Yeah, it reminds me about what happened to Sega in the home console market. They were "firsts" in a variety of changes, like the 32-bit add-on for genesis, the sega "CD", which was 32 bit, and the "dreamcast" that had the first console networking capabilities (at, ahem, modem speed). Soon after the competitors learned what worked and what didnt, and innovated around them. Sometimes being first in a new technology isnt better.

Rubbish law. When you log into a network, so long as you're not hacking it, you politely ask the router "may i use this network and have an IP address?". The router says "yes", on behalf of you, the owner. Therefore it is authorized.

Its NOT the same as leaving your front door open in your house, or your car unlocked.

It IS the same as leaving your front door open in your house, having a visitor stop at the door and ask "may I come in?" and you replying "yes". You can't then turn around and sue for trespassing.

The heart of D&D has always been flexibility to adapt. updaing the rules ad-nauseum doesn't bring the original theme back. In fact it dilutes the game.

We as a species, if we are having no impact on the planet, should be able to detect NOTHING out of the ordinary during the hundred or so years for which measurements are available.

The planet is slow. Things change slowly, over time. Trends and cycles occur over long periods. Nothing happens in 20 years in absence of a particular catalyst. (Catalyst = something that makes it happen faster)

  17. Re:Internal Inconsistency in his Argument on Hiring Programmers and The High Cost of Low Quality · · Score: 1

I agree. I think the best way to think about is with a term called Value Added. 1 lousy programmer produces a produced of low Value Added. 1 uber programmer produces a high Value Added product, where:

Value Added = price buyers are willing to pay for your product less cost to produce it. (It's not the same as margin)

Anywho, 10 lousy programmers will still produce the same product, or one 10x as large, or perhaps the same product in half the time (no, not 1/10 the time as we all know), and the cost to produce of course it goes up.

The value added actually _decreases_, however, because the price customers are willing to pay for it remains the same.

Now fire a lousy programmer and add an uber programmer to the mix, and that person can solve the hard problems the lousy one's cant, and even make the lousy one's more productive as you mentioned. Therefore the price premium of the product increases, and the value added increases. This will lead to higher profits, assuming the rest of the organization is positioned well.

Therefore it makes very good business sense to find the uber programmers and pay them more than enough to stay. (yes i'm an MBA, with computer science undergrad).
