I too seem to remember hearing about somewhere achieving break even, and I thought it was JET. However, the last time fusion was discussed here I googled for evidence and couldn't find any...
Well, I found something in this paper, but it's just a brief statement without any support.
One would have thought they would have matured by now and start to think about what they leave after they die.
How many billions of dollars has Bill Gates given to charitable causes? Hasn't he said that he intends to give it all away when he dies? What else do you want? His vital organs?
Did anyone look at the pics in the Wired article? It's basically a whole mess of planar-magnetic drivers (e.g. Monsoon, Eminent, Apogee, Magnepan, etc.) mounted on a panel. Is it really that simple?
For example, I was out with a Japanese woman the other night, and she said "aitakatta". Literally translated, this means "wanted to meet". Translated into native English, it means "I really wanted to see you tonight"
Perhaps, though "average" and "anything with four walls and a roof" aren't the same thing. $500K in the NYC suburbs gets you a pretty decent house, though not a McMansion.
Once we get them into space, will they make roaring, whooshing noises and manuever just like they did in atmosphere? 'Cause otherwise, forget about it.
Well, isn't the F-16 also known as the Viper? And the Viper (at least in the new series) doesn't go roaring and whooshing. (Then again, the F-16 can't do 3D maneuvering the way the new Colonial Viper can...)
A Mac is the entire machine. It starts with the case, and moves to the (usually Apple designed) motherboard, the Apple designed Bluetooth, the Apple designe Firewire, the Apple designed WiFi modules, then moves on to the placement of fans, the duct work, the attention to details. And you end up with a machine that performs the same function, but is of a much higher quality; a computer that's as much as computer as it is a piece of furnature in the room, and that's the idea of the Mac.
Lemme guess - you also paint the edges of your LPs in green marker and put magical Mpingo wood discs on the corners of your handmade single-ended triode amplifiers that are connected with six-nines-pure silver cables with insulation around each strand that cost $100/foot, right? It's a damn computer ferchrissake. Get over it already.
4500 acres to make 500 MW? Using a figure of 1000 W per m^2, the peak solar radiation on 4500 acres should be over eighteen billion watts. Gee, three percent efficiency - woo, hoo.
The real reason the the US drives on the right is probably much the same as the reason they spell different. A deliberate attempt to differentiate themselves from an old colonial power. Perfectly reasonable in some ways,
You realize, of course, that most of the world drives on the right side, not "just" the US? All of Europe, Russia, South America... The question really oughta be - why did the UK decide to be different from the rest of us?
Also, I think that the price of any product should reflect externalities, such as the cost in pollution, the future cost of disruption, and the current cost of military intervention in the mideast. However, again there is plenty of disagreement as to how much to charge for these externalities (since by definition externalities exist outside a market transaction).
I have no problem with penalizing people for polluting the environment, but this should be viewed as just that - a penalty imposed to protect the commons, rather than as an economic incentive. And it's quite possible that such penalties, by making the true costs of fossil fuel use apparent, will indeed shift the market towards more rapid adoption of alternative fuels. The difference is subtle, but important - to me, anyway. It is entirely appropriate (IMO) for the government to protect the environment, but not appropriate (again IMO) for it to engage in central planning of the economy.
This is exactly how people should adapt to the increased sunlight hours during the summer - get up earlier and go to the gym, do gardening, whatever, during the copious hours before work if your work hours are static throughout the year.
And what are we going to use to make all that plastic, eh?
Hydrogen doesn't have anything like the energy density of petroleum fuels, so internal combustion engines may not work too well.
I dunno, BMW doesn't seem to think so...

Or maybe morph it into a Morpheus?
What kind of chilling effect is this having?
Go ask Google, Skype, Symantec, Apple, the local Linux guy, all of which benefit immensely from Microsoft not getting it until it's too late.
But doesn't the very existence of such companies constitute a sufficient counter-argument?
One would have thought they would have matured by now and start to think about what they leave after they die.

My conclusion is that there is still a place for human translators.
Maybe Spanish is easier to translate than German?
For example, I was out with a Japanese woman the other night, and she said "aitakatta". Literally translated, this means "wanted to meet". Translated into native English, it means "I really wanted to see you tonight"
Hey, quit bragging!
500K$ seemed like a good average.
Perhaps, though "average" and "anything with four walls and a roof" aren't the same thing. $500K in the NYC suburbs gets you a pretty decent house, though not a McMansion.
I would cut off my hand for the chance!
It's doubtful that they'd take someone with only one hand. Especially someone who cut off his own hand; that's kinda like, nuts, ya know?
Why does it cost you half of everything you own to get a divorce? 'Cause that's what it's worth.
wrong
How eloquent. Who is wrong, and about what?
No, the F-15 is the Fighting Falcon.
Well, actually, the F-15 is the Eagle. I know the F-16 is officially called the Fighting Falcon, but it is also often referred to as the Viper.
Once we get them into space, will they make roaring, whooshing noises and manuever just like they did in atmosphere? 'Cause otherwise, forget about it.

I'd wager maybe 10% of the jobs out there have anything that requires an *absolutely critical* understanding of evolution
Oh, I'd bet it's more like 1%, or even less. But would we want to do without those jobs?
Well, if the gaskets hold up, it may even work better, since it will be water cooled.
And if the gaskets don't hold up, why, then it'll be cooled even better!
And so that we have a base of operations when the time comes to terraform Earth.
It also gives us a planet to practice on, besides our own.

So... the next generation of electronics is going to be made of shit?
Isn't that true of every generation?

Uh, huh. I take it you're a morning person?
...then only criminals will have space weapons!
