With Bluetooth, my phone allows me to transfer my camera pics (and any other bitmap that I've stored on the phone) to another Bluetooth phone.

However, it will not allow me to transfer any of the midi files that I have uploaded to it, or even any audio (conversations / meetings) that I have recorded with the phone directly to another bluetooth phone.

I wonder if this is a deliberate limitation of the phone that has been imposed by my carrier? The phone is a Nokia 6600.

Get a multi-format writer, and experiment! I did. Generally, I use DVD-R and DVD+RW. Those formats seem to be the most readily available. DVD+RW discs burn at 2.4x. Apparently DVD+R media are supposed to be more compatible with stand-alone DVD players than DVD-R, however I have had no problem with DVD-R in stand-alone players.

The writer that I have is a 4x burner, however I have only been able to get my NEC1300A to burn DVD-R at 4x a couple of times (yes, I AM using the latest hacked firmware!). No problem with burning the DVD-RW at 2.4x. I've tried about 3 different makes of media, and the ones that worked were about 50% more expensive than the budget disks that I have been using.

I can't comment on alternative makes of burners (Pioneer, Sony etc)

I can see it now - news reports of people being mugged for their ID cards, and having relevant digits / organs / limbs amputated as part of the crime.

There are people out there that would do that sort of thing without a second thought.

Anyone seen Demolition Man? The character played by Wesley Snipes escapes from the cryo prison by using a pen to extract an eyeball from one of the guards.

  13. Read Kim Stanley Robinson on The Space Elevator · · Score: 2, Informative

There are a series of SF books by Kim Stanley Robinson, titled Red Mars, Green Mars and Blue Mars.

Space elevators are part of the story, and the sabotage of a space elevator on Mars results in catastrophe. I recall that the sabotage involved the cable being detached from the space station end. The space station flew off into space, and the cable fell back to ground, wrapping itself around the planet's equator.
