      Document, document document - as in keep track of all communications and don't do any of it verbally.

    Sorry, but this is a real pet peeve of mine - "oral" is the word that means "by mouth". "verbal" means "using words" (as opposed to, say, pictograms) - could be either spoken or written.

      Compared to life in prison, death is not a punishment. That's not the purpose of the death penalty. The purpose is to remove dangerous members of society from the population.

    Locking a person up for life achieves the same purpose, and, unlike the death penalty, it is reversible. Do you really trust the government to never wrongfully execute someone? What if you were that someone?

      Take one HD channel to transmit scaled down versions of all available channels for some given area. Keep one tuner constantly on this channel. When switching, briefly show the scaled down version while the main tuner switches over.

    Hey, maybe you could also use that channel as a video channel guide - simultaneously see all available channels, tiled onto one screen in low-res, then pick the one you want...

      There are pluses and minuses to every OS.

    Each user has to decide what is right for his or herself.


    That's a copout. No OS gets everything just right, but certainly some OSes are better able to meet the needs of a larger amount of people than other OSes are, and in those terms, those OSes can be said to be more successful. The question is: which one? Does Vista satisfy more of the people, more of the time, than Ubuntu (or insert your favorite Linux here)?

      if india wants the freaking jobs, they should start their own companies and create their own job market rather than destroying the american job market.

    That's exactly what they've done. The companies have names like Wipro, Infosys, Tata, and Satyam. They are Indian companies, employing Indian people, in India. What's the problem?

      Find a better reason (there are plenty) not to support linux, or shut up.

    Now that's the kind of talk that gives us Linux newbies such a warm, fuzzy feeling - the friendly and helpful attitudes we get from experienced Linux folks. Makes me wanna run home right now and install - uh, Ubuntu? Kubuntu? Xubuntu? Fedora? Mandriva? Novell? KDE? GNOME? Xfce? Beryl? Apt-get? Yum? RPM? Xfree86? X.org? How the hell is someone who doesn't want to devote his entire life to Linux, ever supposed to know what is the best configuration to be running? If I install Ubuntu, how do I know I didn't make a mistake by not installing Fedora? Or similarly with KDE vs. GNOME? And where is anyone supposed to learn all this, except from snobbish jerks who ket their kicks making fun of people who know less than they do?

      It always seemed strange to me that one of the most oil rich nations in the world would want to develop civilian nuclear power.

      Russia has to defend itself from China nearby, as it is still growing. And they need land and resources. NATO is squeezing russia from each side, NATO fighters placed in Estonia, always taunt russian forces. In general West is still very unfriendly toward russia, and thats why you see rennovation of nuclear stock pile.

    Has it occurred to you that perhaps one of the reasons that the West isn't so thrilled with Russia is that they have a man like Vladimir Putin running the show?

      I don't blame Einstein, I bet there was a lot of more or less intelligent nut cases who contacted him with all kinds of "great ideas" and "energy machines" all the time, had he been reacting to it all he would probably have had far less time to work on his own theories.

    Besides, Einstein was a physicist, not an engineer. Perhaps he should have been talking to Norbert Wiener, or Vannevar Bush, if he were interested in applications.

      Only you guys in the US still cling to the idea you can polute as much as you wish without having any consquences in the global climate.

    I guess you guys have to continue be shrill and smug about the subject, so that you don't lose your nerve in the face of evidence that might contradict the new beliefs you've learned to cling to. You guys attach an awful lot of emotionalistic certitude to something that is supposed to be a scientific conclusion, given that science is supposed to be conducted in an environment free from both emotionalism and certitude.

      You complain about Gore being an alarmist while simultaneously griping about air pollution (emissions)? Talk about cognitive dissonance.

    The parent is complaining about Gore being alarmist with regard to global warming, not about pollution in general. Believe it or not, global warming is not the only negative effect of pollution (if it is in fact an effect at all), and one can be in favor of reducing pollution (or of reducing fossil fuel usage for other reasons, e.g. geopolitical/economic) even without being particularly concerned about anthropogenic climate change. (Well, to rephrase that, I would be very concerned about anthropogenic climate change, if someone could actually clearly prove that it is in fact happening. As it stands, there's some evidence for it and some that points to other causes, e.g. solar activity.)

      The issue has become so politicized that it's ridiculous. So let's drop the global warming concern down a notch - can't we just be concerned about air quality?

    Or, for that matter, depending on a politically volatile part of the world for our energy needs? Or have we forgotten about that one already, simply because gas doesn't cost $3.50/gallon yet?

      If you had not seen/followed Firefly before, I'd have to agree with you, even though I really liked Serenity (to be expected, being a fan of the series).

    Actually, I got into the Firefly series (what little there is of it) after seeing Serenity. Excellent, excellent movie.

      The US slapped a tariff on our (Canadian) Softwood lumber exports into your country. Claiming that our Industry is heavily subsided by the government.

    Well, is it? 'Cause if it is, then I think we do have the right to impose tariffs against your artificially cheaper product. You get rid of your subsidies (i.e. let the market decide timber prices instead of the government) and we'll get rid of the tariffs. I'm all for free trade, but it isn't free trade when one side operates on market principles and the other doesn't.
