  2. Got Movie Tickets on Best Results From Bartering Computer Services? · · Score: 1

A guy across the dorm hall 3 years ago and I have an arrangement, he asks me computer questions and on-site help and he gives me as many free movie tickets (he's a co-manager). He gives me 10 reserve movie tickets (basically movie ticket vouchers) at a time, that's about $80 (less if redeemed for matinee show times) each. The theater he works at is part of a chain, so the reserve tickets work at theaters at school and at home. It's a really good deal considering I've used about $250 in movie tickets through "the hookup". If he's working, I can also go up and talk to him and he escorts me (and friends I bring) past the ticket-taker guy, really smooth.

It's good when you can take a date past the ticket lines, walk up to my friend the manager, say "hey, can we see this movie starting now?" and he nods and we walk past the ticket-taking lines and personally escorted to the theater and ends it with "enjoy the show".

Yeah, once in a while there are some that actually do real work (not just NoS), but there are too many lowered Civics with neon lights that I have to show it takes more than a loud muffler to go fast, and I do show them effectively.

I like to think of cars as paintings, people in your boat take rather poor paintings, add some flourescent paint to "jazz it up". I like to get a really nice painting and leave it untouched because I have faith in the original designers. In fact, I want to take damaged paintings and fix them up and resell them because I believe in rebuilding them.

In your example, you haven't lost money because neither you nor the people that distribute the essay have sold it. You're right, someone did violate your right to guide the distribution of your own work.

In the case with the RIAA, they see mp3 downloading as revenue they would have received if someone didn't provide the free music download.

To apply your example to the RIAA's situation you would have to say that you begin selling the essay, but some people went behind your back and distributed the essay for free. That means there's money that you think should be in your pocket, but isn't. You can either not sue and lose the money, or sue to get the money you would have otherwise received.

These studies have said the same thing for a while that mp3 downloading has not affected or actually helped CD sales. However, the RIAA still sues people to try and halt mp3 downloading using fear of prosecution and saying mp3 downloading is damaging the executive profit margins. Someone's not telling the truth because they can't be right, and multiple sources have gone against the RIAA so far.

My issue with the situation is when the RIAA going to actually perform their own study and see for themselves that downloaders aren't pilfering from their pockets? I want the RIAA to prove to me that mp3 downloading is hurting CD sales.

For example, if I am in trial for murder and I present the judge presiding over my case a new Land Rover and mention that it would be frightfully unfortunate if I did jail time, that judge is going to accuse me of bribery and go nuts. I know I'm not the same entity as the movie industry, but the same principle still applies.

Yeah, the market may be bad today, a year from today or even 5 years from today, but don't jump ship too soon. Assuming you had a BS in CE, a good employer of a non-CE, but computing-type job should see your BS and realize you can do more things than you were taught. I already have an AS in Civil Engineering, that shows I know other forms of engineering and transfers over the core classes so I don't have to overlap my classes. My dad got his BS in EE, but worked with chemicals for 15 years till his company was bought out but the new company went under. He now fixes electronic sensor machines for the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality doing what he is educated for with a generous salary.

I guess the moral of the story is get the computer degree you are trying to get and in the long run it'll be okay.

When I think back to Florida in the 2000 elections, wasn't the problem that voters picked no president (where the people had to determine if a chad was punched out enough to count as a vote) or picked the wrong president (butterfly vote layout)?

Well, these voting machines are the wrong tool to fix this problem. The electronic voting machine like Diebold's are meant to totally erase the paper trail which is very bad thing, IMO. What they should make is basically a ballot booth that prints punchcards. You stand at the machine and it asks you:
Who do you want for president?
    [ ] George W. Bush (R)
    [ ] John Kerry (D)
    ...
    [ ] None
Then the machine punches the ballot for you, so there won't be any confusion as to who you're voting for. You can also run an independant tally in the electronic machine, then check it against the punch cards by feeding them back in to a reader, if everything meets up, then few people can contest the results.

A company has quoted if they could produce it, the supercharger could conservatively raise the car from 174hp to ~260hp (300 lb-ft torque) thanks to a solid engine. The physical supercharger is the same as any others, but the problem is that no one has been able to crack the Hitachi (I think) computer so the programming knows about a supercharger and doesn't compensate for it negatively.
