  1. I have had this happen to me. on Slashdot Asks: Have You Experienced Ageism? (observer.com) · · Score: 1

Several years ago I had this experience.

At the end of the second interview I was asked the question how did I feel about having a younger person as my boss, the idea that I might have any issue with that had never even occurred to me and I said there was no issue.

I didn't get the job, the boss who was an Asian female in her (I'd guess) early thirties was the only one with an issue, my guess is its a cultural thing.

Now days I run a team of folks of various ages, my boss is younger than me though, not by that much mind you.

    As usual YMMV

I tend to agree, the arbitrage scenario would require you to be able to have a private network to detect the price variation between the markets and do the trading, while you are doing that you'd have to change everyone else's feeds latency.
I'd suggest that existing market surveillance would almost certainly catch this, whether it was classified as market manipulation would depend on the regulator but if they could show you'd tried to manipulate the latency of other peoples feeds I wouldn't want to be in your shoes.

Worked for start ups, worked for companies that have been taken over by large companies, call me crazy but the larger the organisation the worse it gets, I read somewhere they compared multinational corporations to vampires, they take over smaller organisations for their fresh blood, they like vampires couldn't live without it.

There are sure to have been many projects between 1 & 2.

Finding information on the rest of the above is left as an exercise for the reader ;-)

As long as there has been transportation sytems there have been military applications.

The Soviets developed a system like this in the 1970s for the SS-18 ICBM, it used compressed nitrogen to fire the missile out of the silo. The system was known as the "cold launch" technique.

There is a little about it (and the missile) here and here

The US MX (Peacekeeper) missile was also designed to be cold launched. You can read about that here

  8. T'was 1996 on The Worst Development Job You've Ever Had? · · Score: 1

Worst job I ever had was working on a control system in '96. I needed a job as I'd been out of work for a couple of months and the money was getting low.

Having an R&D team you are working on axed in december is about the worst think that can happen, nobody hires in Jan or Feb.

The thing was a project started in '89 and was meant to be deployed by late '92. I joined the project in march '96.

It was a couple of million lines of C written by people without a clue, be bug tracking system died in july when it ran out of numbers to assign to bugs.

The requirements were a disaster, the design was at the level of the code, the code was rubbish and could never have been reviewed and the customer was very very upset (rightly so).

Management wasn't listening, I honestly think they were hoping the customer would back out first.

You can guess what morale was like.

Oh and they paid a pittance.

In the end (mid '97) the project was canned, ~$50M down the drain.

I Read "Death March" by Yourdon afterwards and he was talking about this project.

Its just a way of saying "This is our standard box".

For much of human history the church (insert local flavour here) has been in control and in many places they had edicts that no building could be taller than the local church, mosque, temple etc. So the hight of the spire becomes a serious issue.

  12. Re:Let's make a deal on Getting Back Into Shape While At The Office? · · Score: 1
A couple of things from my experience.

I'm a software guy so I sit in front of one of these stupid machines most of my working day.

When I was in my early 20s I was thin, could eat and drink all I wanted to and never got fat, sure I didn't have a car for a few years and walked everywhere but it wasn't a hell of a lot of exercise. In my late 20's I put on weight, sure I bought a car and didn't walk as much but my metabolism slowed down. Its a common problem, most guys I know gained weight in their late 20s/ early 30s.

A few years ago I decided that I needed to get back in shape, I started by going for a walk each evening after work, walk for about an hour, not only is it exercise but it gives you time to think. I also started going for a walk 15-20 minutes at lunchtime.

After about a year I started going to a gym, been doing that 3 or 4 times a week since then, it is like the walking, you can unwind from the day and think while you work out. I also walk to and from the gym.

The other important thing I did was make sure I live about 10-15 minutes walk from the shops, that means I walk rather than taking the car and since you can only carry so much you have to do that most days.

So if you make it easier to do some exercise than taking the car when doing little things thats a start, I also found that after I'd been exercising for a while I had more energy and wanted to excerise more.

I'm now down to ~80kg from ~100kg, had to buy new (smaller) clothes but thats ok :-).

For a comparison of the Shuttle & Buran you could do worse than have a look at http://www.astronautix.com/craft/buran.htm Lots of interesting stuff there including a table comparing the two, from that table it looks like the Buran is Lighter than the Shuttle, so I guess the US Jets that suck rocks might just be acceptable in this case :-)
Anyway the astronautix website is a great resource its worth checking out.

I wonder How they got the Buran To Sydney for the display a few years back, the website there is closed http://www.buran.com.au which is a pity, it had some good info.
