It's exactly this retarded logic that works so well with most Americans. I actually sat in a United Way campaign meeting last month and listened to how wonderful it is that if I just donate a dollar, often an agency can get matching federal funds, sometimes up to 13:1 matching. I was the only one going "wait a second. Those $13 matching dollars are mine!"

I wish I could run my business by taking 40% of people's incomes, wasting 75% of that, and "giving" the rest back to them in crap they don't really need.

I use a Hauppauge WinTV-USB and am pretty happy with it. If it drops frames, I don't notice. It's not like I'm doing video editing with it (that's what my Firewire ports are for). The newer ones do audio over the USB cable so you don't even need to feed a line-in port on your soundcard. Though, again, the audio quality over USB is supposedly worse than the analog line-in port (which you can still use), but I can't tell the difference. What do you want? It's NTSC composite video with crappy analog sound. Watch a DVD if you really want to memorize Natalie Portman's every feature.

I can assure you someone that's been out of work for 9 months appreciated a couple hundred dollars a lot more than my in-laws will appreciate their usual shot-in-the-dark gifts.

Avoid gifts. Let people pick their own. Don't waste the money on a lavish party. Some people will love it but many will hate it. I think $500 is a nice round figure. It's enough to get that new digital camera / flat-screen or fund a weekend getaway (or at least make a huge dent in the cost). I'd also just go with the same bonus for everyone and let people know it's the same. It'll avoid all that petty rumor crap. And if you really want to go back and give more to a star employee, do it privately.

Well, for the last two years I've had to make a trip to the same location. Last year I used Yahoo maps. This year I used Mapquest. Mapquest definately won the shootout. Yahoo's directions took me through all the wonderful backwater scenic areas of podunkville just to chase a diagonal line that some joker labelled as a state road. The federal prison looks lovely late at night, by the way. Mapquest's kept me on the interstate for 20 more miles and I had to curl back slightly to get to the right place. By their estimates, Yahoo should have saved me 5 minutes on a 2 hour trip. Instead it took me 45 minutes longer with Yahoo.

How about our fancy machine room with the nice raised floor, plenty of power, genset, cooling, and all that jazz? It's on the half of the floor we had to sublet to a real company with 100 times our revenue.

Our servers? Piled in a reclaimed conference room with big box fans on the floor blowing into the room. And if you think that's the dumbest thing we could do, guess again. It's not even in the top ten.
