You must be thinking of computer software. I hear this over and over again and it's becoming something of a pet peeve. There is no licensing involved and no license law when you buy a music CD! None!
Do a search of google for "betamax myth" (without the quotes).
quote:
3) "Betamax failed in spite of the fact that it was a superior technology."
False. Comparisons between VCRs with similar features showed no significant differences in performance. In fact, most of the differences could only be seen with sensitive instruments, and likely would never show up on most consumer grade television sets. . In particular, the qualitative differences between the two formats were less than the differences between any two samples from the same manufacturer. It was only the later (and more expensive) versions of Beta which noticeably improved the quality, as commercial and broadcast outlets turned to Beta as a standard. In fact, at that time Beta was an inferior technology because VHS allowed for longer recordings. Early beta technology allowed for one-hour recordings, while VHS allowed two hours.
I once had a 5.25" floppy game which I believe was originally shipped with PC Magazine (or something like that) in the middle of the 80's or so. The purpose of the game was to BE the "whiz kid" Bill Gates! It was all in text mode but with colorful rectangles and menus or something, and you had to make the right decisions to make the business a success! Unfortunately I probably formatted the disk, if I even have it anymore.

In former times, there was proprietary software, for proprietary systems. Now there is a Free (speech) system [Linux], and you can use any distribution of Linux, and you can compile, configure, install any Free (Open Source) software that you can manage to port to your distribution. If you are in charge of a distribution you can make the proper package, or else if you are not, then you can contribute that package. At the very least you can make it work. But then a new thing comes up, proprietary software running on Linux. There can be no Freedom with proprietary software because you are no longer free to modify your distribution (or more likely, use a modified distribution). So long as you are required to use a defacto standard to use proprietary software, you really aren't any better off than using Windows, in the long run.
Are you sure it uses DRI? My understanding was that they were not going to support that. Does having 4.0 drivers mean that you have DRI? I did notice that they worked with VA Linux Systems and SGI on the drivers so maybe they are DRI after all.
Incidentally, I would prefer that their drivers were Free Software. I also noticed on their home page it says that they just receive $200 Million from Microsoft.
What they (but not ESR) are saying, is that laws such as DMCA and UCITA are threats to Open-Source, therefore it is a good idea for us to get involved in the discussion what what kinds of laws (including regulation/purchasing policies/funding). All one has to say is that the government should have no role, and then ignore the government, meanwhile MPAA and others like them have their lobbyists on the Hill.

Since you asked...
I'll probably still be a fan of their music when this all blows over, but for now, I can't listen to "And Justice For All" when the lyrics remind me of Metallica's hypocracy.
Take a look at the cover. You see that money tipping the scales of justice. Well that is Metallica's money. On the other side is the students who lost their access to Napster, and possibly some of their freedom, without even going to trial... just the threat of 10 million dollars in damages.
As much as I'd hate to admit it, Metallica sells a product... a product I enjoy, which is something I can listen to and get stirred up about society and all that BS. At least that is what they used to be, in the 80's I suppose. Be being so completely uncool, it retroactively subtracts from their music, making it a mockery. A mockery of me for buying into it.
The music still kicks ass but music is also about how it makes you feel.
(hacked lyrics, just the relevant stuff) Halls of justice painted green Hammer of justice crushes you Overpower The ultimate in vanity Exploiting their supremacy Seeking no truth Winning is all Rolls of red tape seal your lips Their money tips her scales again Make your deal Just what is truth? i cannot tell Cannot feel
Ok, looks like I'm going to have to spell it out for the majority of posters.
It's a stunt. No this is not set up so that Metallica "can get the money they deserve" or anything like that.
Paying here does not legally give you any rights (besides fair use) to copy their music. At the same time, it is not an admission of guilt.
Read the fine print, and follow the other links on the site. The Point(TM) is that it is so easy to download music and make online payments, yet the industry has not set up any way for people to legitimately download and pay for music. By setting up this site, he is trying to prove that any moron can set up a payment system for music.
At the same time, with its juxtoposition of Credit Cards and Lars' quotes, it really drives home the irony that (as someone else has metioned), if it is traded freely it's "a commodity" but if you pay for it then it's "art."
I bet none of the people who are quoted in the book have any problem with it. Unless you are one of the people quoted in the book and you have a problem with it, it doesn't really matter what you think, now does it?

Decades ago the hollywood studios were forced to sell their theaters. (For example here in Seattle there is an old "Paramount Theater".) Since the people who made the movies and the people who owned the theaters were the same people... well you get the idea. Now if movies can only be watched on authorized viewers, isn't that pretty much the same situation?
Every time I see this kind of thread, I try to tell people something, but no one seems to listen. So let's try this again: THERE IS AN OPEN SOURCE DVD PLAYER THAT IT LEGAL TO USE
Look a little closer:
"Due to the DVD standards being foolishly secret, this is not a full featured DVD player: you will not get any of the fancy interactive features, but you will be able to play the movies back."
Let me tell you why nobody listens (besides the fact that it is for dxr2 only). We want a DVD player that is Free in every sense of the word. I can already play DVDs in Windows.
The key word here is "offer." If you so desire, you can get the "Ready To Run" version of VMWare with an image of the version of Windows of your choice, for a price.
Sounds good to me. Then you don't have to make a boot floppy, FDISK and format your imaginary partition, sit through the installation which goes even slower than normal since it's running in VMware... And it gives me a good reason to get a completely legitimate windows license.:)
Are you kidding me? In HPUX you can only have the permissions of a single group at any given moment, and you have to issue a command to change which group's permissions you will take on. Most of the commands are less developed as well. For instance, tar doesn't understand tar.gz files. This applies to 10.20 which is still in common use.

With the NPL you can't make any derived work that doesn't give special privilege to Netscape, whereas you can make regular GPL modified software.

The answers to your questions can be found here. It is a chapter written by Bruce Perens from the book "Open Sources".
