- No one is using pay phones for voice calls anymore because they have a personal phone number in their pocket
- Therefore all the payphones which the telcos have access to (and I would assume cost money to maintain) are not bringing in the dollars.
- So the conclusion can be drawn that if some other form of profit can be drawn from these payphones, it would be beneficial to the telcos.
Anyway, with that said I think this is an AWESOME idea. The pay phones have copper going to them that can run DSL, and some type of power source already at the phone.
Its so obvious I cant believe I didnt dream it up!
I hope you will agree that it has not been proven that life can be created out of chemistry. It has not been done.
And as there is no proof, any other theory is wide open be it creationism, or a quantum theory explination of the human mind. Believeing whole-heartedly in an unproven theory is no diferent than believeing in creationism.
Agreed. I was excited about the possibility that this was a truely open PVR. But it looks like all the obvious features are taken out, and its another cable box.
Did anyone else read this and say "duh! oh course".
"Abstraction" does not mean "Perfect Model". If that was what it pretended to be then this article would be a big deal.
I dont think anyone pretents that programming abstractions, or any of the many other models used in technical work, are perfect. A high percentage of the time they are easier and quicker than reinventing the wheel. But when the wheel that comes prepackaged just cant handle the job you need it to do, then you DO reinvent it.
I will certainly agree with you in your second point. That is, no one should be forced to see or read anything they wish not to see or read.
However, on the matter regarding funds from the federal government, I must disagree.
I am personaly of the opinion that the federal government should not be allowed to persuade, using funding (or lack of), anyone on any issue for which it would be unconsitutional to pass a law. And, atleast according to another post some courts do agree with me.
Anyway, Im not going to pretend that this issue is simple and that all the godaweful porn in the world should be avaliable to be view publicly at our libraries. However, I will be very vocal on my personal belief that the federal government should not be able to use funding as a scare tactic. This is, as you mentioned, the real issue.
Kudos on your efforts to raise your kids the way you do.
I am especially happy to hear you're not too happy with the DARE program. Luckily when I went thought it I was already pretty well educated (from the internet, anyway:) about drugs and the like. At least enough to know that some of their talk was BS.
Anyway, if I remember correctly, we were required to have a permission slip signed in order to take DARE or we atleast given the option to opt out of it. Did you consider this at all for your kids? Or were they interested in attendeding (for social reasons of what not)
Maybe you missed this very significant paragraph in the post you replied to:
Would I myself walk into a library, sit down at a computer, and bring up a porn site? Absolutely not. It's rude and inconsiderate to other patrons, and any library ought to have a rule against it. But here's the clincher: It's the libaray's business what rules they decide to make and how they decide to enforce them, not the federal government's.
Sorry!
Anyway.. on the actual issue I think we are in agreement. I like the idea of making unused payphones into WiFi access points.
Anyway.. sorry to flame you for absolutely no reason what so ever!
Scott.
I KNEW it was Ma Bell.
Damn her and her suductive dial done!
I used to do that ALL THE TIME at in gradeschool. It drove people crazy.
Ah.. technology was fun before they locked down all the cool hidden 'features'
Scott.
How in gods name is this insightful?
They just reposted the comments they were replying to. It even says senseless post in the title!
Come on moderators! PAY ATTENTION!
Scott.
I think maybe you missed the point.
As I understand the parent to your reply:

Thanks,
Now the thing BASICALLY runs. But it still crashes occasionally. BUT even when it doesnt crash I cant make the thing GO
Alright.. Im stupid. I tried to install this thing, but it keeps complaining about not having an OGG.DLL. Where can I get it?
Scott.
This is absolutely nothing better than a good shell hack.
I havent seen one for awhile, kudos!
Scott.
Ive had about enough of people in other countries saying the only way to solve their political and legal problems is to see it happen herre first.
If your representitives are that blind and sheepish, VOTE THEM OUT. Its not my responsibility.
Scott.
Blocked at work.. wheee
If the person donating or selling the face concents, and the person recieveing the face concents there are no ethical issues.

I dont believe he is advocating anything.

So maybe Im daft, or not trying hard enough..
But I dont see how that self replicating program
in your link works.
Do you have some time to maybe explain a little bit of it to me?
Scott.
Funny,
I thought it was Dewey Cheatum and Howe.

Just curious,
Scott.
Awesome link.
This is an awesome example of the extreme pressure that some individuals will put on institutions to support censorship.
At the same time, it gives a clear, calm and above all sane response from the librarian. His letter is awesome.
But, I hope you will appreciate the necessary openness and tolerance that a great public library in a democracy must observe.
My thoughts exactly.
Scott.

Good post.

This is the only one that got a smile out of me
Scott.
Maybe its just late afternoon on a friday..
But!! That really got me laughing.
I can just picture the sheep blindly clicking on links.
Scott.
Its about 4pm Central time.
Most of us are using Windows at Work.
Scott.
I personaly have one of these.
And on a small inland michigan lake we have gotten it up to 75 MPH.
Granted at 75 you're pretty much risking your life. But it will cruise at 65MPH on flat water without even making a fuss about it.
Scott.
Or maybe...
This is a message from the future! Be careful what you saw about the newborn Tim Bernard Lee! He will be our new king one day!
