it better.
Thank you for bringing a bit a reality to this conversation.
