Runescape is run by a small group while blizzard is a rather large one with deep pockets and an army of developers and graphics designers. Obviously bliz games will have nicer graphics and whatever. But the point is, a java-based game can still not only survive, but thrive. 200,000 concurrent players means probablly well over a million active players. That's nothing to poo-poo on. I call that success.
While its true that life on earth can exist in extreme enviornments, it probablly couldnt _start_ in those extreme enviornments. It's more likely to have evolved to live there. Biologists feel free to correct me, but high temp's break up amino acid chains as do a host of common compounds such as oxygen.
From what we know about carbon-based life (us), there are particular conditions which must be available for biological compounds to start forming and interacting. High temps and some common agents are deterimental to this process, so yes, it is extremely unlikely that carbon-based life can get started in such an enviornment.
So my arguement is while it can evolve to survive there, it probablly cant start there. Life finds a way only after there is life.
That's funny...it seems the folks at runescape (www.runescape.com) have had plenty of success with their JAVA 3D game. They seem like a pretty big boy to me.
Runescape: "There are currently 208580 people playing!"
I still wonder about the psycology of people who choose to write viruses. These people are writing programs to intentionally damage peoples lives. I wonder if they actually understand the consequences of what they're doing? (not law-based consequences, but the fact that they're hurting innocent people). Do they not care? Or is it the same cry for attention and help that other people (non virus-writers) express in different ways. Why is china in the lead? perhaps these people are unhappy with their lives and express it in this way? any psycologist care to comment?
If medical care were socialized, there'd be less of a lure to develop so many "useless" medicines, and more of a lure to develop live saving medicine Sorry, you're wrong. (parts of) Europe and canada have socialized medicine, and they're still not researching the TB vaccine. It's not an incentive to develop so-called "life-saving" medicines that are only useful in 3rd world (translated: non-paying) countries.
Socialised medicine also effectively kills incentive to develop new medicine in general, because the payout for doing such work is not worth the cost and risk.
Why do you think the vast majority of pharma's operate in the US, and ALL OF THEM consider the US an absolutely critical market. I work in the industry, fyi.
I'm by no means an advocate for the US system of medicine, but it does provide one hell of an incentive for drug companies to innovate...but only for those who are paying.
Makes me wonder how this data compare to other studies which show the youngest son is also more likely to be gay. Does that mean that statistically gays should have a lower IQ?
OK - fine. What about building the model with historical data, but testing it with *different* (and possibly randomly chosen) historical data (different wars used to build it). Wouldnt that be the same thing as waiting around 20 years for wars to start?
It's funny how we're conditioned in this country (US) to always blame diplomatic fuck-ups on the Americans..as if the "other side" is well-intentioned and never made any mistakes.
This could make refrigerators very effecient. Collect waste 'heat' from the refrigerators heat sinks and pump the power back into the machine to power it...or something like that.:)
"Working in IT] is a place where I can get control that a child from a dysfunctional family wants," a 49 year-old IT operations architect, who had a traumatic childhood said. "I can make order. I can put those damn cards in the right order. I can get the syntax perfect. I can run it and have it compile cleanly. There are all of these tidiness control things that are so beautiful about programming and a computer program will not betray you. It does the same damn thing every time"
ummm..wow.. she has some issues. Should i also work in IT also because i have paranoia problems?
"[Working in IT] i can use write programs instead of dealing with people. People are out to harm me. Except sometimes my program doesnt work. Even though my damn code is right. I know it is. I wrote it. But it still doesnt work. Its the COMPUTER. It's trying to cheat me. Its trying to get me fired. But i wont let it. Its going to work this time. HEY!! Stop looking at me like that!! The computer is LOOKING at me! I need more coffee. Did someone poison the coffee? I better make a new batch just in case. But i cant let my computer go unsupervised so i'll shut it down and unplug it. Take THAT, vile machine. What's that SOUND?!? Oh its' just me. Oops did i say that out loud? STOP LOOKIGN AT ME!!11!1"
I'm not so confident our government will do the right thing in time. Officials in denial are the same people that are saying "Let Intilligent design be taught along with Evolution in classrooms." What's more sadly amazing is the % of people who believe that garbage.
Given unilimited time, sure, we will come to realize the error of our ways. (only 50 years for the slavery issue. Only 100 more for gay rights.)
But this time around, we dont have 50 or 100 years to decide.
The difference, if that ever happens, is that firefox will allow you to turn it off. Your ISP overlord has known about your web habits for years already.
Yeah, well lately im afraid of my TV. I have 3 remotes, i have no idea what they all do. My room mate set it up. I cant get a tivo recording to work. There is no user guide or manual, no help files, no clippy:( So i just dont really watch TV anymore and go play Internet. I guess it works both ways now.
I have a prius, only had it for 2 months. I used to drive a nissan sentra which was fairly zippy. I find that i'm less aggressive now that i have an MPG display. I start to cringe and ease off the acceleration when it drops below 30. it has a funny psycological effect. It also means i'm a less aggressive driver. I dont tailgate anymore, because extra lead time = more energy regenerated while breaking.
I wonder if we will see a pattern of people who have MPG displays getting into fewer accidents because they drive less aggressively? I want an insurance discount.
I agree with you. If such a person walked up to a female and said the exact same words, she could have him arrested for harrasment and press charges. being online should be no protection. People think they can get away with things simply due to the anonymous nature of the Internet. It lets the real (often ugly) character of people come through.
An online conversation is the same thing as a real life conversation. The person ought to be liable for any damages if they threaten or abuse someone, just as if they said it in person. Rape of course is stretching it. But im sick of people with the mindset "Hey, its online! therefore doing evil is not only to be expected, but its OK!". It's not anymore OK than it would be in real life, since evil acts online cause real human emotional damage.
do you think people are running out to buy a hybrid, when right now the best technology we can implement for the batteries only suggest a life of 3 years and the battery is the majority of the value of the car Then toyota must love losing money, because my Prius comes with a 10 year battery warranty.
It seems to me that evolution doesnt necessarily have to take place. (and yes there wasent enough time for this to occur)
But if you simply let genetic variation and natural selection run its course, you get the same result. Here's my thinking: Those in the north with lighter skin had an advantage due to higher abilities to produce vitamin D and ward off cancers and other deficiency-related illnesses. Those in the equator with dark skin had an advantage due to natural proection from sunlight overexposure.
You cannot compare renting a home to subscribing to a music service. It just makes no sense whatsoever. Sure you can. It's totally fine. It's like comparing you to a bannana, which ill do now:
You're a little smarter than a bannana, but the bannana tastes better, and it can be used in a sundae, whereas you're quite useless...
And why the hell is this called a "defensive plasma shield." There is nothing defensive about it. its used to attack something and it's certainly not a shield. wtf? "plasma disruptor cannon" sounds cooler anyway.
Point taken as far as the money spent to fight this war could have been used to make significant progress to cure cancer and probablly even get all the homeless off the street if we wanted to. (or whatever other noteworthy cause you want to use the money for) Its a sad waste of resources indeed.
As far as orphan drugs, perhaps the best policy is for the feds to create a larger incentive for their development, such as significantly reduced clinical trail requirements, (even moreso than they are now), or longer patent life. (I know, slashdot heresy...:)

Look everyone, we have one exception to the statistic. Therefore the statistic must be crap!
Yes im sure in Vista, all ports are closed, as per their fabulous security model.
"Program Internet Explorer wants to open a port, cancel or allow?"
user: "WTF is a port?"
We'll also going to have our grandkids asking what a steering wheel was...because all the cars will drive themselves. =)

Oww! Dont say funny stuff while my mouth is full of coffee!
nonono.. the government already thought of this. american kids are 2.0 sized. Therefore your 1.5 kids translates into 3 full kids.

No evolution required!
