the gyroscopic forces produced by the wheels are an EXTREMELY small part of what actually keeps a bicycle upright. bicycles are actually kept upright by a system of negative feedback in which even the slightest deviation from vertical tends to pull the front wheel sideways in a manner so that it rights itself (due to the angular momentum of the entire bike+rider). this has been explicitly proven by people who built bicycles very strangely so has to produce the opposite behavior of the front wheel, they were almost impossible to ride.

I am going to try to be concise. It will appear that I am leaving many things out, because I am. The UCC is long, like all laws. Feel free to add to this if theres anything you think contradicts it. Please note that I am breaking many heirarchies, do NOT assume that (1) and then (b) means its 1b, it could be 7b, or from a different section. I will keep actually adjacent sections together and nonadjacent seperated by a blank line. The bold italic part near the end is the most important part, so you can skip to it if you just want the answer to your search.

    (1) Rejection of goods must be within a reasonable time after their delivery or tender. It is ineffective unless the buyer seasonably notifies the seller .

    (c) the buyer has no further obligations with regard to goods rightfully rejected.

    (1) Acceptance of goods occurs when the buyer
    (a) after a reasonable opportunity to inspect the goods signifies to the seller that the goods are conforming
or that he will take or retain them in spite of their non-conformity; or
    (b) fails to make an effective rejection (subsection (1) of Section 2-602 ), but such acceptance does not occur until the buyer has had a reasonable opportunity to inspect them;

    (1) The buyer may revoke his acceptance of a lot or commercial unit whose non-conformity substantially impairs its value to him if he has accepted it
    (b) without discovery of such non-conformity if his acceptance was reasonably induced either by the difficulty of discovery before acceptance
    or by the seller's assurances.

    (1) Where the seller fails to make delivery or repudiates or the buyer rightfully rejects or justifiably revokes acceptance then with respect to any goods involved, and with respect to the whole if the breach goes to the whole contract (Section 2-612 ), the buyer may cancel and whether or not he has done so may in addition to recovering so much of the price as has been paid
    (a) "cover" and have damages under the next section as to all the goods affected whether or not they have been identified to the contract

    (1) After a breach within the preceding section the buyer may "cover" by making in good faith and without unreasonable delay any reasonable purchase of or contract to purchase goods in substitution for those due from the seller .
    (2) The buyer may recover from the seller as damages the difference between the cost of cover and the contract price together with any incidental or consequential damages as hereinafter defined (Section 2-715 ), but less expenses saved in consequence of the seller's breach.

I would like to reiterate some of the bold parts, paraphrased. If you dont like it, you can reject it. If you dont reject it but it doesnt conform to your expectations, you can revoke your acceptance. If you do either of those then not only are you entitled to recover whatever of the price you have paid, but you also have the nifty option of buying a replacement and having the original seller reimburse you for the difference in cost. That last part applies less so to games than to office software, but a perfect example would be Tax software. You need it and you need it TODAY, so if the software you get doesnt meet the expectations set forth then you have the option of getting a replacement elsewhere at the seller's expense.

PS: 90% of slashdot readers qualify as a Merchant Buyer with regards to purchasing software, which adds a few more really juicy options that take a lot more reading to get into. I leave that as an excercise for the reader.

  20. Important detail about truth tables on Beyond Binary Computing? · · Score: 3, Interesting

One important thing to remember about truth tables is that the number of operands (the numbers you give to a function to get an output) for a given operator is NOT always the same as the base. For base two you have two operand operations, which we all know as AND OR XOR, but you also have operations that require only one operand, the common NOT (1->0, 0->1) and what I will call EQV (1->1, 0->0). There are also 9 more two operand truth tables that you see in varying degrees of extreme rarity, f/e the following arbitrary truth table that you will never see in practice:
    A B out
    0 0 1
    0 1 1
    1 0 0
    1 1 1

Apply this to base 3 and you find that there are not just 3-operand operations but 1 and 2 as well. For one operand you can have a rotate-down(0>2,1>0,2>1), shift-down (0>0,1>0,2>1), rotate-up (note that in binary one-operand rotation happens to coincide with NOT), shift-up, and various arbitrary tables like the one above. For two operands you have NeitherBoth (00>0,01>2,02>1,10>2,11>1,12>0,20>1,21>0,22>2), and the arithmetic operators, plus a bunch of others with explanations i cant think of right now. For three operands there are thousands of possible truth tables, many with useful explanations, many many more arbitrary ones. Oh, and for both 2 and 3 operands you have multiple partial or complete counterparts to the traditional binary AND OR XOR that apply the same kinds of rules to the operands.

  21. Balanced Ternary, and Ternary circuits on Beyond Binary Computing? · · Score: 5, Interesting

One of the best parts of Ternary (Trinary, base 3) is that you can use BALANCED Ternary, in which the digits are not 0, 1, and 2, but are -1, 0, and 1. This allows you to represent any integer without a sign bit. Letting N represent -1 digit you can represent -17 in balanced ternary as 101N (1*(3^0),0*(3^1),1*(3^2),N*(3^3)).
