Change the labor laws to demand all employers offer flexible hours and/or telecommuting to their employees if feasible, smoothing out peak demand on the roads and taking cars off the highways, increasing employee productivity on and off the job, lessening our dependence on oil, saving a lot of time commuting, and generally making people more happy.

Wow! A simple law change can do all that? You bet.

Why should only workers have to sacrifice to be part of the solution? Everyone, especially corporations and their backwards 9-5 schedules, needs to adapt.

Why should joe shmoe, the majority of internet users, whose internet usage is limited to email and occasional airline tickets, pay the same amount as the guy who has P2Ps running 24/7. As a company, you DONT want the p2p jerk, because he's eating into your profits. you DO want joe schmoe, and now you can afford to give joe shmoe a fat discount by overcharging the p2p jerk. You can then sell at a price discount to a larger number of subscribers and not have to worry about infrastructure. "normal" internet users win. Those who are abusing their connections lose. I konw this concept of "conservation" doesnt seem to register in the data world, but there are real costs involved in data transmission.

This is absurd and ridiculous. I could pull one out of my butt tomorrow and it would be better than the crap the government uses. Still no web voting? ABSURD!!

We should be outraged at our incompetent government and start writing hate mail, etc. The foundation of any democracy is a fair election.

Good point. I think this fundamentally is another text-book case of a natural monopoly.

The wire is a monopoly, that is, as it should be. The content provider is an example of almost perfect competition (just like the internet). But what is needed is the government to step in to provide such regulation to decouple the wire from the content.

  12. Re:Article suggests unrealistic alternative on Why Everyone Should Hate Cellphone Carriers · · Score: 1

Capitalism doesn't always produce best-of-class services at lowest possible cost. One reason (among many) is that there is a such thing as a 'natural monopoly' in economics theory. This occures whenever long-run average cost decreases as company size increases. You can think of a lot of reasons for this.

For example, is it cheaper for one bloated company to go set up phone lines in a large area, or a bunch of little companies to attempt the same thing? If the market has 100 little 'phone' companies, one will eventually acquire the next becuase it makes economic sense, and you will end up with a monopoly.

Same reasoning for internet connections and cell phone towers. These are all natural monopolies. You don't really want to break up the natural monopoly, because in terms of economics it is most effecient. You do however have to regulate it, or it will set monopoly pricing and exploit the market, producing dead-weight losses.

So don't complain about certain services being a monopoly, complain that they're not fairly-regulated. The government needs to hire more economists.

Because you're extroverted, you're assuming everyone is, or everyone should want to be. Lets face it, there's a huge taboo in (US) society against being introverted. Society has programmed you and me to believe there's something wrong with introverts. But the reality is its perfectly normal for people to have this trait and behave this way. There's a difference between being introverted and antisocial. I'm not going to go into the details, but I encourage you to figure out the difference because your sterotypes are what makes life more difficult for people like me.

An introvert is social too - but picks his moments. He would much rather choose when to be social than have it shoved in his face every day. That said, technology inst making "a large part of society anti-social". It's simply allowing the introverts to behave in a way that is very natural for them.
