That's anecdotal!
My anecdote is similar-ish. Except it only took one year of mistakes to teach me not to get a flu shot.
The one year I received a flu shot I had two flus keeping me down for just over a week each. Down hard for a few days each, down medium the rest until the last few days. Sucks.
I may start them up again based on how many comments I can slog through here, but only if they are comments approving of the flu from/. members with 4-digit user ids.
Gee, I get marked a troll by trying to say things like "for the Blackberry to win the iPhone need not lose".... here you go with a serious fishing pole.
Point 1 -- perhaps in your area. I've traveled to enough cities in the US (and even USVI) and I can make calls and retrieve data just fine.
Point 2 -- the apps are expensive?! Here:

Crikey someone has it out for me. My comment is darn benign how did it get to be a troll...
Concentrate more on promoting than on demoting. The real goal here is to find the juicy good stuff and let others read it. Do not promote personal agendas. Do not let your opinions factor in. Try to be impartial about this. Simply disagreeing with a comment is not a valid reason to mark it down. Likewise, agreeing with a comment is not a valid reason to mark it up. The goal here is to share ideas. To sift through the haystack and find needles. And to keep the children who like to spam Slashdot in check.
Yeah, it'd be great if companies and more so, the press, could stop thinking in terms of a __________ killer! Nothing is so wrong with the iPHone that it needs to be "beat" or "killed" or "maimed" or anything else. I'm not pandering or trolling for the "can't we all just get along" people. If your main focus is always the other guy then how can you improve yourself? OK take a measurement now and then but gosh you have to do the work to win.
This much is obvious... but what's not obvious is for RIM or PALM to win, Apple need not lose.
The iTunes LP experience is accomplished with HTML 4.01, CSS and JS. The interface feels very Flash-like, but there is no trace of it. The CSS animations are elaborate and smooth. Font files are referenced with an @font-face declaration in the CSS but there seems to be little to no use. Most text, even long passages of lyrics, is represented visually with a PNG file. I wonder if they originally intended to use font replacement for all text, but changed their mind.
I didn’t find much in the way of DRM on the iTunes LP. Though your iTunes Store Account is recorded inside the.PLIST file, everything worked even when de-authorizing my computer in the middle of play, as well as removing the reference all together.
It's a segue way to deep packet inspection and bandwidth metering/shaping.
You all know how IT Dilberts can get away with pure lack of inspiration or willingness to provide service by using the "it's a security problem" trump card...
Did you all miss that Bejeweled on the iPhone was one of the first "apps" back before the SDK? Yep, it was a full on web app for the iPhone/iPod platform, and, you can still play it in a web browser.
Visit this site in your mobile safari browser (or desktop but it redirects you pretty quickly now) http://www.popcap.com/iphone/
Just because I left words unspoken, for effect, doesn't make the post a "troll" post... hopefully meta-mods will see this as a totally crazy mod. So some mod who is hyper-capitalist modded me a troll, what for?
I am not a troll, I am a 6'2" fit male who knows a few languages and can make his way through a crowd.
But yeah, capitalism has spawned the ability for a very small minority to amass a very enormous amount of wealth. These people are not contributing more to the world, are not necessarily smarter, and it is immoral to think that somehow they are worth 10,000 times more than the average human being. Capitalism has given a majority in America the delusion that they too can win the lotto, they too can be the next 10million dollar a year winner but instead they don't realize that they are stuck as economic vassals.
The pres of my company makes a modest salary by ceo/pres standards. I will work 20 years at a decent salary (top 10%) for my region, save 20% of my salary a year and it will not equal what he makes in one year! There's something woefully wrong with our system.
I agree with @commodore64_love... no need to kill it off completely but we need some serious reform, and, as a society, neigh, as a civilization we need to come to terms with who we are, what humanity is, and where we see ourselves in the world. Will it be some dystopian vision of capitalism writ large, or some blinded by mythologies version of this?, or can we be reasonable?
Did the survey consider that those households with a Mac might "own a PC" but really it's just BootCamp? Wonder what the uptake for BootCamp is among the unwashed.
> For the Round Table Project, Professors Adriana Palacio and Stephen Majercik re-designed the introductory-level computer science course to become an interactive, problem-based learning class. By making use of HP Tablet PCs and Dyknow software, the instructors increased the engagement of students with a wide range of knowledge and skills. The primary goal of Round Table was to facilitate a positive learning experience for students, who have varying degrees of exposure to computer science, in order to encourage prolonged study and interest in computer science.
FWIW -- I can't really get a Dell with the same components as the entry level Mac Pro (which uses the Xeon 3500 series in a single chip configuration) to be 2/3 less.
I can configure this machine to be the same basic (with a fairly superior graphic card I might add): Dell Precision T3500 64bit... but the price is right up there around 3700 bucks which is more than the entry Mac Pro with same processor, etc...
Now we could go around and around on variances or qualities of this Intel processor line or that but just to be fair the components Apple uses, if configured in a Dell seem to make the Dell cost about the same. You just have a choice of going to the i7 line which arguably buys you about identical speed. Right?
Which is why Apple has not implemented a touch screen desktop. They have enlarged and enhanced the use of the trackpad on the entire MacBook line so clever multi-touch gestures can start to become part of everyday computing. I use anything without them and it feels like a lesser experience.
However IMO touch screen does make sense on hand held devices.
Thinking that the case for saving energy costs with CFL/LED is made moot by the offset your incandescent bulbs make in your heating bill is fallacious. You are all on crack if you really believe there is some valued heat quotient affecting your heating bill off a handful of incandescent light bulbs... pass the pipe!
If you use less energy with an LED or CFL things are better. If that money and energy saved amount to the cost of the bulb things are better. You are NOT gaining any appreciable heat generation to affect your heating bill by burning incandescent bulbs. Period.
I live in Maine. We have winter. The dozen and a half incandescent light bulbs will not appreciably affect my heating bills, nor my comfort level w/re to the cold. It's crazy this thread went on so long before some levity was introduced. The only people who use AC in New England tend to be New Englanders who believe 90 degrees and some humidity is hot. It only last for a few days before all is crisp and cool again and why whine about the few days of heat in the summer when you have 6 effective months of winter is beyond me.
I don't think your use of "fanboy" helps anything.
While you are not referring to my post, I read the post to mean something different. I agree with the idea of the core security being a problem due to the single point of control for patches.
> OSX is UNIX, which is a HUGE advantage over Windows, but the closed Apple mono culture prevents it from being used to it's fullest.
I guess you haven't used OS X then? There is nothing baked into OS X which prevents me from doing less than I can imagine. Your so-called "monoculture" is sort of false out of the gate. If you are skilled enough to roll a Linux box then you should be able to install just about anything on OS X as well.
Apple offered to buy Be first but they declined thinking their valuation was higher than Apple was offering. Palm later bought the Be assets for 11million, about 10 times less than Apple's offer. Which is why my very first post in this thread, now marked troll by some troll, said "loser say what"!?
Apple went on to buy NeXt to build OS X from its core rather than BeOS. Much smarter move IMO. NeXt was light years ahead of BeOS in terms of actual implementations and deployments (as in real shops ran real systems on NeXt tech)
What? The phone explodes whenever you do something it doesn't like?! Or just when a call is dropped?

Mmmph-mmmmph-mmmmmmmphhhhh-ppppphhhhhffffffmmmmappppffffff.
Rip .... oh there. I just pulled the tape off.
Capitalism is evil.
I don't want to sound pejorative but ... this is the most outdated line of reasoning in the history of computing.
Not even worth picking apart.

It's 2001, your crappy phone called and wants its MMS back.
There are so many other ways to send photos and video why bother with something ATT will bill you for?
Watch as we witness the slow and long fight for unlimited pipes vs. limited, fee based services.
Not sure if this will help but FWIW:

... and the difference between a 3 digit and a 5 digit is best answered by a sloth.
yeah, i agree in general ... my mistake on the simple interp.
corrected my thinking below somewhere after realizing...
Thanks for the tip @103070 :)
I rail against the use of so-called on my local NPR station ... seems they can't report anything without using the phrase.

Post-presidency Carter is the über-mensch though. He has done more since leaving office than most presidents combined.
