I don't know why people buy something like this as it's clearly not for me.
There, you said it. Different users have different needs.
Personnaly I would never go back to a desktop. It takes too much space, and I love that I can do gaming, and browsing, and anytime I want I just pick up my laptop and bring it with me anywhere in the house.
I could have a gaming desktop AND a cheap laptop, but then I'd have 2 machines to maintain, (on top of the 5 other laptops in my household).
And to be sure I can acces my data on both computers, I'd have to either duplicate it or put it on a network drive or (god forbid) The Cloud(TM), and it would not be seemless.
The fact is I work in IT, been a programmer for 25 years, and I don't know anyone (friends, family or close colleague) who still has a desktop.
Of course I'm not a passionnate gamer, as long as I have more than 30fps on most games I play I'm happy.
Oh, not that shitty spam again? Who are you? You sit at home all day, glued to Slashdot, and as soon as someone mention "adblock" you cut & paste your shit?
And drop the bold on important words. Bold or CAPS on some words instantly rings my "scammer" alarm.
Why not send containers with every spore/fungi/seed/bacteria/virus/extremeophile we can to Mars and see what will survive? I'm sure life would find a way.
Oh, not another "but humans in space are a waste, send robots!"
Robots are cool, and they are useful. But if we sent humans to Mars instead of rovers, they would have done all the exploration and experiments in a matter of days, not months and years.
You guys are really depressing. Why bother to explore, to travel, to even get out of your house? You can visit almost any street of any big cities in the world with Google Street view, you can do a video conference for free with anyone on earth, you can work from home... So why waste fuel by transporting humans?
The real waste is not the money spent on the ISS, it's the trillions of $ spent on the defense budget. Address that problem and you'll have enough money to send robots AND humans in space every day of the year.
The ad blocking software I'd like to see would detect and zap into a heap of ash those unrelated-photo clickbait ads; I'd rather suffer through some honest banner ads anytime.
You mean like those "sponsored content" ad at the end of Slashdot's front page?
Because it's litterally the only 7 passenger vehicle we could buy... that was not a minivan.
You see, fitting our 6 kids in a comfortable yet affordable vehicle was a more important factor than the shitty interface of the HVAC.
I know standards cannot predict the future and that's why we were stuck with those tiny buttons. Maybe my solution is not the best, but I cannot fathom how those shitty interfaces could be approved and put into production.
Secondly, these systems give us navigation, which saves a lot of time and gas and improves safety a lot (since you aren't driving in circles looking for something that's not easily found on a map). Of course, you can add this stuff in with your phone and a mobile mount, but that's clumsy and not as well integrated.
The fact that it's fully integrated with everything else in the car IS the major problem with those gadgets.
What can you do with a 10 years old car where the manufacturer doesn't offer updates anymore for the navigation system? You do like most people who had this problem, you go buy yourself a cheap 100$ GPS and stick it on the dash, ignoring the onboeard navigation. Out of date maps are worse than no map at all.
These things should be modular, like car radios where before. Industry should define a standard for size and connections, and you could choose which radio/navigation/mp3/blutooth module you want to put in there. Then you can upgrade them, replace them and update the software independently, as you wish.
Maybe it would stirr up a little competition and we could have better systems and interfaces (I have the Dodge uconnect 4.3, and boy is this interface fucked up and hard to use. 4 clicks on a touch screen to send heat to the feets instead of the face? Who tought of that????)
But now we have some jurisdictions (EU I think is one) mandating cellular connections in new cars so they can support "emergency features" (presumably stuff so when the car is involved in a serious crash, the car can notify emergency services automatically in case the occupants are pinned down or unconscious and cant make an emergency call themselves)
Again, what's the problem with that? Would you rather just sit there and die because you're unable to reach your phone and you're in the middle of nowhere? Honestly, this is probably a bigger issue here in the US where we have a lot more very rural and remote roads where there might not be any passersby for a while, or worse you go into a ravine or something and no one can see you.
So you don't care being tracked whenever you go just so it could maybe someday save your life?
I'm surprised that when the autonomous car subject pops on Slashdot nobody says anything about motorcycles?
Will they still be legal when all cars are autonomous?
Will they be autonomous? (what's the point in riding an autonomous bike anyway?)
How will I be able to get to a trail and ride it? I'll have to put my bike on a trailer? Dual sports will be banned?
I'm quite depressed by this autonomous car business. I enjoy driving and riding, and I see a boring future where we don't have cars anymore. Just very very small buses for 4 passengers. I don't think I'll travel much, since the driving or riding is the most enjoyable part of the trip.
I just hope that the hard part of autonomous driving (you know, the last 20% or the requirements that takes 80% of the efforts) will be almost unsurmountable, so it will postpone it's arrival by a couple of decades (or until I'm too old to drive).
Because it would take much longer to grab my phone, unlock it and tap it on the terminal than it is to grab my wallet, get my credit card out and tap it on the terminal.
I work in the payment business and we're doing a lot of projects for mobile payments, but frankly I don't see the point?
Anyway I currently have a Moto G so no NFC anyway:-)
20 seconds compared to instantly on my Lenovo Windows 7 laptop (without any resuming problem for the last 3 years, and still using a good old spinning drive) I'd call that an eternity.
I never use hibernate, I just close the lid and toss my laptop in the bag. When I need it, I open the lid and I'm instantly resuming what I was doing. The battery is good for a day or two at sleep, who needs hibernate?
Waiting 20 seconds for a reboot and having to reopen everything every damn time would be very annoying.
I'm sorry, but anyone who wants to see free software flourish should make sure to steer clear from that guy.
Like I said, his ideas and ideals are great, and I'm OK with most of them, but the way he responds to questions make him look like a leader trying to enroll us into his sect.
He has a serious image problem, and sadly it's bad for the free software movement.

LOL, really? You must have a script, as soon as it sees the key word it post you shitty reply.
This is a test: AdBlock
Maybe we should all add AdBlock to our signature, mayber it would crash his script?
Oh, not that shitty spam again? Who are you? You sit at home all day, glued to Slashdot, and as soon as someone mention "adblock" you cut & paste your shit?

Brotli has been designed with the internet in mind, with the simple aim of making web pages load faster.
Intall AdBlock, and it'll be faster.
No need for compression, when the ad server are the ones who slow page loading to a crawl.
Add to that the cheaters that ruin most online games after a couple of months.
Seriously, what's the point of playing a game if you cheat?
Fucking assholes. That's why we can't have nice things.
Why not send containers with every spore/fungi/seed/bacteria/virus/extremeophile we can to Mars and see what will survive? I'm sure life would find a way.
Then send humans to cultivate what took hold.
Oh, not another "but humans in space are a waste, send robots!"

Being hipsters, I'm surprised they didn't pick up their dog's poop before it was cool.

How can we remove those pesky ads?
Is it rear engined and air cooled?
Why'd you buy it then?
Because it's litterally the only 7 passenger vehicle we could buy... that was not a minivan.

Sorry, forgot the /sarcasm tag

Whatever happened to "Live Free or Die"?

N/T
I guess you're not a motorcycle rider.
It depends on what genre of film you want to make.
You could make a fantasy movie that draws on the D&D imaginary world. No dice, no DM, just draw on the vast D&D lore.
Or you could make a dramatic movie, where you see D&D players, and how the game influences their lives.
Do you have to unlock your phone for it to work?
Because it would take much longer to grab my phone, unlock it and tap it on the terminal than it is to grab my wallet, get my credit card out and tap it on the terminal.

Thanks for the tip.
So, how do I accomplish the task of running Photoshop on Linux?
...an algorithm to stop Bennett drivel.
but boy does he sounds like a lunatic.

How can that drivel be modded up?
Who gave mod points to Murdoch?
What we really need is a weekly payment program to pay for those monthly payments.
